New Tennis Facility..

I’d rather our athletic department pour money into one of the big 3 sports facility upgrades. Anything outside of the big 3 is irrelevant in my opinion.

More likely to with the school’s first natty in tennis than the big 3 unless you’re counting women’s basketball.

Seems like a waste of money on a non revenue sport.

Could’ve used this money on a Hump reno or an indoor facility for football.

We either have a true sports program or we dont. If we are going to compete in the SEC then we need the facilities. There just arent many other facilities that need major upgrades so spending 8 million on a sport we are a top 10 program in is well worth it.

With all do respect to the sport of Tennis, nobody would give a 17. That goes for track and field, softball, water polo, disc golf and any other after school activity. There are 3 sports that matter. Pour money into them.

The same thing could have been said about women’s basketball just a few short years ago. This is an appropriate upgrade in facilities for an elite program. Cohen demands excellence & MSU rewards it when it happens. Good job John Cohen. Hail State.

My understanding is that MSU is one of the few SEC schools without an indoor facility and it would affect recruiting even more sooner or later if it hasn’t already.

That $8 million investment is a statement to the other non-revenue sports that the athletics department and the university will support you.

It’s a good idea, in other words.

I agree. I just think we need to catch up in major sports before we pour money into minor sports. Without looking, I would be willing to bet we are the only school in the SEC without a true indoor practice facility for football.

We could pour a ton of money into football and our fans would still say “doesn’t matter, we’ll still never catch Bama”. We are excellent at finding something to complain about. This is very clearly a good thing.

Revenue sport or not, national championships matter and tennis is a rare sport where we have a realistic chance of winning one. Florida has 41 team national championships, only 6 of those are in Big 3 sports. Really and truly they should have more than that in the Big 3, but all you hear anyone talk about is how many national championships they’ve won overall and how great their athletic program is.

$8 million is not that much money in today’s environment. Ole Miss built their ITF two years ago for $11 million. It’s a great thing for our athletic program and a needed upgrade for one of our better programs to stay in contention for championships.

Why can't we do both? It's not a zero sum game. Every dollar spent on football, basketball and baseball is probably 100:1 or 75:1 anyway as it is. Our student athletes in all sports deserve the best we can give them.

I believe there is a ratio related to title IX...

Thoughts?

That relates to spending on facilities used by male and female teams, so we can’t pour money into DWS and DNF unless we spend X amount on a venue that houses a female sports team.

Also, we almost had to move the tennis super regional we hosted this year to Tuscaloosa due to inclement weather. We need this as a commitment to our tennis program and a way to retain our coach, Matt Roberts, who is one of the best we have on campus regardless of sport.

For those that remember, IB was out using a blower to dry off the tennis courts a few months ago. He's done with that now.

Good grief....it’s an $8 million facility. Chump change. What are you suggesting we do for football, basketball, or baseball with that money that hasn’t already been done or isn’t already planned?

Exactly. And it serves another huge benefit besides that by letting us finally tear down McCarthy Gym and put something more functional in that spot, which is damn near the dead center of campus and is a major eyesore and waste of space.

I want MSU to win every single game, match or event in every single sport. If this helps an already nationally competitive tennis program elevate themselves even more, than its good news.

Also, this will help the tennis teams win more than a club seating area will help the basketball teams. Both are available as TTF campaigns on the BDC page currently.

Which is ridiculous. What if the money that's "poured into a sport" is contributions from fans?

Anybody ever been to a tennis match? Do the hotel rates triple on tennis match weekends?

Well, an IPF needed to be done a decade ago but Mullen apparently didn't want one. The hump needs major renovations. Davis Wade needs major renovations on the West Side and the East side, along with doing something to the SEZ. All of this may be planned for the very near future, but it hasn't happened yet. Hopefully it will happen soon.

The fact is 99% of our fan base couldn’t name you one tennis player without googling it. Nobody is driving multiple hours to come sit and watch a tennis match. Excuse me for wanting our athletic department to invest in sports that actually matter in terms of branding, revenue, fan support. That 8 million dollars could have gone to a new indoor football practice facility. The palmeiro center is embarrassing.

2023? We just spent $70 million on a damn college baseball stadium. We are already building whatever we want.

Absolutely. We'll actually get closer to $25 mil per year extra and that's on top of the athletic department having $100 mil in revenues and $86 mil in expenses.

We can build whatever we want. The days of telling people, "well do you give money?" are over

We might as well find niche sports to excel in. A football or men's basketball championship is about as unlikely as anything else in this world.
