The craziest thing about the mess in TX is going to be the electric bills some people get. Because of electricity deregulation you can get your electricity from one of 50+ retail electric providers in most of the state. To be more competitive, some plans are variable and you pay the wholesale rate per KWH at the live price. Which is cool until demand spikes and production drops by 30%. Now your electricity cost goes up 300x.

I had a neighbor bragging last summer that he was paying $.03/KWH. Well early am Monday that wholesale rate got up to $9.00/kwh and his power company deducted $170 from his bank account for the electricity for the day. He cut his main breaker off and said he knows of another guy that got hit for $500 for the day because the idiot was mining for crypto.
Most people are getting 30 minutes on/30 minutes off. But others I have talked to have not had power for 18+ hours. Some elderly folks will die because of this mess.
It's not just wind that is failing, if it was it be a whole lot better. Natural gas fired plants are going offline too. Natural gas is being diverted to homes for heating and there is not enough capacity to run some of the power plants.
Coal plants are tripping because they are old as 17 and the equipment to run the plant is failing. Even some nuclear in TX is tripping offline because it was built to run in high temps not single digit cold temps.

This happened in 2013 too. There are all kinds of issues at play, but the biggest thing is growth. Texas has grown by nearly 50% in 20 years. Infrastructure problems are everywhere. Wait until the next drought hits. Fools are going to be filtering pool water to take showers.
We got sick of it and moved a few months ago. Our kids elementary school went from 500 students to 700 in 2 years and our neighborhood got rezoned to a new school that was built this past year. I have a friend who had twins that are now in 6th grade. They went to 3 different elementary schools in K-5 because of rezoning due to growth. In 2000 our district had 1 high school. By next year it will have 12. All of them Texas 5a or about as big as Tupelo High School... That's just in Dallas, Austin is growing even faster percentage wise and after coronavirus, Austin is going to get horrible.
