so, we have been reduced to fighting over this... starting out as a looooooong off-season
Yeah Harden is better. What?? Reggie was fantastic! He was entertaining, could play both ends of the court, was clutch, and is in the trash talk HOF. Harden and Reggie are nothing alike.

I know this it OT, but why did they lock the happy chandler thread? I didn’t see anything negative unless it was taken down already. It’s truly the goat of my old Kentucky home. I want even seven yet but wow. GoosebumpsIs a travel
That step back three is clearly a travel. Any college player who wants to adopt that shot shouldn't. Sometimes it's more obvious, such as that last one he made tonight. But hey, if they allow you to fake left, then take 2 steps back or to your right, it's easy to get a shot off.
And his last play in this game was an obvious charge. But you think they're calling that at Houston? Not a chance.
Speaking of which, did you see the guy for the rockets flop like a fish when he was barely touched on the elbow to the head? I don’t think it was austin rivers but that would of made sense since he was taught by the bestWell, I agree with you that Reggie was a ton of fun with the clutch shooting, trash talking and all that.
But @Cindog28 is right with how he shamelessy tried to draw fouls. Dude was the all time master of that trick where you kick your leg out toward the defender to draw contact while you shoot. Hell, he practically invented it.
This. Hell, my wife even knows this. She said the exact same thing. She said, "well, they don't call walks in the NBA, they allow four or five steps." [laughing]the whole thing with traveling. no one is right or wrong here because the nba doesn’t call it. somewhere in the mid to late 90’s, probably when guys like ai came in, they stopped calling it the same.
you use to have a step while you secure the ball and one step after the plant. so the securing of the ball and the first step happened almost simultaneously. now you get two steps after the plant. and many times the ball isn’t even fully secured before the first step because they’re bringing it back in from a crossover etc. to people who watched the game before the late 90’s it regularly appears guys are talking 3 and 4 steps (the foot shuffle to square the shot not even being considered).
the nba allows three steps and has for a long time and it doesn’t bother me anymore. but four is ridiculous. there’s no way you should have to learn defensive timing 3 different ways in your adult playing career and expect to be effective without ample time to fail. this is not good for the game.
Didn't say he wasn't. But Reggie was more versatile, played both ends of the court well, and was much more entertaining. Not to mention he didn't take 90%of his teams dribbles and shots.Yeah Harden is better.

I posted something I wasn't supposed to. :flushed:I know this it OT, but why did they lock the happy chandler thread? I didn’t see anything negative unless it was taken down already. It’s truly the goat of my old Kentucky home. I want even seven yet but wow. Goosebumps
Thanks for ruining the fun cinI posted something I wasn't supposed to. :flushed:
Hey Gonzo, the 2 steps are allowed on a shot moving toward the basket, but not on one 25 feet from the basket going backwards. It's a travel. If he picked up his dribble as he was doing a jump step backwards (where both feet land simultaneously), then it would be legal. That may have been what he initially was trying to do there, but that's not what he's doing now. I think his "move" has evolved. Haha! Now, he's picking up his dribble and taking 2 steps back and to his right. It's an obvious travel.
By the way, I really don't care about the NBA. I watch some of the playoffs at times. But I do have a passion for the game, as many others here do, and for the rules of the game. Harden is breaking those rules and being cheered like a hero. What a joke!
If it's a travel then so is every layup shot in the last 50 years.
You can gather and take two steps. going backward instead of forward doesn't change that.
Yeah Harden is better.
Chicago Rapper/Savage lol Fredo Santana . He died last year .Random, but I’m just curious and have been for awhile lol... who is that in your avatar?
The "gather" cracks me up in the NBA rule book. A player not too long ago clearly took 5-6 steps when going to the basket and they explained it away on the NBA ref twitter as being a gather and two steps. LOL Even the national media picked up on it. It's a joke. 2 steps is the rule and always has been the rule. The NBA changed their rules to cater to the street ball style.
maybe you could link op to the former head of officials twitter account? It’s not a travel according to NBA rules. It’s been debated over and over. The former head of officials has explained it several times on his Twitter.
Actually, in real basketball it's not two full steps. Once the pivot foot leaves the floor and you take a step, you have to shoot or pass the ball before the pivot foot returns to the floor. So you aren't really getting a full two steps. When I was a kid they used to refer to it as a step and half because you have to get rid of the ball before the pivot foot hits the floor again. The NBA is a joke because they actually loosened the rule on traveling, but it seems that in all levels of basketball, they aren't as strict in calling certain things as they should be.“Gather” is a stupid NBA term. In real basketball you are allowed 2 steps, otherwise it is a walk. Done.

No doubt, he's a great offensive player, one of the best in the league in an isolation. He's nearly impossible to guard, but if you let him get away with that move, he's unguardable.
Anyone here ever wonder why we've never seen this move before? In all these years, no other NBA great has come up with this move. Not Jordan, not Larry Bird, nobody. Know why? It's not because Harden is a genius of basketball moves. It's Because the move isn't legal. Haha!
May be boring but 30ppg is 30ppg no matter how flashy or uninteresting it is. He's effective.

Harden also plays absolutely NO defense. For a pro athlete his lack of effort on the defensive end is pretty shocking.

It's because the game and the understanding of it has evolved. People didn't take that shot for the same reason that 4s didn't space out to the 3 point line, long 2s were in vogue despite lower points per shot to most 3s, no one understood gravity, and no player had a leash to take step back 3s like Harden does. But here in 2019, smart teams are realizing what wins games. So we have Harden taking (and making, let's not forget, because he's the best in basketball history at it) step back 3s at a rate of 1.20 points per possession, which is phenomenal. http://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/26118445/these-step-back-3s-sent-another-planet.
You're about 2 years behind on your meme take and woefully uninformed. Harden does not fight through screens (due to both effort and ability), necessitating a switching scheme. But Harden is elite at post D, which is what matters to that defense b/c on a switch Harden is cross-matched on a bigger player. So Houston has to work around his defensive limitations, but once they do he's competent at what he needs to do.
Reggie Miller was fun to watch running around screens, but otherwise he sucked to watch. And Harden has a much higher usage because he's awesome at offense; if Reggie was as good at creating offense, he wouldn't have needed to work through all those screens (and his teams would have been much better).
But otherwise sucked to watch......
THAT is the NBA mantra. Got nothing to do with basketball. Everything you stated is a lot more applicable to fan candy than it is basketball.
What had evolved is an understanding of what sells tickets, not what makes for effective basketball.
This post is illogical idiocy. That guy quite intelligently explained why the way the game today is "effective basketball", and your response is merely to claim it's not with no explanation.
Believe it or not, teams in the 80s and 90s really were not playing the game the right way. They did not adequately understand the importance of spacing and three point shooting, and took WAY too many difficult contested mid range shots when they'd have been better off shooting from deep.
There are multiple reasons why the game is played differently today. For starters, those rule changes removing defensive physicality had a HUGE impact, all those muscular enforcer types like Rick Mahorn and Charles Oakley were suddenly kinda useless under the new rules, and they soon began to be replaced by these skinny three point shooting "stretch" 4s we see today. But also smart people just figured out there was a better way to play. Put more perimeter shooters on the floor, space the floor more, and you'll win more.
The reason you didn't see Harden's step back threes 30 years isn't because it was illegal then. Instead it's just that players back then hadn't yet figured out what an effective weapon it is.
Zones were outlawed due to fans.
This statement alone shows how ignorant you are. You don't even remotely know the facts.
Zones are NOT outlawed. It's true they WERE outlawed back in the 80s and 90s (you know, that period when guys like you thought the NBA was super awesome), but that rule was changed and zone legalized starting the 02 season. Seems you're not even aware that happened.
You have no idea what you're even watching. You come off as just a dumb angry old man screaming at the wind.
Point is the rules are driven to generate fan interest. They always have been. You are one narrow minded youth that lack the vision and experience to see this. Your view of basketball too limited.
I just like the fact that he's rockin a sort of President Rutherford B Hayes ...
