Nobody with a clue and truly gets Pope would. Dude lacks serious leadership qualities.
I want to believe him, I just don't. I'm going to continue to ride this 3rd year out, but I know that Pope needs to start being more aware of his flaws than he currently is, because if he doesn't and he does end up getting canned, it's going to destroy him.

Man, that’s the odd thing with him. He’s SUPER hard-headed and unwilling to see or acknowledge his shortcomings. Just like the “my first two years were better than Cals last five” crap. True or not, it’s a really weak-minded narrative to try to push.

My take is he’s got zero confidence in his own ability. The result is posturing. It’s a recurring trait in guys like that.

Some of you are just miserable people.
Rather than make a statement that does nothing to prove me wrong, please feel free to ad context as to what you think are his redeeming qualities as a leader of elite college athletes is. That actually takes a little bit of a thought. I could just reply “some of you are weak snowflakes”, but that’s kind of shallow, huh?

When he says vanilla offense he means they just played free flowing. Not many sets. Not many actions to get certain guys looks. Just about every coach in America treats exhibitions the same way. He’s not trying to hide anything. It’s basketball. Everyone runs the same stuff essentially now anyways. But in a real game we are running stuff for Milan more and Moreno and Ousmane to get them looks and to their spots. The times we did slow down and run a set or something particular we got great looks.

We needed to attack the basket aggressively, but we didn't. Way too soft in that department. Not even sure if we even dunked the ball in the first half, despite all that size. So many missed baskets due to lack of aggressiveness to the basket. Gotta finish much more strongly, but that seems to reflect Pope's softness in personality. No bite or edge. Too nice. Slightly better in the second half. Didn't see any alley oops by us, which to me indicates lack of confidence in execution. And no one really wants to get to the offensive boards, the guys are too busy looking for their 3 point shot. Fast break? No one wanted to attack the basket on those for sure.

Aka, we looked like crap again and this is my cover.

That's about as weak of a response as when he said last year's offense failed because we planned it around a left handed PG and then he got injured and we couldn't adjust.

Even if he is being truthful about only running a few sets, the real concerning part is both of our starting guards looked terrible.
Wilkins looked to be impersonating Jasper Johnson and Zoom turned the ball over too often and missed simple layups.
I don't care what you're running, those two guards need to be much better if this team is going to do anything at all.

So if Wilkins scores say 20+ and plays well next Friday what version will you say he is? And if zoom hits shots he normally does next Friday what will you say then? It doesn’t matter because it’s exhibition or they are inconsistent?

I'll say that their performance in the first exhibition was just an anomaly.
What I said was true, both players played poorly. Wilkins was playing his own game out there, but we have had guys do this the last 2 seasons and Pope did a very good job using film to fix those issues, so I expect both players to play better and really, it wouldn't take much for them to fix these issues.

Agreed. I think it was obvious he just let the guys play loosely with just a few general actions and principles. It’s the easiest way to see deficiencies in people’s games. It’s not controlled so you see where they thrive and where they need work. It’s what you use exhibitions for.

Goal was defensive work. Makes more sense why the offense had little to no flow.

We will see how well this holds up.
I am not buying that. Defense was good yes, but these guys have played college ball for years. This isn’t an all freshman team.

He looks like someone killed his puppy during games now. He has no confidence in his ability imho. I think he knows he’s in over his head now. Look at this video lol.
