Honest Question for ND Fans

A relatively small percentage of ND's roster comes from the midwest. We focus primarily on Northeast, Texas, South East, and California.

And we're going after "higher profile" or "more competitive" recruits....which we can really only do with success if we're frequently playing games in those areas, imo.

It's even harder for ND than it is for Ohio State or Michigan, because we can't (or won't) take numerous numerous prospects due to elevated academic restrictions/requirements.

Personally, I think "regionalizing" ND's schedule would have a STRONG impact on our our recruiting.....and I'm far from being alone on this.

Correction. ND's academic admission standards for football are next to none as a rule. Very much in line with Michigan and OSU. Nowhere near NU's and Stanford's. Sorry to burst your bubble. But former admissions and athletic reps at ND have spilled the beans. All other sports have standards in ascending order from men's basketball to women's fencing.

How do they do it? They require the kids to go to class and turn in all assignments with significant tutorial help. But the receipt of a degree is guaranteed as long as you attend class, take the tests and turn in any assignments.

Professional sports are exclusively not covered by anti trust. Have to feel NCAA would fall into same realm

I seriously doubt that it would, as I believe other cases have already found its subject matter eligible for antitrust litigation.

It seems virtually certain to me that any system that would expressly bar any team in the FBS from competing for the championship would be an obvious antitrust violation.

Now, if the teams in the for conferences you were discussing where to be formed into an entirely new division separate from the current FBS… Then I think you might stand a better shot.

Anti-trust isn’t really my area of law though, so you would definitely want to ask someone who focuses more have a way there.

This is both in accurate and not addressing what I was talking about anyway.

Sorry to burst your bubble.

Notre Dame has significantly elevated admissions standards relating to GPA, test scores, and especially to class requirements in math, science, foreign language, and other disciplines.

Every year there are numerous, numerous fairly high profile recruits who we are interested and who expressed mutual interest, but we definitely aren’t able to pursue do to me is elevated academic requirements… Who then end up at a school who uses only the NCAA minimums (like Ohio State and Michigan).

Stanford is on debatably alone as the gold standard for admissions criteria, with Notre Dame, Vanderbilt, Northwestern, and Duke being together in the next tear down.

None of that addresses the academic experience once you’re admitted and in rolled in school, which are also wrong about at Notre Dame, and I’d be happy to address further with you if you’d like.

I actually was a tutor for student athletes when I was a Notre Dame student, which was only a handful of years ago.
(So I do know what I’m talking about here)

Credibility is priceless. You just spent much of yours. Not sure how much could be left. Just because it’s a party line at ND doesn’t make it true. Let’s see. ND admissions officers reviewing transcripts of football prospects know first hand the truth. ND associate athletic directors coordinating the process know first hand the truth. And recruiting coordinators at places like NU who see numerous transcripts of those prospects signed by ND know first hand the truth. But you know better. That’s called being full of **** sir. This is completely inaccurate.

We can discuss prospects from this very year, such as Joseph Anderson (now committed to South Carolina), who is an example of exactly what I've been talking about.

You make a lot of claims without any meaningful support. Unfortunately, everything you said is inaccurate.

Please feel free to link to CREDIBLE reports that ND doesn't require GPA/ACT scores well in excess of the NCAA Minimums, classes in excess of the NCAA requirements (math, science, foreign language, etc.)

As someone who has actually worked in EXACTLY the department you're talking about, I can tell you that you're full of BS
(I tutored multiple football players in Chemistry, Calculus, and Economics)

You talk a lot for someone with no knowledge, at all

So Mr. Knowitall. Prove yourself. While I am certain you can’t do it, it will be fun to watch.

1. What specifically are the “significantly elevated” academic standards at ND you speak of? Given your intimate knowledge of the situation please give us specifics.

2. What is your source of knowledge regarding NU’s -Stanford’s - Vandy’s and Duke’s football admission requirements. Again, you claim ND falls in this group so you can surely tell us what the SAT/ACT/GPA parameters for all these schools are.

3. I’ve given you my firsthand sources regarding ND’s actual admission practices. Not too much for you to do the same. What are they?

4. Spare us the tutoring nonsense. When and under what circumstances have you seen actual transcripts of prospects denied admission to ND?

5. Are you aware that the minimum core curriculum requirements for admission to ND are waivesble, and have been waived, but only for football players?

There are no links to personal relationships with people who are in the know. And ND will never make public the truth. So asking for something that doesn’t exist is just part of your desperate clinging to a fiction. You can choose to believe whatever you want. But as I knew would be the case your entire claim to reliably know anything is a lie.

I'll respond to your questions, despite the fact that you've FAILED to provide any support to your incredibly inaccurate claims:
  1. The NCAA minimums are a 2.0 GPA and a 17 on the ACT. ND requires more on both, but uses a combo of the two. Meaning if the athlete has a 3.6 GPA they may accept a 20 ACT. If the athlete has a 28 ACT, they may accept a 2.8 GPA.
  2. My source of knowledge on other schools recruiting practices comes from recruiting reporters. For example, Stanford requires multiple AP Classes in order to gain admission, plus a very challenging ACT number. Vanderbilt uses a combo system, much more like ND.
  3. Are you confused?
You haven't provided any LINK TO CREDIBLE info, despite your claim that you've seen these "credible sources" write about it.
I've already told you what my 1st Hand experience is with the ND recruitment and admissions are (student athlete tutoring and they recruited my younger brother for golf)
  4. As I've told you, as a student-athlete tutor at ND, I've spoken with numerous athletes at ND about their academics, their recruitments, their class schedules, etc.
I was told repeatedly about what the requirements they had to meet (class-wise, especially)
  5. Finally, you just completely outed yourself as having no actual knowledge on the topic. The minimum class requirements to get into ND are absolutely not waivable. Under any circumstances. Not even for 5* football players. They’re minimum academic requires to get in, 100% non negotiable.
So I’ve now reloaded to and debunked each of your points, one by one.

When can I expect hoseikes to the “credible sources” you have claimed???

I have nothing but respect for Northwestern, both as an academic institution and as a football program.

I have a uncle who went there (teaches there now too) and a cousin who is considering both ND and NW for undergrad. He can't make a wrong choice there.

I don't want to start a fight here, but in terms of what ND in terms of what ND is trying to do... that’s not good enough for what our goals are...

And just how well have you done in terms of accomplishing your goals? What has all this incredible national-level recruiting gotten you?

As best as I can tell, the answer is nothing. Well, nothing but laughingstock and hypocrite status for all the nonsense and arrogance your fans spew in total denial of the reality that you haven’t won a damn thing in 30 years!

You haven’t won a national title since 1988 and you haven’t beaten Northwestern since 1994.

In fact, the last time you beat Northwestern, Monica Lewinski wasn’t even a White House intern yet! That’s how long it’s been.

Get real. All your recruiting has gotten you nothing. Other than embarrassment for the academic cheating, the prop 48s, the vacated wins, the rape scandal, Lizzy Seeberg’s death. Need I go on?

And for what? Total, epic failure at everything you claim to stand for and zero titles since the year the Reagan Era ended (and you needed to resort to admitting Prop 48s just to get that one).

Pathetic.

Apologies for my over the top response to your previous post. I'm known for knee jerk reactions. My son did well by his ND education. He had two majors, aerospace engineering and theology. We called it a wing and a prayer.

Wow. Not much of a comeback. Are you an alum or a subway alum?

Rankings are meaningless. You were ranked #2 not all that long - and got ceremonially blown off the field in 8 minutes by Bama. So color me unimpressed by a #3 ranking when #2 didn’t do you much good.

An alumn.

And I’d much rather make the NCG game and lose than never even get close to it. It’s pretty meaningless for an unranked team to say that rankings don’t matter.

ND hasn’t achieved the goal, but we’ve come close and the number of recent 10+ win seasons (3 of last 4, counting this year) shows that we’re one the right track.

Recruiting is obviously critical to being able to win 10+ games regularly and then push for shots at the Playoffs/NC

Suggesting that high-level recruiting isn’t important is just foolish.

No need to feel sorry ....IP. The whole academic fraud NCAA sanctions at ND, the ones that involved multiple football players that were academic cheaters and absolute misfits at ND, were just a baseless vendetta by the NCAA. Nothing to see there. Fake news.

Those in the know saw it coming. That’s what happens when ND sells the glittering stage that is ND football to prospects with 2.6 core GPAs AND sub 20 ACTs AND Ds on their HS transcripts. Kids not interested in or capable of the academic demands do desperate things to stay on the stage.

Maybe ND has cleaned up its act since. I hope so.

Idiotic response, which continues to show your lack of knowledge of the situation.

I was a student-athlete tutor during the exact year in question (2012).

The “scandal” was 4-5 players who were getting too much help from a tutor (not me) who was basically doing homework for them.

ND found this out (through and email mix up by the players) and self-reported to the NCAA....bc that’s what ND does.

But as UNC has shown us, the NCAA is completely inept. They only punish those who self-report and they get scared off by threats from an institution who literally commits fraud (by offering fact classes) and has the entire university’s accreditation put on probation.

The story your trying to weave never happened...and if you actually had knowledge of the situation you’d know that.

So I do feel sorry for you, because I typically pity ignorant fools who run their mouths without any actual knowledge of the situation being discussed, ultimately resulting only in their own humiliation.

You might want to seek a rebate on that degree if you read my comments to you as suggesting that high-level recruiting isn’t important.

It certainly is. And you get tons of top recruits — and accomplish next-to-nothing with them! In fact, less than nothing:

You have no national titles since the Prop 48 debacle (and by the way, these days (as opposed to the ancient history times when ND was relevant) titles are now won on the field (unlike most of the ancient history beauty-contest wins you call titles).

And on top of zero national titles you’ve sprouted a bevy of problems that you don’t seem to care a whit about as long as you can keep sniffing Alabama’s jock straps up close and personal, at least for a few minutes before the inevitable blowout commences.

As an alum, you should be embarrassed by how your program is now plagued by all the problems that go with Alabama/SEC football - but with none of the titles that go with them! It really must suck to be a total afterthought like ND has been for 30 years and never be in touch enough with reality to ever realize it. I actually feel sorry and embarrassed for you.

So the only accomplishments that “count” are NC’s??
In that case, does northwestern even have a football program?

ND hasn’t reached the goal that it wants too, but it’s getting closer and it’s doing that through improving recruiting (among other things)

Also, your complaints about academic issues are a non-starter. They are extremely few and far between, and vastly outweighed by the academic achievements of the team.

Heck, I tutored one of our QBs in organic chemistry and we currently have an electrical engineer up for the academic heisman...while also being a team captain and a future NFL draft pick
(It’s a real shame that he may have to sit out the NW game with an ankle injury)

Our program is doing pretty well...although we obviously have a long way to go in order to meet our goal...and that’s largely thanks to the higher level recruiting that you’re criticizing.

.

So which is it, Friedman?

First, you argued that ND deservedly has loftier expectations for the performance of its football team requiring recruiting only the best players so as to win national titles over the likes of your true football powerhouse peer programs like Clemson and Alabama and the Florida schools and OSU - and that your standards and expectations are far loftier than us meager NU fans could ever possibly comprehend.

(Even though you haven’t beaten us since before Netscape debuted).

Now you’re asking why it isn’t ok for ND to be satisfied with less than the national titles you just said you aspire to? And then you question whether NU’s program even exists. So are you saying we didn’t beat you? Those games never happened?

Which is it? Are you only satisfied with national titles and therefore have higher football expectations and aspirations than us commoners, or not? Can’t have it both ways. Can’t come here and condescend to us commoners about what sort of expectations real programs like ND have and then turn around and whine when faced with the fact that you’ve epically failed for 30 years to meet those expectations.

And for the last time, I’m not criticizing your recruiting. You get amazing recruits. And you do less than nothing with them. I’m criticizing your staff.

I don't think it is the preference on the part of the ND fan base that keeps Notre Dame Independent in football. It is only the ND fans over 50 who are adamant about ND not being in a conference. Most of the younger fans I have spoken to or who have voiced their opinion on message boards fall into two categories - (1) makes no difference to me or (2) ND should join a conference in football.

It is the ND administration who feel that there is value in ND being Independent in football that transcends what happens on the football field. They see the football team as a way to publicize the University and to play in front of alumni groups across the country. They see Independence as being important to the Notre Dame brand.

Whether there is truth in that belief, the administration clearly believes in this "value".
I'm 27 years old and I can tell you with absolute certainty that I don't want Notre Dame to join a conference.

Are you drunk?
Or just really stupid??

You’re trying to equate “not winning a national title” with “doing nothing”.

One can have a goal of winning a national title, and even being disappointed every time one falls short of that goal....while still acknowledging that many of the accomplishments short of that are not “nothing”

ND hasn’t achieved what we want to in quite a while, but we’ve done quite a bit more than nothing.
(Making the NCG, win 10+ games repeatedly, etc)

Both of these phenomena have been largely dictated by our recruiting (though also infulecend by other factors). We have tvrruuited well enough to accomplish some things...but not well enough to win a NC, which is why we’re still working to further improve recruiting.

Your own inferiority complex is come through strongly in your posts, taking offense where there is no reason to and conflating issues to justify your thin skin.

Sober up and see if you’re able to address this topic intelligently (or at least like an adult) a bit later.

I withdraw my apology. Looks like I was right the first time. You started by saying you didn’t want to start a fight; yet you ended up here.

I know a lot of ND fans agree with this, but as a follower of both teams, let me tell

Yep. Not difficult to prompt these types to expose themselves. Clinging to fantasies and lashing out at those who don’t bow to the altar of their shaded, at best, making. A terrible reflection on an otherwise great University.

They don’t want the truth. They can’t handle the truth. Unhinges them every time. All par for the course.

I didn’t start a fight.
I simply responded to someone who chose to do so, quite foolishly.

And I couldn’t care less if you apologize or not.

I came to discuss some football, which I thought your fanbase may be able to handle like adults.

Some of you clearly are...and some of you clearly are not.

So I’ll gladly engage with those that are, while laughing at those that are not.

That’s more than fair.

Yeah....”the truth” from a guy with no knowledge of the situation or the departments and no support (at all) for his baseless claims.

Pathetic.

Though I do love your attempt to claim that I’m the one who’s unhinged, with @BobbCat14 going completely off the deep end.

Location-wise, it makes sense for ND.
And everything seems to make sense from the Big10 perspective.

But....most other things don't make sense from the ND perspective
  • The Big10 would "regionalize" ND, where as the ACC would allow us to play in the Midwest, North East, and South East regularly
  • The Big10 would force us to play 9 Conference games, the ACC as already agreed to only have 8, if we join....allowing us to keep more of our traditional opponents
  • The Big10 schools/culture are focused on large scale, large population, post-grad research over undergrad education...where the ACC is far more focused on smaller student bodies and undergrad education
  • The Big10 has virtually no religious institutions, while the ACC has several
  • The Big10 wouldn't allow us to keep the NBC deal, the ACC has already agreed to that
When you consider everything from ND's point of view, the ACC ultimately makes more sense
(if we're ever to fully join a conference, at all)

The interesting thing though is the payout from the Big Ten network per school is more than ND makes on their NBC deal. Why the ACC lets ND play in all other sports aside from football has been a bone of contention with some of the member school i have read over the years.

After reading this “discussion” about ND’s admissions for athletes I can tell you the following.
I’m from Indiana but attended USAFA. (Thus the ND & AF in my name).
I applied to two different military academies, Notre Dame, Northwestern & three Ivy League schools among others. I can tell you that Northwestern & ND have very, very similar admissions requirements for athletes. And that was before ND made them more stringent. It was a lot harder getting through admissions at military academies than it was either ND or NU. But all a very respected institutions, so I’m not sure why a couple NU posters are attacking ND admissions?

...and all I wanted to know was if Notre Dame fans missed being in a conference. :)

It’s hard to take your posts seriously because you obviously have a hatred for ND that skews your view.

Every school, ND, NU, military academies, Ivy League schools, etc, have academic fraud.
The question is what do they do about it? ND has shown they will discipline the students/athletes & turn it all in. That is the definition of integrity & what many universities won’t do to protect athletes.
