Is this team deeper than 2015?

ESPN stats show Kansas took 684 threes in 40 games and Kentucky took 581 threes in 34 games. That is an average of 17.1 threes taken per game. Not sure if CBS or ESPN is accurate. But even if CBS stats are correct then Kansas took approximately 2 more threes per game than Kentucky. That shows you are wrong when you state Cal clogged the paint with a bunch of bigs.
First of all, you can't just lump all 36, or 40 games together. There were games where UK took less than 10 threes, then there were games where they took 20+.

In the NCAAT, UK crapped its pants, KU rode hot outside shooting to play 5 more games and win the title. Those are the facts.

The youth thing is an excuse. Cal is responsible for the roster. His short sighted recruiting is what frequently leaves us in rebuilding mode. It’s happened to him multiple times now.

If youth is the problem stop using one and done as your main recruiting pitch. Sell the program instead of the nba.
Actually not an excuse. Bottom line is he can get those players. You may not remember the Tubby days where Tubby simply refused to get down in the muck with AAU players. Fans castigated him over it. Would be the same if Cal passed on so many top drawer players. Fans would not stand for it. So you are left with so called Diaper Dandies. Super athletes with suckage for defensive and team basketball skills. Tough damn problem to solve consistently. Couple that with the utterly random nature of the tournament and you end up where we are.

The finger pointing is nothing more than a display of ignorance. Strip 4 or 5 players off this team and tell me which 4 or 5 you’d replace them with 2 or 3 years ago knowing what you knew then. Further, how many of those do you think you’d retain with the portal given the influx of top quality athletes (not basketball players) each year?

It’s not any one coaches fault. This is chaos in the upper ranks of college basketball.

You ignore facts because they tell a story you don't like. The facts prove you wrong that Cal clogged the paint with bigs. Your mind is clogged with hate for Cal that clouds your opinion which makes you look very bad at times. Enjoy.

Then post the facts that debate my facts.

So far, you have posted nothing but a chapped attitude.

Throw em out here so we can look what you are going off of. I can't wait.
I just posted the facts you omit. That’s all I ever need do. Your points are childish drivel.

That is why you have averages. So a player that scores 50 points in his first game and zero in the next game should be given the scoring title even though his average per game is 25 and two behind a player that scored 27 and 25 in his two games. Got it. So averages mean nothing.

How many people do you need to hear it from before you realize Cal's offense is outdated?

People that study basketball have been calling it archaic and the proof is in the pudding. Look at Cal's records the last 7 years, look at all the failures.

1 title with all the talent he has had? Come on man, wake up.

Then why is UK always ranked as one of the worst in 3 point attempts, makes and percentage every year?

UK was ranked in the 300's last year, how is it possible that you think being ranked that low in 3 point shooting stats, is okay?

Doesn't have anything to do with your quote that Cal packed the paint with bigs. Totally false statement.

That is called variability, and EVERY team has it.

If it is FACTS you want.
1) UK did C*** it's pants as you say, HOWEVER did so with 40% of our starters playing injured at like 80%. Oh, and those 2 guys, were our best 3 pt shooters (before that game)!!!
2) UK scored 79 pts in regulation, that should beat ANY/EVERY mid-major EVERY time. The Defense, or Lack of Defense is the biggest reason we lost

But keep ignoring the FACTS.

To expand on this:

3-PT Attempts - Kentucky was 326th at 17.5 (KU - 265th, Duke - 177th, UNC - 110th at 23.5)
3-PT% - Kentucky was 118th (KU - 54th, Duke - 42nd, UNC - 64th)

The teams that are winning titles have a set identity, that hasn't been a phrase you would use to describe UK under Cal.
There are games where UK shoots 20+ threes, but then, the next game, they shoot 10.

Heck, twice, UK went 0-fer from 3 point range. They hit zero threes… .twice. How about those facts?

Cal's first, second and 3rd options, are to feed the post and what's even funnier is he instructed Keion Brooks to take 1 step inside the 3 point line and shoot it. That’s the worst shot in basketball. But Keion took it to another level, he was shooting those bricks with 15 seconds left on the clock, like he's Steph Curry, Cal kept encouraging that garbage.

Go back and read Western's post, UK was rated deep into the 300's in 3 point attempts, makes and percentage. Does that seem fine to you?

Now THOSE are facts that, for whatever reason, you chose to ignore, but I'm used to that with you Cal first fans.

Another MATH FACT. If you make 20% from 3pt range, and 40% from 1-step inside the 3pt line, then that 2pt shot is a better shot for that player.
The EV for his 3's would be 0.6 points, and the EV for his long 2's would be 0.8 points.
So you are wrong!

He shot about 10% from 20', you know this. He got hot in the KU game and thought he was going to do that every game.

In this era, the 3 point shot is a primary weapon. KU, Baylor, Villanova, uNC & even UVA, used the 3 point shot as a lethal weapon in their tournament runs, Cal is too stubborn to do that.

Sure, if a guy like Monk, Murray, or Grady goes off, he'll go with it, but Cal's stance on that is that it's not sustainable. Well, he needs to start paying attention to the teams that are winning titles and pretty much every NBA game. The 3 point shot is the #1 option now. It just is and if you think a ranking of 326 in attemps is good, well, you have no idea what you're looking at. You're not going to win in this era being ranked that low when the teams you’re playing are killing you from the 3 point line.

2015, Booker was on fire for most of the year, when he actually got a look and Cal wasn't forcing the ball fown low, but Cal never used him as a primary weapon. He never set any screens for him up top to get open, Booker had to get his own. He was an afterthought in 2014/15, but he was an NBA all star almost as soon as he got into the NBA.

Let me ask you this, when have you ever seen UK under Cal, set high screens to get elite shooters open? He doesn't do it, because he doesn't want to bring a second defender out there. That’s just dumb, especially when our opponents do that very thing to us all game long.

We have CJ Fredrick on this team as well as 2 or 3 other great shooters, if he doesn't set high screens to get those guys open, well, he’s leaving a lot of points on the table, that’s just not smart. You can't make CJ get open by himself. He’s a damn 45% shooter, get him open looks any way you can.

NO!!! Wallace is the only sure fire NBA future player. Frederick, part time player at Iowa, Reeves transfer Illinois St, Wallace true freshmen, two skinny forwards that are finesse type players, with very little handle, freshmen Livingston. Against Mich St we had 2 players with 5 or more rebounds, Oscar (18), Wallace (5), St had 5 players with 5 or more. We were lucky to be able to be in position to win. IMO, after Christmas holidays things will look better, but this team doesn't like to play physical at this time.

My biggest concern is defense, you have to want to dig down and make efforts to be good at defense. The only two that even approached good footwork in the Gonzaga were Oscar and Wallace and the Zags took advantage of Wallace's inexperience on picks. Communication on the defense is imperative, especially with players that haven't played together very long.

One caveat, if I may.

If Cal would have kept platooning, and went small with the first unit, I think the platoon could have continued to work. Instead of moving Lyles into the starting lineup, move Booker in and replace Booker with Hawkins and continue to run the platoons. I think they would have been a major boost to our offense. Three shooting threats in the starting five instead of two. And I think he should have trusted Hawkins enough to give him that second guard spot on the second unit, instead of pretty much abandoning the platoon after a few games without Poythress.

PG Harrison/Ulis
SG Harrison/Hawkins
SF Booker/Lyles
PF WCS/Lee
C KAT/Johnson

Keep platooning with a 25/15 split in minutes and continue to just wear teams out.
That's what Pitnio did. It's a strategy that works....if you head coach is smart enough to employ it.

No....I've been a bit surprised that our talent isn't as deep as I originally thought. We have Oscar, and he's a great college player-maybe a good NBA Player but the verdict is certainly still out-and Wallace who is a future NBA player-but after that...the cupboard starts thinning out. It seems like the rest of the roster is comprised of players whose weaknesses balance out their strengths.

What a difference in my perception and now reality does one month make!!!

I've been humbled as much as the team with this thread.
