You are supposed to upgrade your roster when you are Kentucky and spending this kinda money. Going into last season our guard roster was Lowe, Aberdeen, Oweh, Chandler, Johnson and Kam. Look at this year, I would kill to have last years guards healthy compared to what they have put together. We are cooked. This is a 7th to 10th place SEC team unless Milan can walk on water.
Yeah, it is going to take a lot of lipstick to make this pig a beauty contestant!!

Dan Hurley was in his 13th season as Head Coach and 5th as Head Coach at UConn before he made a S16 EVER. Pope was in his 10th season as HC and 1st season at UK when he made the S16.
The reason for the comparison is simple. I am not saying Pope will start winning titles. I am saying that you and the rest of the goal post movers around here would have fired Hurley if he had the exact same results here that he had in his first four years at UConn. 4 years at UK as HC without a S16? You're being hypocritical if you say otherwise
So because they both failed to win before getting to high level programs he will have a similar career? That just makes no sense. You know how many coaches don't win big and then still don't win big even at a higher level? Like 99% of them. This idea that Hurley pulled a rabbit out of a hat, so Pope must also be able to, is just nonsense.

Okay, so you're saying none of these guys are going to improve? Please say yes (you just did actually).

You guys are insufferable. All I can do is laugh.
You're living in your own fabricated world of denial, and you admitted it. You said you don't think Pope is going to get it done, but you're going to soldier on and defend him anyway until after the season. This kind of self flagellation is virtue signaling and puts old world Catholic bishops to shame.

Facts get in the way of their desperate need to dunk on Pope.
These are obviously people that are miserable and feel better when they create things to complain about, or play the victim.
You self-important, pompous ***. You think you know people you've never met? What a joke of a human being.

You'll just disappear for a while.

Very rarely does a player not improve. Justin Edwards and BJ Boston are the only two that come to mind.

I thought this waa a common sense thing, guess I was mistaken.
Our competition is going to improve too...significantly. You really believe our guys will improve enough to overcome the competition level in the SEC? Well why not? After all, we've got the super-coach...oh wait. Never mind.

Nobody can improve from exhibition game 1 I was told by some.

Why is that hard for you to understand? No, I don't tjink Pope can do this at the level we want, but I hope he does, so I'm going to support him and hope he turns out to ge great. Do you need further explanation? This shouldn't be hard to understand.

Good:
  • milan is very good, understands the game very well, in full control of what he wants to do. 7 rebounds....if he can do that he is 1st or 2nd team all SEC player
  • hawthrone need more minutes. only one with any versatility to his game. can make a three, can go in side. got a few deflections on defense. impacted and disrupted the game.
  • mason williams, our best guard all night 10 points on 4-5 shoot, 3 assists, 1 turnover and 3 steals.

Fine:
  • ndiaye - started out with a bang but then fizzled out the final 25 minutes of the game
  • mcbride - the complete opposite of ndiaye, did almost nothing all game long then in the final 5 minutes hits 2 threes
  • frank - hustled, walled up the inside, set some good screens
Bad:
  • wilkins - finished the game 4-12, 2-8 but it was worse until the final minutes when he made a few shots. his shot selection was mostly bad. missed an open layup to start the game with a cute finger roll and it was down hill from there.
  • diallo - didnt score in the 2nd half and i dont think he even took a shot. a starting PG that just disappears. gets cut off on drives in the lane too easy and has no where to go. struggled to finish.
  • Moreno - billed as a top big man in the country yet he is mostly the same player as last year. struggled and didnt look comfortable in the post, 4 turnovers. did great on the glass but i would expect that in a game like this with this level of competition

offense was supposed to be the easy part for this team and for most of the game it looked anything but. i do not buy the pope's excuse about focusing on defense. missed layups, missed FTs, silly turnovers....if scoring is your calling card, if its your DNA then it should have looked smoother in moments last night and it didnt. at no point did diallo and wilkins look like a guard combo for a top 20 team. at no point did moreno look like a top big man in the country.

i fear our team is worse than last years. just a bunch of guys (minus milan) who are 7-8 point a game players

We are going to be worse than last year. 3 of the four starters are listed in the bad column and the entire group of people playing the four spot were just fine. Last year Milan was the 3rd best option on his Iowa State team so imagine the defenses he will face here when he is top of the scouting report for these teams.

The same number of Elite Eights Dan Hurley had through two years at UConn. Now a question for you....In Hurleys entire career, how many S16s did he have through two years at UConn??? You firing him too? Now move those goalposts
Please lets not compare Pope to Dan Hurley in any way other than height.

He’s right. Hurley is a walking temper tantrum and one if the weirdest dudes out there. You guys want Pope gone after two years because he's weird and doesn't appear to have the chops for this. Go look at Hurley's first two years at UConn.

What is this weird obsession that Pope is destined to win at the level Hurley is? There is absolutely zero evidence that is going to happen. Saying "well it happened to Hurley" is just silly.

Go look at John Pelphreys first two years at Arkansas…

This goes both ways.

That's not what we're saying.

Dan Hurley wasn’t Dan Hurley his 2nd year at UConn either, in fact, he was a joke with a temper. At that point in his career, he had accomplished nothing, but UConn stuck it out, they didn't give up on him after 2 years.

We're not saying Pope is the next Hurley, but universities dont typically fire coaches after two years, especially given what Pope did year 1.

Of course it goes both ways. There are a ton of examples for both sides, that's why it's ridiculous to just give up on a guy after 1 mediocre season and that's what this is. None of us can tell the future. Pope at least has a very good offensive mind.

The signs aren’t good. It’s not just the W-L. We are a joke in HS recruiting and portal agents are using us.

There aren't many Hurleys, 99% actually don't fit your narrative. It's like saying Look at all the people who stopped playing the lottery, and the one guy who didn't won last week.

You still don't get it. Cowboy was telling you we would have fired Hurley before he ever got rolling. That's a very true statement and is all I'm talking about here.
We have a large contingent of fans demanding Pope be fired and you know what, we really don't know how good Pope is, he's played the two toughest schedules in UK history and both teams were riddled with injuries, so you, me and Dupree have no clue what Mark Pope is capable of, we're just assuming he's not the right guy.

I completely understand what he is saying. You just don't seem to understand that Hurleys are a 1% chance of happening, Pope isn't the next Hurley dude.

For the 3rd time, I fully understand that Pope will most likely never accomplish anthing close to what Hurley has accomplished. Sheesh.

Then why do you keep agreeing with this comparison that he could be Hurley and the anti-Pope crowd is just being impatient?

What does the Hurley comparison have to do with Pope if you are not inferring that he could have a similar rise?

The point is you don't hire a mid level guy for this job and hope he can become a good coach. You let the guy fail somewhere else. When you are hiring for the best program you get a top tier coach.

You don't get it. You don't hire the early Dan Hurley. You hire the experienced Dan Hurley. Who cares how he coached when he was 30 years old. Same with Coach Cal or Pitino. You don't give someone a step up in jobs like this until he earns it on the court and Pope clearly never earned this job.
