Ron Rivera had put a 8-9 win threshold before the season and that can’t be reached now. Louisville win (ranked at the time) doesn’t look as good now either.

Big Ten: Minnesota might be the most irrelevant program in college football. Don’t mistake that for being the worst, because during PJ Fleck’s tenure they’ve won six bowl games and have never finished worse than 5-7 back in his first season. But when’s the last time Minnesota did anything, good or bad, that was worthy of the nation’s attention? You probably have to go back to 2019 when the Gophers started 9-0, reached the top-10 and finished 11-2. Since then, Fleck usually gets by beating up on the bottom half of the Big Ten without threatening to raise the ceiling nor getting himself on the hot seat. But with three losses in Minnesota’s last four games, including 38-35 at Northwestern where kicker Brady Denaburg missed a 40-yarder to tie, the fury is starting to boil. It’s still only a local story — again, nobody outside of the Twin Cities pays attention to Minnesota at all — but it’s worth monitoring. Earlier this year, there was talk in the industry that Fleck could be ready for a change of scenery. If he has an opportunity somewhere else, even with a lateral move, this might be the time to get a fresh start.

The Florida versus Florida State game this year will be rather insignificant, which is pretty rare at least historically

My initial thought was we wouldn’t see a lot of turnover because of massive buyouts but PSU and LSU had me wondering but looks like those may have been the exceptions. Still could get domino effects depending on who they hire.

I would take him over Greg in an instant.

Josh Pate says:

“I know where Lane will be in 2026

all I can say is WOW!”

I’m guessing Texas or bama.
DeBoer to PSU rumors were around when JF first got let go and then died down but recently I’m seeing them again. No idea if true or not. Elko was the other one but he extended his deal at A&M.

So if DeBoer leaves then I could see Kiffin at Alabama.

Don’t know about Texas.

I feel like fairly quickly after the season things will start moving, especially for some of these jobs that have been open for awhile.

Have seen Mora and Jeff Monken mentioned for Stanford.

From an Athletic article with regards to Cal:

Some potential names to watch for the job include Oregon defensive coordinator Tosh Lupoi (a Cal alumnus), UConn head coach Jim Mora, San Diego State head coach Sean Lewis and UC Davis head coach Tim Plough.

Lupoi the favorite maybe…time with Saban and Lanning and he’s an alum so it would make sense.

I had thought he'd be back much sooner since winners ( W-L not as a person) are forgiven and losers usually don't receive second chances.

At 69 Art doesn't seem to have much time left in coaching, but if he does well here I/m sure a P-4 OC position will be offered by a team desperate to improve their offense .
Heck, maybe a G-5 HC position might be available ?

>Briles has been hired as the head coach at Eastern New Mexico, sources confirmed to FootballScoop on Sunday night. The 69-year-old has been viewed as untouchable in college football following his firing at Baylor in 2016, but ENMU is now bringing him back in the fold. ENMU athletics director Kevin Fite previously worked with Briles at Houston. <

I wonder if he'll take it, if offered, or wait for a better opportunity.
The new PAC might be a plus instead of Oregon State tryong to get in the Mountain West that lost members to the new PAC
From Football Scoop

Montana State:
Fresh off a quality W in the Brawl of the Wild, Montana State head coach Brent Vigen landed in Portland, Oregon this evening per Ryan Clarke of The Oregonian. Vigen is expected to interview tomorrow for the Oregon State opening.

If I’m Cal or even Stanford I’d like Eck as a potential option. Between what he did at Idaho and now NM, he’s the kind of guy who might be able to accomplish some things at a lower status school.

Also the SDSU DC Rob Aurich who is doing a great job for Sean Lewis came off Jason Eck’s Idaho staff.

Been seeing some stuff about Matt Campbell and Arkansas. If that happened that’s kind of unexpected. I’d suspect him more for a B10 job than an SEC one..like MSU if it opened or even PSU.

He’s a good coach but wonder if he might run into a Bielema leaving Wisconsin for Arkansas type deal where it might not be the best fit.

DeSean Jackson's name coming up in various places, including The Athletic/NYT Until Saturday newsletter.

I listened to a pod with Feldman and his name was brought up but basically it was a very outside chance and unlikely.

From On3

🐗 Arkansas, Oklahoma State pursuing same candidates

North Texas head coach Eric Morris has emerged as one of the hottest Group of Six candidates. At Arkansas, Morris is in the mix along with Alex Golesh, Ryan Silverfield, and Kane Wommack. Athletic director Hunter Yurachek has spoken to more than 20 candidates and worked to keep the search quiet, with clarity expected soon. Oklahoma State is also heavily involved with Morris, who has Big 12 experience from his years as Texas Tech’s offensive coordinator. Collin Klein has also surfaced as a name to watch for the Cowboys, alongside Golesh and Wommack.

Penn State keeping search under wraps

The Nittany Lions’ search remains unclear. James Madison’s Bob Chesney has emerged as a name to watch, and athletic director Pat Kraft interviewed interim coach Terry Smith this week. Brent Key and Clark Lea have also been tied to the job, but there is no clear top target at this stage.

Tosh Lupoi viewed as prime candidate at Cal

Cal is focusing early attention on Tosh Lupoi, the former Golden Bears defensive lineman now in his third season with Oregon. Lupoi has deep West Coast recruiting ties and was a key figure in Alabama’s national recruiting successes. GM Ron Rivera is running Cal’s search, and other names to know include Sean Lewis, Jim Mora, and Ryan Grubb.

This HC is Utah football and will be very hard to find his equal , even if the replacement is in place already

>Whittingham has been transparent about how last year's 5-7 season compelled college football second-longest tenured head coach to come back for another season leading his beloved Utes, while also being honest about how close the 66-year old has been to hanging up his whistle to retirement.

The program named defensive coordinator Morgan Scalley head coach-in-waiting back in July of 2024, a title the veteran play caller had previously had before it was taken away, but as the season's end draws near there are a lot of questions on when Whittingham will make a decision on his future.<

A coach-in-waiting…if agreed upon by all, can be a very smart move that shelters a program from the cluster f*** that is the present day carousel.

I wish our former WBB coach had tried this vs cratering the program into a small pile of ash…

James Franklin was a coach in waiting under Ralph Friedgen,at Maryland.
He didn't wait . * This I knew , didn't need google
These found googling :

Will Muschamp was Mack Brown's Coach in waiting at Texas
He didn't wait.

Joker Phillips was named the "head coach in waiting" under Rich Brooks at Kentucky
, Phillips' tenure as head coach was unsuccessful, resulting in a 13-24 record over three seasons before he was fired.

Dana Holgorsen was hired to be the offensive coordinator for the 2011 season and then take over as head coach from Bill Stewart in 2012. The situation "failed miserably" as the two coaches clashed, leading to an awkward atmosphere and Holgorsen taking over a year earlier than planned amid controversy.

Jimbo Fisher at FSU IN 2007 While Fisher did take over in 2010 and initially had success (including a national championship), the transition was not without drama. Bobby Bowden was essentially forced into retirement after the 2009 and before he was ready, which caused an uncomfortable ending to his iconic career and did not sit well with the legendary coach.

Whittingham hasn't decided , yet, when he will retire and Scalley head coach-in-waiting status might depend on offers to be a HC at another program if he's not named Utah's HC for the 2026 season or is assured by Whittingham that 2026 season will end his career as the Utah HC .

As for CVS or any HC that seems close to retirement, having a coach in waiting could be a good idea.
But the coach needs to be willing to retire within 2 years or expect the coach in waiting to be looking around and leave if offered a HC position at another program .
Whittingham seems like he's not going to hang on to the Utah job more than another year at most .
But I do wonder if he really wants to retire now that his Utes are so well 9-2 (6-2 Big 12) this season after being a disapointing 5-7 (2-7 confrence) in 2024.
He came back because he couldn't stand leaving after a year like that, he might just have enjoyed this one enough to say one more.

Again IF agreed upon…obviously practice is not the same as theory. In this day and age of utter chaos it might be worth it.
