Thats kind of where I am at as well. I think its pretty well known that I liked Franklin, his warts and all. But because of some of his actions and inactions and Pat Kraft and some very entitled PSU fans the situation became beyond Toxic and he had to go. Most of my frustration was how it played out and the coaching "search" (throwing darts at a coaches pictures is not a valid plan).
But while we are not under the same restrictions that Franklin had to deal with when he walked through the door Matt does have a similar issue with lack of talent. Now some of that is on he and his staff for some questionable talent evaluation but he as also dealt a pretty crappy hand.
The true evaluation will happen in this off season and his portal calls. If he (Campbell) has a similar result next year to this and massive injuries and a lack of talent then he may not get another year to try and rebuild through recruiting.
Kraft is going to have to come up with the NIL money he said we have in his self leaked locker room frat boy rant.
Obviously I like Franklin a great deal. As a fan of more than 60 years, I appreciate everything he did to improve PSU on the field and updating the football operation.
That being said, no matter who was at fault (and I give Kraft 65%) James needed to depart.
I abhor the slurs that he was subjected to and the fact that his family was targeted at Beaver as well is a stain on what I once thought was the most sportsmanlike and best fanbase in the universe.
I'm glad he has a fresh start, doing what he loves to do.
That being said, the timing, the disrespect Kraft gave to the roster and the recruiting class and the stupidity he lived for 54 days (at what point did it take him to realize he wasn't getting someone like Marcus Freeman0:
Finally choosing Sitake (what a great fit) only confirms his incredible lack of leadership skills;
The "loyal" fanbase spent the entire off season trashing Franklin and insisting that because Matt Campbell isn't James Franklin, our destiny was paved with playoff gold.
Now reality has finally arrived.
Simply put, Pat Kraft is responsible for turning a coaching change into a rebuild from foundation up.
Now if you've got the hunger for a 4 or 5 year program rebuild on a solid foundation, Matt Campbell is probably as good as there is out there. I suspect even those who gushed over his shoelaces, his shared office space, his cool cap and to say nothing of his legendary (according to BWICAC) ability to coach em up.....will be frustrated by then.
