I know this will be moved or deleted - but damn things are just not going well for me right now. Work, family, friends - everything in a serious funk. I’m tired, I’m working too hard and not getting any return. This is the only place I have to vent. Just getting some out. That’s all. I have to make some life changes quick.

Carry on brothers. Carry on.

I'm a big believer in the idea that there are 4 aspects of your life that lead to a meaningful existence:

  1. Family
  2. Faith
  3. Work
  4. Community
If you find meaning in 3 of the 4, then you will most likely lead a meaningful existence. And if you seek meaning then happiness will most likely take care of itself. When I feel frustrated or down, I always go back to these four things. I pick three of them and I go do something for them that week with no expectations of a payment--monetary or emotional. When I do that, when I try to extend myself openly in these areas, I am almost always picked up because I see meaning again.

So, perhaps you could:

  1. Go out of your way to knock down a barrier for your folks, your wife, or kid.
  2. Spend a little time talking to the big man. He's given you all the tools you need to get to the end of this dark tunnel, just tell him that you need help finding those tools.
  3. Help out someone at work who is just barely hanging on. Someone there is in a real rough patch, just like you. If you can help him get out of that hole, then you have real purpose and life will begin to look up again.
  4. Perhaps there is somewhere in your community (school, veterans center) where your talents and skills would be helpful. It's hard to feel bad about your life when a man who fought for our country is thankful for you .
Regardless of what path you choose, you should know that there are all kinds of people pulling for you, people that love you and care about you--including people on this board.

God speed, friend.

Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles of any kind come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing. -James 1:2-4

My favorite scripture that brought me through a lot

I started reading the Bible again and being that’s my name, I looked at the first words under the title James- “rejoices under the cross”
Now some would ask how you would rejoice under a cross?
My sense of humor has carried me through quite a lot.
Guess it’s inherent in a James?!!!

Thankyou for sharing the word.

That #3 is where God manifests as human. You can preach all day, sing to
Yourselves or pray in church,
But you put your hand in another’s hand, the other hand on your shoulders, bow your heads and let the spirit work with prayer or just quietness.
Think about how rare that is in daily life but how normal it is in church and just what that feeling can do- Why aren’t we doing this more?

Great comment blue rattle

For me, 1,3, and 4 all fall under 2--as does everything. I love your suggestion though to seek meaning through exercising in these areas. It is a great way to redirect or change your perspective. Often, in my opinion, perspective is the problem more than anything. How we look at things is what we consider our reality to be.

I'm in the same boat BWO, and I feel your pain. Been fighting depression for some time now. Trying to stay away from medicine, and not telling my doctors about it, at least for now.
You have my sympathy my BBN friend, and I truly hope things work out for the best for you.

If you have a great wife and kids, a job and a house as you say, anything else is gravy. Figure out what's causing the drama or pressure and deal with it, if possible. If you can't control it, screw it, move on. I was in trucking for years, every year my liability insurance would go up, a lot most times. I could either pay it or quit, did no good to worry about it.

Hope you find your peace of mind brother and also hope you never have to turn to anti-depressants. FWIW psilocybin (Magic Mushrooms) has proven to be a real alternative to anti-depressants.

Thank you BSC, much appreciated. The mushroom thing wouldn't be feasible for me, as I am subject to drug tests. :)

I’m sorry to hear you’re down BWO. I will keep you in my prayers and I hope you find resolution and peace sooner rather than later.

If you are a man of faith, turn to that faith along with friends and family. Those 3 things have gotten me out of more breakdowns than I care to admit.

Best wishes and god speed in your recovery.

My grandfarher told me--------"Son, if you'd quit worrying about whats wrong, or what you don't have, you'd see all the things you have to be thankful for." In other words---Be thankful for a job....a family, and friends. Take time to reflect on the positive aspects you have. I think we all have been through these types of times. Myself? I grab my rod and reel, head to the lake for the day. Turn off my cell...And for a day---man its just me and the lake. ANd of course there is prayer. Not to push religion. But that works for me.

I wll place you in our prayers my friend.

@BlueWorldOrder74 - not sure exactly what has you down, but it sounds like you’ve put a lot of pressure on yourself. It’s not selfish to take care of yourself.

Also for me this past week, I’ve found that sometimes it is ok to just let the world go on and move around you. Things will get done (or maybe not and it won’t matter).

I pray for peace and strength for all of you that are hurting.

Here’s what I do:

1. Go get a hand axe
2. Head to the woods
3. Find a big tree (preferably a dead one)
4. Wail on it till you chop it down
5. In this heat the only thing you’ll worry about is a big glass of ice water and some air conditioning
6. True story

That method also helped me quit smoking years ago. Really helps with anxiety, something I deal with often.

Sounds stupid but it works for me. Good luck buddy.

There is no time like the present to start a new life with a new attitude. And, more importantly, there is no better place on earth to do something positive with your life than the United States of America.

The blueprint for success is already here--you fill in the blanks by pulling yourself up by the bootstraps and getting yourself on the road to success. There is help here in literally thousands of ways to turn things around and to get going in a positive direction. Dream your dreams, then follow them, even if they are done in small steps at first.

"Be true to yourself." my mother told me before she died. That means to be realistic with your achievable goal-setting and to put yourself on pathways that you know you can and want to achieve. One of the best ways to immediately improve life is to volunteer your services for someone or something else.

Make changes immediately as needed. Get your financial "house" in order. Slash spending now if it is out of control. This more than anything else keeps us bound in shackles for a lifetime if we do not learn how to manage our money. Find legitimate sources of help. Lose people who are "losers." Follow rules and laws, and start building credibility through integrity, honesty, and great work ethic. Take stock in what you do have instead of what you don't yet have. We all won the lottery by being born American citizens--take advantage of that! Spend a lot less time on this site, facebook, etc if you do that. Find mentors who will help you in your time of need, but don't take advantage of them and don't think they're your solution--you are the solution. You take the laboring oar and start rowing lots faster than ever before. It takes hard work--success, like freedom, is never without blood, sweat, tears, and supreme sacrifice.

Commit yourself to those who will take care of you. The Air Force took care of me and my family's needs. Teaching took care of me. My work now is rewarding and it takes care of me and my family. Find someone who will return the favor of your hard work by taking care of you. Out of ideas and still eligible to join the armed services? Do it. Joining the military is life-changing, a great grounding experience, and is rewarding. It sets you up very well for a career or for the rest of your life.

All the best...keep us posted. Giving up is not an option!

Be careful being inconsistent with your medicine and untruthful with your doctors. There is no shame in taking medicine for depression. It's a chemical balance issue in many people that they can't control. I've personally seen a very positive result in family members who have used medicine to fight depression. That said, medicine is not for everyone but be careful with deception because that is another form of denial which can be deadly when it comes to fighting depression.

Just adding my own personal experience If I'm not settled with # 2 -- Faith .. If I knowingly sin and get selfish and try to outsmart or hide from God , I'm miserable until I humble myself and go thru a process of healing and having the courage to even talk to God again .. dont know about others but after some of the things I do and say, and type , I feel like I cant approach Him . Just not worthy . But His word tells us we are . And its true . Peace to you all , including myself hopefully . I just screwed up yesterday AM and feel awful about it . so if # 2 isn't good , I struggle with 1,3 and 4 .. But Rattler's advice is spot on .. go do something in 1,3,4. and your #2 will grow .

I feel for you BWO. Keep a positive attitude when it seems dang near impossible to. Try to focus on the little things that give you joy.

I just got married (July 6th) and hours into our honeymoon, my wife's father passed away. Then we get back home in Maryland, and our basement had been flooded for two weeks while we were gone (had a Kentucky wedding). Everything we had down there was ruined, including my framed autographed Wall and Towns UK jerseys ugh! Brand new lawn mower broke down as well, at least its under warranty. I am just trying to keep a positive attitude because there is nothing we can change about the past. Keep moving forward.

Thank you for this.
Hang in their buddy. I’ve been going through some **** as well. Not only did I survive the car crash, but on June 23 they took me to the hospital I had a blood clot in my lung as well as pneumonia in the other and had no clue. I’m am prone to blood clots. Unfortunately, it’s something I have to live with. At 16 I had a 90 percent blockage in my pulmonary artery. I lived with it for over a month and the doctors treated me for pneumonia, until a cat scan revealed what it truly was. If that happened today I would be dead. I had to go to California for the life saving surgery in 2005. Just a few years ago the blood thinners failed me and I ended up getting clots in my stomach. I was with in hours of death. I blacked out from the pain. God was with me that day because I had somehow sent my brother a text saying I had to go to the hospital. I don’t remember anything except waking up in icu and my stomach split open. So I have a scar going from my chest all the way down my stomach. Needless to say I won’t be going to any beaches because it bothers me. I have to go in again and have surgery on my hernia from the stomach surgery. I try to stay positive by talking with my blueblood brothers here and cheer up those who need it. The one thing I know for a fact is gone isn’t finished with me and he has a bigger plan in store for me. I’m only 37 and about to be 38. There are so many things I will accomplish but you have to take the good with the bad. You have my thoughts and prayers. Keep the faith my friend.
