Here is what I think is happening.
There are two types of crowd at the game: Under 25 and over 50.
Under 25 want real loud brainless music.
Over 50 want soft Sinatra and Bennett that is easy on the ears.
Not sure how there can be a middle ground here.
But remember the old people pay the bills.

I go to football games to watch RU play, to hear the band, see the cheerleaders lead cheers and to actually scream and root for our Scarlet Knights. I love it when the fans get so loud on third down that the other team can't even call audibles. If I want to hear loud piped in music I'll go to a club.

You're exaggerating both sides, there certainly is a middle ground because I don't remember this ever being an issue until they recently turned it up to 11. Up to around 2013, the student section was still packed and the volume wasn't this loud.

47 here (So count me as 50)

I want Rock music and I want it loud. If you watch the student section for any length of time it's what they consistently respond to as well. All other genres are hit or miss but the students repeatedly respond positively to Rock type anthems. The rest of the stadium responds positively to Rock anthems without fail.

I DO NOT want loud anything (besides the band) between EVERY. SINGLE. PLAY. That is the issue and it is easily fixed. No middle ground necessary.

And it is VERY important to understand that YES, the old people pay the bills.

What's Big Birtha? When they first started mic'ing the band maybe about 5 years ago I did find it cheesy and embarrassing that they weren't loud enough on their own, but it did grow on me because at least I was able to hear them and it was still better than the artificial music. Hopefully someday they are big enough they won't need a microphone.
But it’s probably cheaper to have loud, piped in music than to supply and outfit a larger band.

Last time the high school championship games were at Rutgers in 2019, they started blasting music between every play during the first quarter of the eight games over the two days. NJSIAA immediately told them to zip it with the between plays stuff and it made the rest of the weekend tolerable.

Part of the problem has got to be the guys whose job it is. When the NJSIAA told them to stop, they were probably disappointed. It’s their job, so they are probably so into it that they think everyone in the stadium is as well. They are probably the last to realize that thousands of people find it annoying.

This is my biggest complaint also. We do not need to be "entertained" every second of every game. How come at 90% of concerts, the audience "knows" the appropriate times to stand and when to stay seated and to which songs??

Having been to so many sporting events for so many years and enjoying most of them, it really hurts that these "newer" type marketing geniuses had come to the conclusion that the music should be so loud you can't even talk to the person next to you..........

Best of Luck,
Groz
In years past ( cough cough coaches past) we needed the music to entertain us as the product was awful. Now….as was said, let the game be the primary entertainment.

I am over 50 and I don’t resemble that remark. Plenty fine with AC/DC and the band actually being able to play

For those looking to complain call:

Phone Number:
732-445-6200

I called the other day to complain about how loud the music is and that it is between every play to where you can't talk to the person next to you. They don't let the game breath

I said I'm going to a football game and not a concert. The girl that answered said they have been getting many complaint and they are all being forwarded and appreciated.

I then asked her if she goes to the games and what she thought about the loudness and constant noise as an employee. She said she stopped going because its too loud.

This simply can't be true. Some perma-contrarian, d-bag troll ITT has told everyone complaining to simply get over it because everyone else in the stadium LOVES craparific dance music mashups played at top volume between every play. They LOVE it.

Be honest. The woman who answered put you on hold for 20 minutes of blasting techno and you would have hung up after 5 but you were too busy fist pumping around the room to care.

😝

Pre game the average sound level hovered at 97dB for minutes at a time. The highest level was 102.7dB. These levels were measured with several iphone apps, that while somewhat limited by the quality of the microphone in the phone, among other things, are pretty accurate. They track well with the sound meters in the digital audio workstation I use. (Logic Pro). I sit in section 125. This isuue is not an "old man thing." The PA really is measurably a little too loud and should be turned down a bit.
Stadium workers could definitely submit an OSHA complaint on that

As an “old man” who hates the music they play, I gotta say that I barely noticed it….at all. And also I don’t remember the PA announcer at all (let alone being too loud).

perhaps - just guessing here - maybe the sound levels are inconsistent through out the stadium - loud in some areas and not nearly as so in others?

lastly I’ll say, as an “old man” while I hate the music what do you expect them to play - doobie brothers and Molly hatchet? The music is for the kids, they like it. The kids provide the atmosphere (not us “old people”) and if it gets the students pumped I’ll all for it.

but then again, perhaps easy for me to say since, again, I could barely hear it (we were in 105 I believe for reference)
dude please get your hearing checked. There is nowhere in that stadium except maybe in the restroom where that music wasn't ear splitting

The music is staying, get over it, the kids love it, the games are for the kids and the players.

Again, let's move on to the next complaint, lord knows the posters on this board will find something to ***** about, if it is not the noise, it is the parking, the bathrooms, the concessions, the security, the traffic patterns, students not showing up, fans not showing up, standing up on third down, not standing up on third down, foul language by people in their section, what am I missing, fans arriving late, fans leaving early, etc., etc. You know what the AD does with your incessant complaining emails, sends you a form email back if you are lucky, and then deletes, deletes, deletes.
Who said the music should be stopped. Another straw man argument. It's the extreme volume at issue.

Interesting. Received a call from my contact within the athletics department. He said they have been getting plenty of complaints the entire week. The athletic staff was instructed to forward the complaints to Schiano's personal assistant.

And the old people die, and the younger generation (students alumni) need to recollect on how they enjoyed their experience so they can pay the bills.

Be careful with that logic..you were young once too.

dumb comment. It can be loud without being unhealthy

Says the old dude with Jerry Van Dyke as his avatar. Get the kids hyped, pack the student section. Let's be real, winning breeds season ticket sales. If Rutgers is ranked in the top 10, you're coming, regardless of the volume of the speakers.

This is THE most old man thread I've seen. Next week: Where's the Grape Nuts at the concession stands for Noon games?

Rutgers stadium is not close to loud as college stadiums go.
That's akin to saying that traffic on the Parkway isn't as bad as that on the 405 in CA or the Beltway around D.C., so we shouldn't address the local traffic concerns. There are stadiums for which the volume is much lower than ours, and other than to counter your point it is irrelevant to what we should do with our gameday experience. Every stadium and fan base has its own personality and traditions, and the locals are the ones who set the tone.

Big difference with Penn State/ Florida having 100k fans screaming with bands playing (going by on tv last Saturday) than 33k fans being muzzled and possibly go deaf with 100+ Decibel PA music between every play.

dude, my hearing is just fine. In fact, I was able to conduct conversations throughout the game without issue. logic would suggest that that would mean I am not hard of hearing.

to the contrary, I would suggest that those unable to conduct a conversation (as many have in this thread) may be the ones that are hard of hearing.

my hearing is fine.

I didnt have an issue with the volume of the crap music. perhaps it was just as loud by me. but perhaps I just didnt notice as I was having a good time with my friends and paid it no mind. whatever.

obviously a lot of people had an issue with it so it seems like something RU needs to look into.

Schiano’s personal assistant? Are you kidding me!?! There’s no way Greg is telling these bozo’s to blast music between every play.

I do not think that Schiano is telling "these bozo's" to blast music in between plays. But like any good manager/leader he wants to know what issues are being discussed. All complaints regarding this matter have been instructed to be forwarded to his assistant. Much more easily tabulated when all complaints are received at one location.

This begs the question, who is actually behind the decision on sound system volume? Could it be that this is being controlled by a low level employee who lacks training and/or common sense and no one has bothered to supervise?

Probably not because there would’ve been another low level employee if this was the case.

You'd be surprised sometimes how incompetence can be overlooked in large complex organizations especially when it comes to tasks that are considered non-core.

I wonder if it’s much louder depending on what sect you are in. I’m in 128 and I’m not bothered by the volume.
