Would you have said that before he won the title? That is a serious question. If so, what does his resume show that would make you think he
I didn’t say he was uk material before he got the Florida job? While he’s been at Florida he’s proven himself to be a good coach. Idk how you can say he hasn’t? Hes a jerk, but he’s a good basketball coach. Are you saying he’s not? I don’t get what point you’re trying to make? Florida took a chance on him and it worked.

This is worst case for us. While we have to keep Pope another damn year, UNC will fire Davis and get either Oates or Golden. Wouldn’t shock me if Self stepped down this year or next and KU got whichever UNC doesn’t, leaving us with nothing yet again because our inept AD is slow to pull the trigger.
If Kentucky doesn’t hit a home run on the next hire, that’s all she wrote for the basketball program. You can’t sustain a program while the other blue bloods aren’t resting on their laurels.

He was the runner up fist season so they had to give him the extra year or two. Pope sweet sixteen and then gets extension. UK athletics has lowered their standards I guess and that’s unfortunate
They should use Barnharts reign here as a teaching example for interns and college students.

That would teach them the types of long term contracts that you do not negotiate and how you don't conduct job searches for high level positions at a blue blood program.

Barnhart is the real culprit here with him hiring unqualified coaches and giving incentives/extensions for lower standard results. I mean a bonus/extension for making the S16? Maybe at a football school or lower level program.

There was a time the S16 was pretty much a given each year at Kentucky. Now we give bonuses and extensions. That's on Barnhart smh.

If they do fire him, it will be interesting to see who they hire since they normally want UNC guys to lead the program.

Nah nobody wants elite jobs with resources and a fan base like Carolina. Hubert made a NT game and they fired him. Why would any coach want to go there?
Pope cult: “Sorry, coaches only don’t want to come to Kentucky. If it’s another school, that’s different.”

They’re like the abusive hubby who tells you that you can never do better than them (Pope).

He tried to play tough guy and say we could take” this off this site” I was teasing him about saying Todd goldens not a good coach.
There was a really solid study published recently on the rise of online rage among men under 45. It dug into the psychology behind it and the subtle factors that fuel that anger. One of the key ideas it highlighted is something we call the “backfire effect” in psychology. The tendency for people to double down on their beliefs and become angry when they’re confronted with information that contradicts them, even when the data is clear.

Then the confirmation bias, the gaslighting that’s routine with new hires especially when they’re linked to your past causing emotional strain, and the likely hero-dissonance when the person you watched as a kid and believe in no longer is seen as the vision you’ve created. And if you don’t know to look for these things there is no check. He’ll be fine, eventually it comes full swing and you have to accept and move on.

This is one of the most bizarre phenomena in sports fandom to me. I’m not sure what it is, but a belief that sports coaches are the only profession that

1. Competitive men want it easy
2. Talented people don’t want the best jobs
3. Talented people don’t want recognition and fame
4. Only sub level average coaches want great jobs
5. Talented people don’t care about great resources

It’s likely just some sort of excuse I’d guess but it’s weird and you’ll notice this said quite often.

You’ve trolled this board for years, dude. I’m not even sure you’re even a Kentucky fan. How many handles have you had now, Morg?
I don’t know, I’ve had a few I couldn’t remember the password. I had one before this one that when the merger happened I couldn’t log in. Had about 2? Maybe going back to 2001ish?

Which has what to do with an offer? My fandom isn’t questionable that’s just obvious lol.

People don’t realize we’re likely looking at Kansas and maybe even Louisville looking for a new coach next year. If we get blown out tomorrow, rip the bandaid off and move on before UNC does.

It’s embarrassing we have fans trying to say Todd golden isn’t a good coach because they want to somehow compare him to our coach. Makes no sense to me. I don’t like how he acts but he can coach.

Yea I mean any coaching change or any change that you need mass support in general, you’re going to have gaslighting. Given these circumstances it was put on strong, this wasn’t a lightweight attempt. You had to sell Kentucky fans on hiring an unqualified coach with a bad coaching record. Which, winning would make irrelevant but even with cash he can’t recruit anybody. That’s what is going to crash this quicker than I think they even realized.

Guy is awful. But most great coaches are, saying Golden can’t coach or to even come close to comparing him to Pope either means you haven’t looked at their history and are parroting something you’ve seen, or stuff is hard for you. Really no in between.

Davis sucks but he had a legit top 5 pick go down right before the tournament. Not like the “paper” starters UK claims to have lost all year. Lowe was our only guaranteed starter and JQ was always a question mark. Kam has been misused all season even before injury.

Pete Thamel just said there will be a meeting next week to determin Hubert's future. Then he said there will be a new coaching staff next year at UNC.

I washoping they would give him another year
He was an uninspired hire to begin with. Roy wanted to keep it in the UNC family, AND he wanted to be able to appoint his successor, so Hubert was given the job. Kind of like Guthridge getting hired after Dean retired. The only good things I can say about UNC are the following: a-they ruined Coach K's final home game at Cameron and then proceeded to hand him his final career loss in the historic first ever meeting between Duke and UNC in the Final Four and b-it has been tremendously satisfying to see Kansas routinely defeating them in the NCAA tournament ever since Roy boy left Lawrence. The Final Four victory over them in 2008 AND the National Title game comeback in 2022 were especially sweet.

Reality is UNC and their fans have higher expectations than we do right now. Kentucky fans are fighting over whether Pope should stick around while the admin sucks their thumbs. It’s freaking miserable.

They have kept it in the family since Dean Smith, so if they continue that, who’s available?
yes they are quite incestuous like that. One of those programs who always seeks to "keep it in the family" when making a hire. Ignorant and arrogant. The first and ONLY concern should be...who is the BEST CHOICE to lead the program moving forward, alumni ties be damned.

UNC will get a elite coach we will have Pope the next 3 years.

Golden IMO ends up at UNC
I disagree. Golden has it made at UF. He (and Donovan before him) has already proven that you can win BIG at Florida, and you don't face the incessant pressure to do so every single season, as you do at a basketball first school like UNC. I think with NIL, etc. that the "prestige" of the blue blood jobs has taken a hit from the time we were kids. Not every talented, young, ambitious coach wants to wind up at a Duke or UNC or UK, when they can rake in millions and win national titles at schools like Nova (Jay Wright), Florida (Donovan and Golden), etc.

Also he’s just now entering the conversation of being one of the best great coaches. His ego is likely going a bit nuts right now. But Mark took his player and was able to pay to do it, Florida doesn’t pay what we do. So he’s got every right to laugh at the guy for having way more money and not only getting owned by him but can’t even come close to his success. I mean these guys are not choir boys, he wants to bury Pope and so it looks mean but it is what it is.

Golden knows with Kentucky resources he might be able to battle to be the next Rupp / K / Knight.

Find the post where I’ve explained how little sense this makes. No; great coaches want great resources and fame and recognition and they want the best jobs. Donovan won 2 titles and would have been at Kentucky had it not been for the NBA. Unless there’s a reason, like family or something similar, most great coaches want great programs. The post is above.

**** now that is a tough call. To be fair, Golden is more of a smarmy, trolling jerk, while Hurley is more of a faux "tough guy" loud mouth jerk....kinda a wimpy, wannabe Bobby Knight for the modern age.

Scott Strickland done a good job hiring Golden. His resume wasn’t the best for sure but it was a gamble that worked out for him. I’m glad Strickland hasn’t been doing as well hiring with football at least

Yea can’t knock him, but he got really lucky. I really don’t think he knew whether it would work or not, but maybe he saw something in it. The guy is 50X the AD of Mitch. I dont know if there’s a worse AD in the conference.

My company is tanking and the employees don’t show to work! but I know I know I’m the one that hired them yada yada blah blah!!!

It’s amazing when you take some of this stuff and just change the wording.

The point is that Florida did take a chance just as UK took a chance on Pope. If he had been fired after 2 years, there would be no title. Posters want Pope fired after 2 years of better performance. Pope is who is always has been, according to many on this board but somehow Golden boy wasn't even after 5 years of mediocrity. I honestly don't get that logic.
