Right. All those wide-open DMV appointment schedules 5 years ago during the pandemic. How soon we forget & rewrite history.
I did mine like 18 months ago at my renewal. It was more time consuming than usual (maybe like 30 minutes) so I can understand how there might be limited appointments each day.

They've only delayed full implementation like 2 or 3 times over the last 5-6 years. People need to make an effort and not just wait until the last minute.

Not sure about CLEAR but if you have Global Entry it is considered a RealID.

But the weird part is, I don’t have a photo on my Global Entry card.

For whatever it is worth - if you have a few minutes and just keep refreshing the appointment page. You will see appointments pop-up. These are typically for next day appointments as people are canceling. Just need to auto-save your info and have it populate into the appointment form quickly before it is taken by someone else. I was able to get appointments for my wife and I. Just went yesterday and was in and out in 15 minutes.

thanks for the advice, much more helpful than, "you should have done it years ago."

There have been plenty of available appointments over the past 6 years that nj dmv has been doing real id’s anyone waiting until 3 weeks before it is required should have known that it would be impossible to get an appointment before May 7
My wife is traveling next month and started looking about 2 months ago...nothing available day after day. She finally got an expedited passport to make sure that she was ok. Is it really crazy to think that the state might divert some resources to add more appointments over the last few months before this is required, since it was entirely predictable that there would be a late rush?

I got my Real ID in 2022...there have been plenty of appointments over the years. Why do people always wait until the last minute and then complain about it? As long as you have a passport, you are good. To be honest I always travel with my passport domestically anyway since I found I get through security faster and never have any additional security checks.

I'm with ya on the complaining part, but I can understand putting off going to MV dept as long as humanly possible.

If mine hadn't just been done as part of renewal, I'd no doubt be lugging along my awkward passport every trip. Actually had to go check my license just to make sure after reading this, lol

They did but the number of us who waited even overwhelmed the additional staff

The important part is they have your photo. Everything is done via facial recognition

I gave up on trying to get a real ID 4 or 5 years ago. I’ll just use my passport.
This is our approach as well. We decided when we have to renew our licenses that's when we'll get the real ID, until then passport it is. We really don't do that much domestic flying anyway, maybe 2 or 3 times for a wellness check on Mom in Florida.

My experience. I got mine (wife too) back in October and it was no issue other than the hour process.
Do NOT only go by the "renewal" thing because even though that was our situation it made no difference. Everyone regardless was all mixed together, They didn't give a damn about renewal or first timers. That was my only complaint.... oh, other than making me re-do my application because I tried to make an "8" more legible by writing over it and the clerk made me do it all over again..but in front of him while everyone else had to wait. # STUPID!

This isn't a complaint I can support. Just Jersey being Jersey. The MVC was getting better but now they appear to be going backwards again. (16 windows in Flemington with 8 open at 1pm ).

In NJ it’s so easy now. Make an appointment. Takes less than 20 minutes to get the Real ID. Key is knowing the right DMV office to go to. I am not giving up my secret.

Drivers license renewals are every 4 years. I got my Real ID at my renewal back in 2022. Is your license up for renewal this year or did you just renew the regular license the last time? Just trying to get a gauge on how my renewal will be next year.

Everyone says how wealthy NJ is. Shouldn’t the services be better?
There are a lot of appointments available for years.
Public schools and services are pretty good in NJ. You
choose to live in the most liberal state in the country !! Amazing !

I got my Real ID in 2020 or 2021 when my license was expiring, and was able to renew last year through the mail.

Next year. And in Monmouth county there's only one DMV that gets you in and out quick. It's kind of off the beaten track and for some reason not known by the masses. It's closest to me and every time either for inspection or going inside there's hardly anyone in line.

1. Really doubtful at this point.
2. Who wants to bring a passport for domestic
3. You had years and years to do this. Also you can wait until after the deadline to get it unless you're traveling immediately after the deadline. Then use the passport once.
1. Oh, it will probably be implemented, causing a train wreck of biblical proportions at all airports, then the deadline will be extended.
2. Meh.
3. F NJ DMV. As long as I can keep renewing my license online, I'm good.

LOL..when is that last time you called somebody in Trenton about unemployment or any other services? I'm 9 months into a tax payment I MADE in September that was supposed to be resolved in 3 months..now on month #9. Everyone working from home (not a guess, the admission from the reps I'm dealing with).

The MVC is functional because you can go there.

and I bet the airports aren't smart enough to have express lines for those that have em vs. the people who don't backing everything up.

I'm glad I saw this thread because we're flying out of PHL to MIA on the 9th.. JFC. That ought to be a mess.

I bring my passport for every domestic trip. Is it that much a hassle? And it’s a backup when I go to my place in FL in case of emergency.
I mean it’s thinner than your ******* phone and you traveled without that for a long time

That said this is an interesting shitshow that was so important it’s only been delayed 20 years. I haven’t been to NJ DMV in 12 years somehow because they kept recycling my pic and I guess I am still 33.

My license is up this summer so I imagine will finally go back and get this ID but it’s funny how much you have to show and quite sad.

My impression is that I have to have a certified copy of my birth certificate to get a Real ID just as I would need it to get a passport. (My passport expired years ago; we haven't traveled.) Then why not just get a passport? What is the advantage of having Real ID instead? (My apologies if this question has long since been answered; I haven't the patience to go through six pages of thread.)

To me, it’s quite simple to renew an active passport before it expires. Takes a few minutes. I mean it costs more but there isn’t much effort

I can only guess the Real ID benefit is it’s cheaper and fits in your wallet. Seemingly to some, it’s a big effort to carry a passport, yet you should have it on your person any moment outside the US

I was under the impression this was a fairly new thing so shame on me I guess for not knowing it was available years ago. I guess I can renew the passport then probably easier

Is this like knowing the secret parking lots at Rutgers that only a few know about to park at a Rutgers sporting event for free?

You still need a drivers license if you’re going to drive. I think it’s $11 more for the real ID
I have a passport and drivers license. I splurged for the real ID at renewal

That makes me think I can get a passport more quickly than I can get a real ID. Do you think that's right?
Most likely but depends on where you’re going. I made my appointment in Rip Grande so that was their first appointments. Could be different where you’re going
