He was very non-committal initially about returning, my guess is, this late in the cycle, is that he left on his own@JL23 -was Gus given a nudge to get out, or did he leave on his own?
| From Football Scoop Vic Hall served as the safety coach for the Rutgers Scarlet Knights during the 2025 season. In December 2025, he left the program to join Virginia Tech as their nickels coach. |

"yet hired him anyway out of professional insecurity." Hindsight is 20/20.Rather than start a new thread for this, I'll post it here and say it sounds like both the AD & HC are trying to find a way to excuse themselves for the way the program was because of their decisions.
>On one side of the table, you had an AD who knew his candidate wasn't ready for that magnitude of a job, yet hired him anyway out of professional insecurity. On the other side of the table, you had a coach who didn't really want to take the job, but took it anyway out of a sense of obligation to other people. <
Usally when you're unsure you are a good fit, you prove to be a bad fit after taking the job."yet hired him anyway out of professional insecurity." Hindsight is 20/20.
Always go with your gut feel and suffer the consequences. For that matter, he could have had a one on one with Scott Frost after the three person interview and leveled with him as to his concerns, and that may have opened Frost up to his own reservations. One time in my career I did not go with my gut, and it did not end well at that stop.
He was let go ( the mutual agreeing to leave reason) after 4 games in which UCLA;s offense wasn't doing very wellWhy would a guy that just took an OC role at UCLA come back to Indiana to be QB coach? Did something happen at UCLA. I don’t follow most of the moves around college except ours.,
Jerry was briefly the talk of CFB after UCLA upset Penn St and dominated Mich St the week after, but then they tailed off to more or less what they were before Foster got let go. Now reunited with Chip Kelly at NW.He was let go ( the mutual agreeing to leave reason) after 4 games in which UCLA;s offense wasn't doing very well
Jerry Neuheisel replaced him running the game day offense as interim HC Tim Skipper tried to turn the Bruins season around

It was a short and insuccessful stint at UCLA under Foster. Was it because of Foster or was he not ready yet? Who knows but can’t hurt to come back to the colleagues you’ve coached with for many years and regroup on a successful staff. Why would a guy that just took an OC role at UCLA come back to Indiana to be QB coach? Ben Albert was DL coach at Rutgers in 2001.Sources tell FootballScoop Bill O'Brien is set to fill an opening on his staff with veteran defensive line coach Ben Albert, who brings coordinator experience in his return to Chestnut Hill. ESPN is reporting the same.
Previous stops for Albert include Temple, where he coached the outside linebackers, as well as Rutgers, Richmond and Delaware. He also spent one season in the NFL as the assistant defensive line coach for the Jaguars from 2010-11.

I would have thought Pete would have been a cinch to land a college DC job .
Guess pro money topped what he could get with the college DC offers he received, if any.

Sean Frazier a name that many Rutgers fans wish was hired instead of Julie
Looks like NIU moving to the Mountain West didn't beat the lure of the pros for Hammocxk
>Northern Illinois has now announced Hammock's resignation and the appointment of Rob Harley as interim head coach. A statement provided by Hammock reads:
"Representing the Cardinal and Black of Northern Illinois University as a player, alumnus, assistant coach, and head coach has been the honor of my life," Hammock said. "To Sean Frazier, my mentor, thank you for the incredible opportunity to lead, guide, and mentor the young men in this program over the past seven years. I hope I have left a lasting impact on our players the way Coach Novak left one on me.<

I wonder if the Seahawk move will affect this move
>The latest? Sources tell FootballScoop that head coach Thomas Hammock is targeting Matt White to become the Huskies' next offensive line coach.<

Looks like Cincinnati picked NIU's defense clean with 4 of their 5 top tacklers on defense. With NIU's HC leaving, wonder if they'll have any potential portal guys to look at when their window opens.
I found this that might mean he wasn't just related, he was him !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Ben Albert was DL coach at Rutgers in 2001.
He is not related to Fat Albert.
You have your schools messed up, Whittingham is the head coach of Michigan not State PennI wondered why he stepped down then jumped to Penn State.
When he took the Penn State job in my opinion it was an underhanded move, now I see he did what he had to do after seeing Utah didn't really want him more than they wanted the HC in waiting .
So he said see ya , you got him now.
This type of treatment is a good reason to leave and not look back :
> Instead, Utah countered on Dec. 6 with what was effectively a demotion. Whittingham's salary would grow from $7.4 million to $8 million, but he would effectively become a HCINO: head coach in name only. Morgan Scalley "would have 'full and final' oversight in decision-making in areas of football recruiting/player personnel staffing and the general manager position and have “complete decision-making authority” over any football recruiting, roster and staffing matters impacting the program beyond 2026," according to documents obtained by Yahoo. Utah's defensive coordinator had been appointed head coach-in-waiting two seasons prior, and such arrangements typically come with an unwritten expiration date. <
