They have kept it in the family since Dean Smith, so if they continue that, who’s available?

So where is the talk of UNC being irrational? And the talk of you can't treat a beloved alum that way? And UNC deserves all the bad that happens to them?

Davis has been much more successful than Pope.

And to be fair UNC should make a change.

Yes they should. He's made a title game and choked away a title. Pope hasnt come close to that.

Good for them. They actually have standards unlike us. Hubert aint capable of winning a title. I know he went to the championship game his first year but he had Roy’s players. And I don’t care what anybody says, you can bet Roy Williams was helping to coach that team too. Kinda like Jim Calhoun and Kevin Ollie.

Maybe they’ll give the ole “vote of confidence” so atleast he’s there another year but this AD hire makes me nervous for us. It can’t be a Mitch guy or from within if we are going to get back to acting like a blue blood. Not sure why Mitch can’t take his 2+ mill “incentive package” and leave the athletic dept alone and why we are potentially letting one guy have this much power at uk.

If they fire him, the replacement will be an interesting data point for one of the ongoing debates here about how much “blue blood” status still matters. Personally, I won’t be surprised if it ends up being someone like Josh Schertz or Brian Hodgson instead of just taking their pick of coaches from current Final Four contenders, but I’ll own it if I’m wrong.

Pete Thamel just said there will be a meeting next week to determin Hubert's future. Then he said there will be a new coaching staff next year at UNC.

I washoping they would give him another year
I heard that same interview with Thamel and he seemed to say that either Hubert will be gone or he will stay but his staff would change. It was a little confusing the way he ended it with the 'there will be a new coaching staff next year at UNC.'

Also listened to Scott Van Pelt with Goodman and he said if they decide to move on from Hubert, he would have someone hired before Davis was informed.

That's what I was thinking. "Y'all ran off a coach that got to a final four".

It's the old saying what have you done for me lately. That F4 and runner up bought him some equity with UNC ND 4 more seasons. But sounds like they've seen enough.

A blue blood shouldn’t have such high standards. He’s dealt with injuries, he needs more time. If you don’t believe me ask 3-4 people that post here daily that don’t like if we have high standards at our program. 😂😂😂
After his first year, he missed the tournament, then a Sweet 16, then 2 first round exits. Hubert was given 3 more seasons to get it right AFTER missing the tournament. If Pope had that kind of record, I doubt anyone would want him given another year. I know I wouldn't.

Some of us would just like to see what Pope can do with a 3rd year. I don't think that is unreasonable.

I’m just teasing people on here. I wouldn’t be surprised if a couple would want to keep pope no matter what his record is though. He’s definitely loved and admired by some. lol

He was the runner up fist season so they had to give him the extra year or two. Pope sweet sixteen and then gets extension. UK athletics has lowered their standards I guess and that’s unfortunate

"This is Kentucky"

These chicken little threads really crack me up...so UNC might get a good HC...Oh my goodness, the sky is falling...they might get the only good coach in America!

Its like the recruiting threads...Oh no, Duke signed a top HS kid, we might have to play with six kids next year like on Hoosiers....

UNC fans want outside the family and I see no way they have anyone inside. They’re going to have to go outside likely. We will be in this same position soon, most likely. Hopefully we don’t drag this out too long, if something doesn’t turn around fast of course. 3 years is plenty of time in the NIL era. Get to the big games win constantly or it’s done.

On that one you and I agree. Next year is make or break.

I worry we’re going to “eat last” among the blue bloods. UNC picks up an elite coach this hear, then Kansas does next year while we piddle around determining Pope should get a 4th year or not. Where does that leave us beyond picking the leftovers?

It may not matter cause it seems like Pope is coming back regardless (which i dont fully agree with).. but I dont like that UNC is potentially getting out ahead of us for a coaching search.

Theres still a chance that Pope has to go simply because the new AD and/or GM wont want him.

He definitely should be fired, but given they always hire family I don't know who they have for options.
Serious question: Why would they hire family now? The reason they did it before was to keep the academic fraud ongoing. In fact, Dean Smyth specifically told Doherty not to touch the academic support program.

When cheating is institutionalized like it was at UNC, they pretty much had to hire family. Now, with NIL and the transfer portal, there is no need to do that anymore.
