Vanderbilt is ELITE!!! Great handle, great passer, unreal athlete, defensive stopper, shot blocker, high motor.
Sounds like he has a little Terrence Jones in him.

Knox is not out of the picture. He is a wing forward that can score. he can shoot outside or create his own shot. No one on this board knows what Knox is going to do. Many think they do. Knox is very very interested in UK.. Vanderbilt will not sway him.
That doesn't mean anything. I believe Fox had a game last year where he hit 10 3s.
Are you saying that Cal is trying to go big as a intended scheme or that Cal can't pass up a certain type of player when there may be a better team fit by recruiting down a tad . You may be saying neitherNo, obviously not.
But the real question is, is Cal a basketball equivalent of Les Miles, or someone like that (even Nick Saban before he hired Kiffin)? A guy fighting the dominant trends, in other words (losing that fight in Miles' case, winning, for the most part, in Saban's) ? It's just that I see a UK roster for next year where there will be 7 guys who would play the 4 or 5 at 90% (at least) of D1 schools. And yes, that includes Washington and Vanderbilt, both of whom I like a lot, but more as slightly undersized (though in this era, not really), skilled 4's than oversized 3's. And this clearly isn't the first time Cal's gone jumbo. He's continually been stockpiling size while missing on true wing players.
And I should probably add that I think basketball math can be very different than real math, because of the team nature of the game. There can be times when 2+2=5. There can be times when 2+2= 3. Are both John Wall and De'Aaron Fox spectacular talents? Clearly. Would I want them playing together? Ehh...Clearly a case where 2+2 would likely equal 3.
Just read interview with Vanderbilt, said he's going to help recruit Bamba, Diallo and Young. No mention of Knox
Actually, it doesn't. Who in the hell is Rick Richards?Rick Richards ringing any bells for ya? He's a pretty good shot blocker actually. We have that skill set locked up already. Need to go get some shooters/scorers to finish this class. Not many shooters out there except Young but I'm actually hoping for a grad transfer for two at guard for next year. I think it takes a mixture of experience levels to cut down the nets. We've been close with just freshman but we havent done it yet. I think you need older PROVEN players to play alongside the freshman. I'm sorry but Derek and Dom are not Darius Miller. They're not going to contribute consistently every game and they're not going to play big in big games consistently. Until we will it with such a team team, this will be my logic. Now, I'd love to have Young and Knox commit to this class and have a crazy loaded class but I don't think that will happen and we possibly won't get either now. So, I'm hoping a couple grad transfer will see their value here with this loaded class coming in. A proven high percentage grad shooter would be amazing for this group. And I'll take a sharp shooting SF grad transfer too. That would be my ideal class. Oh, along with Bamba too!
Sounds like he has a little Terrence Jones in him.
In what universe is Green not a good shooter? Guy shoots close to 50 percentThis too a T. Vanderbilt is a great pick up but Cal HAS to sign some shooters because right now none of the recruits can hit the Bree consistently. Green is a considered a below average shooter and the Canadian can't shoot at all as well as Vanderbilt. It should be a good defensive team but struggle in the half court big time.
The good thing is most will be back for year two (very likely all of them would be back for year two). There isn't anymore shooters who are also very good players left other than Knox as far as who Cal is recruiting so hopefully he can get two grad transfers who are 6'5 and above and can shoot
Both. Are you saying that Cal is trying to go big as a intended scheme or that Cal can't pass up a certain type of player when there may be a better team fit by recruiting down a tad . You may be saying neither
Actually, it doesn't. Who in the hell is Rick Richards?
All these posters who are making fun of the "we need shooters" crowd who always bring up Cal's Final 4 appearances as a reason to worship him....do you realize how many final 4's he would have won had he actually had 3 point shooters? The only team that had 3 point shooters was the freshman combo of knight and lamb. Laugh all u want and throw them final 4 appearances out there...but had he had 3 ball shooters (meaning more than one at a time) he would have at the very minimum 3 championships here!
With Young and Bamba, we have our "board wish list" pretty much completed:
Shooters- Green and Young.
Shotblocker- Bamba.
True SF- Vanderbilt.
Bruiser inside- Richards.
Inside/outside threat- Washington.
Experienced depth- SKJ and Humphries.
Ballhandlers- Green, Young, and Alexander.
Rebounders- Vanderbilt, Washington, SKJ, Bamba, Richards, and Hump.
What does that leave? Senior leader? Maybe Cal signs a grad transfer?
If we don't sign a couple of good shooters they will put four defenders in the paint ( Green can hit enough to keep his man honest) , making driving and offensive rebounding very difficult. Can dribble and pass but not shoot. What if they back off of him and double someone else. kind of like they do Briscoe. Then what? Is it too late to learn how to be a good shooter?
Vanderbilt isn't a true 3 but everything else looks good. Guys like James Young or MKG are true 3's, Vanderbilt can handle and shoot decently for a 6 foot 8 guy but he should and would play the 4 for every other team except for our "position less" system.
Actually Young is probably the best shooter in this class of the top 40 players. And we are at worst tied for the lead for his services. The only other shooter of Uk caliber ( Cal ain't going to bring a just a shooter as he won't be able to defend) was Walker but walker wanted nothing to do with a bigtime school hence he spurned top 10 programs Zona, Nova and UK for freaking UM. But you are correct this class was very very short of elite guys who can shoot. Green is a damn good ( not great) shooter though so not all is lost. There was 2 or 3 great shooters in this class and we missed on them.. So you get the best of the rest and roll with it.. It happens sometimes,, get over it..
So you got dope for Christmas and want peace on the cat pawI haven't been a member too long, but the amount of drama and bickering amongst grown *** men on a message board, who are fans of the same team and are all here because we care more than most, is certainly something. We have a lot to be happy about, this year and beyond. There are concerns too. And we should be able to voice both without people throwing up their arms and singling people out who we disagree with. Idk. We have a great community here that I'm happy to be apart of - let's embody that and have a dope Christmas. Go Cayts
Edit: A little late for this as I was catching up on the thread, but I still think it's relevant.
So many fans are gonna be disappointed next year if they really think Green is a shooter. He's another Briscoe. An unathletic pg that can't shoot from outside.
The ones mocking fans that want shooters are complete morons. It doesn't have to be all one way or all another. Yes, get the type of players in this class is great but there absolutely has to be atleast 1 if not 2 good shooters mixed in. Next years team won't be able to hit anything but a layup or dunk as it stands.
one of those is more true than the other! So you got dope for Christmas and want peace on the cat paw
He's not a great shooter, passer, or dribbler so how is he more of a 3 than a 4?No, he would not either. He would play the SF at alot of places, depending on need. A "true" 3 is versatile and can do everything. That's funny you call Young a true 3 cause he couldn't dribble all that well, couldn't pass at all, or play a lick of defense. You're right about MKG though and Vanderbilt is a similar type player. You're solely looking at height but not skill set. Vanderbilt is an extremely versatile player. Only thing lacking is consistent outside shot but that can be worked on.

I love the way some people on this board talk about who can shoot, who can't shoot, rebound, defend etc. And i guarantee 99% of them have never seen the players they are critiquing play
Yeah cause when the stats show they've hit 19% from 3 and under 50% of free throws for their JR. and Sr. year and summer leagues it means nothing .I love the way some people on this board talk about who can shoot, who can't shoot, rebound, defend etc. And i guarantee 99% of them have never seen the players they are critiquing play
What makes you think Cal would play a JC player or grad transfer over a non-shooter potential NBA draft pick? There are still graduate transfers, junior college players, reclassifications, and decommits. Multiple other avenues for us to try and fill the gaping void of shooting on next year's roster. Far from over as it stands today.
Briscoe is athletic compared to your average 20 year male but by NBA standards he is very below average. He's 6'2 and has to really try to be able to dunk. He's got no hops and he's got below average speed, even for a college player. He appears to be a better shooter than Briscoe and Briscoe is athletic, to say other wise is just stupid.
Wow how spoiled are we, complaining because we got the #22 player in his classGod I hope this doesn't hurt us with Knox .

He's not a great shooter, passer, or dribbler so how is he more of a 3 than a 4?
lol, little late to the party aren't we . Who's complaining ? Vanderbilt might end up being my favorite player . But I was also hoping for Knox . And yes I'd rather have a top 5 ranked player over a top 20 ranked player . I'd LOVE to have both .Wow how spoiled are we, complaining because we got the #22 player in his class
