I assume you are using hyperbole to make a point, and are not expecting to be taken literally.
Because Polanco is far from the worst free agent signing in METS history, let alone all of MLB.
All those years that we were wishing for a strong bullpen. Finally get one (albeit in a losing season) and it's about to be broken up. Dem's da breaks.

Though- Polanco- is a horrendous signing for so many reasons- Our brilliant leader who knows baseball better than anyone else- including HOF level players and coaches...Stearns had a plan- He knew he had Chris Tucker in the bag to be a NYM and he knew that Polanco could run prevent on defense at 1B as well as Pete and have a 25-30 HR season.
He banked on this brilliance- and imagine how bad it would be right now if he did get Tucker...
Well there's Jason Bay on a four year deal, and Ollie Perez on a three year deal. Granted, Ollie was good for the Mets before he signed his big money free agent deal. But after that, his performance fell of a cliff.
Of course there is Bobby Bonilla, whose memory we honor every July 1. And to a lesser extent, Vince Coleman. They were both on longer deals at bigger dollars, relative to their peers. They weren't horrible performance-wise, but from a chemistry standpoint they helped destroy that team.
You could even make the case that relative to expectations, and relative to the market at the time, George Foster and his five year record setting deal was the worst.
By definition, a bad two-year deal is not as bad as a bad multi-year deal. But if you want to talk two years, there's Frankie Montas as @yesrutgers01 mentioned. And who can forget Jed Lowrie?
I admit that come September 2027, I may change my tune if Polanco doesn't turn it around. But as you say, it's only been 100 at bats. Perhaps he will turn it around, if he can get healthy.
No one was worse than Jed Lowrie who got $20 million for 2 years and had no hits for the mets in that span.
With Bonilla- the Met's OF the prior year was McReynolds LF, Colman and Boston in CF and Hubie Brooks in RF
McReynolds not back in 1992. The OF was so bad, Hojo was asked to play CF in 1992.
Looking around the league- I see many lamenting the Met's about Lindor and soto's contracts...And I am talking about our own fans as well. And justifying not signing Alonso.
Makes me wonder what fans of other teams are saying about Tatis, Tucker, Vlad, Naylor and of course- our own Bichette. Even Bellenger across town...

Whoever it is you're referring to, I share their lamentations.
Lindor is halfway through his 10 year Mets contract. For contracts of this length, it is usual for the player's performance to deteriorate on the back end.
Mets still have another 13 years of Soto. How many of those 13 will be at his prime performance level? And who knows how a possible salary cap might affect the calculus.
Given their existing commitments and the underlying uncertainty, I continue to believe that the Mets could not prudently offer Alonso five years.

From what I read - Amick has potential as he has 23hrs in AA ball. Projected to be a corner infielder

Benny's son!! Was hoping Mets drafted him a couple of years ago. Contact hitter who should be able to get on base. Future 2B hopefully.
Power potential for Amick but needs to cut down on chase. Similar profile to Clifford so we'll see there.

Yes- much better and more prudent to give Polanco $20 mil per year...And then with this idiot, do it again and again.
Lindor- I am sure the end of his contract will be a pain in the *** but he has given 4 straight top 10 MVP years and had the first significant injury of his career. But, more prudent to give a crappy SS who is not even the same level of hitter almost $10 mil per year more.
Hey- we owed Nimmo for another bunch of years- let's just trade him for a guy that is costing us significantly more per year but sucks. And just because his contract is shorter- doesnt make it better or more financially responsible.
Alonso- even if his last 2 years of that contract is a guy hitting 240 with 25 HR and 80 rbi- his chase of 400 and maybe 500 HR will be a cash cow for the Met's.
Stearns is a fantasy baseball GM - He really seems to have zero clue about really putting together a "team"
Senga to start tonight. Pintaro and Curry back up, and I suspect both will see action. Perez to IL.
