Rob, that seems to be a better reason. Not disagreeing with PTI at all but something else has got to be going on. I know a developer selling land they planned to develop in a few years to finish off neighborhoods right now. That is going all in on the short term and just seems odd.
I work with the buyer in the situation and he said the land reappraised for 3x what he paid for it.

The response "well wtf do you expect me to do about right now?", while appropriate 100% of the time, leads to conflict 100% of the time for some reason.
-The build up and anticipation for the impending Ball family drama/bankruptcy/legal drama is going to be delightful.
-Derby and Oaks outfits are picked without a purchase. Proud of myself. Long gone are the days of flying to Chicago to buy a suit. #PTIwouldbeproud
-Housing market needs to hang on for a bit. At least another year before dumbass finds a way to ruin it would be great.

-Haven't looked at anything. Last year hit up Harmon's boy fatbaldracing for his handicapping picks and did pretty well both days. Came out well ahead. Not throwing down that type of $$ this year, too stressful.
-Big vacay on the horizon. Yeah yeah. Summer kicks in full tilt after Derby. Work going to be bonkers soon. Sunset after 9p. Lots and lots of nice lil rides. My time of year.

My wife is building a chicken coop. It went from a $270 coop from amazon.com to now probably costing around $600-$700 and that is with some of the materials being scavenged from the office. We also get a deal because the guy building it works for us and is doing it on the side. This is probably around a $1000 coop for 6 chickens all because BBC. 6 chickens only cost $20. Freaking crazy.
Stuck going to my first Oaks tomorrow. No idea how much this crap is costing. I know the tickets ended up being $440 for 4 tickets (bleacher seats like a baller). Shoot me now.

Tired of Willy ruining this thread with his domestic ********.
When I talked to the guy he was booked for at least 6 months and I told him people are raping this guy, told him previous bids, and to do what he could.
He said he would put a job off but may lose it.
Honestly he may have made some calls and rearranged his schedule to fit it in, or called someone who he subs out sometimes.
Either way knowing the material cost and previous bids I will defend the guy I referred as it sounds like he was not at least saying "oh your bids were 42K well I need 40K".
Per Willy's post his labor on the call back plus material is roughly 30K less than other bids.
Some hipster friends of mine went the chicken coop route a few years ago. They ended it after the chickens ripped one another's guts out more than once, IIRC. These are committed people - like "washing cloth diapers at home for five years straight" committed.
It does make sense since eggs are so expensive - which I'm sure you've pointed out to your wife in a nice "break even" Excel graph.

I'm likely to have a chicken coop in the next year or so. Always loved doing farm work and you get free eggs out of it. I'll be building it myself though because that's part of the fun.
I get 30 eggs for $5. You could have bought 6,000 eggs for the price of that chicken coop. But with about 5 chickens it shouldn't take you but a couple years and a lot of egg eating to "recoop" your losses.

-i understand the market and escalated pricing bases on scarcity of labor...but unless there was a design change and he is willing to do the job for 45% less in labor signals he was trying to get over on willy.

The odds that a contractor who will just up and drop his price by $10k actually finishes the job in a timely, quality fashion is basically zero.
My in-laws did the chicken coop thing a couple years ago. He spent forever getting plans and built most of it himself. Painted it, made a little sign, just really took a lot of pride in it. More than I've ever seen them take in their own home. Bought three chickens, who proceeded to do what chickens do: **** all over the thing. To keep the grass from totally dying, they'd move the coop from spot to spot every few days, resulting in half-brown chicken-coop sized patches of grass covered in chicken turds. The chickens were duds who didn't lay many eggs because they were too stressed, likely from being disoriented every few days. Then a coyote ripped open one of the screens and ate them all.
But those few direct coop-to-skillet eggs were the best tasting eggs ever (they weren't). Enjoy!

Yeah, but if someone wanted me to clean out one month's worth one chicken's **** from a coop I would charge at least $250. If we're talking five chickens, the value of my time is $15,000 a year and I'm never getting ahead on this deal.

Dude knew the original quote so he came in solidly lower. Then probably remembered this was for a friend and dropped to break even or below.
MOST contractors have no idea how to price. An epidemic, really. Timely skilled labor is f*cking valuable. Charge for it.

Have f*cking fun with that. Those things are DISGUSTING disease ridden monsters. They just **** everywhere and it's awful. The eggs are without a doubt better but not that much. Plus, you can drive out to the country and buy fresh eggs any day of the week. Seriously, if you don't clean daily it will get out of hand. Hipsters these days. The best is when the in laws were producing eggs and I got them free. The worst was when I was a kid and cleaned the coop with my grandpa. I'll never forget that smell, surprised I still eat eggs after that.
Also, DON'T buy goats. They are crazy little *******. Grandpa bought about 10-12. They would get stuck in the fence and kick bite the piss out of you. Then one day they ate through the fence, got into the barn and ate a eggshell foam mattress and most of them died. F*cked up animal. Honestly, if you're not a farmer don't try to act like one.

Not hippies in the normal sense. There aren't a bunch of people listening to the Grateful Dead and Phish burning patchouli. It's more people that are okay living on a boat and rowing in to town every day. To me that sounds pretty terrible, but hell they're saving 12K/year doing that. And for someone trying to do as little work as possible for the rest of their life that's quite a bit of coin.
Dude I know down here (really nice but a UL fan) works 2 hours a day, 6 days a week, makes $1800/month and brags about how he's killing it. Different strokes and whatnot.
