-6 months was about my breaking point as well. Thankfully that's when sleep consultant got the dude sleeping 12 hours per night.
-I passed the Derby baton years ago. No way I can do the Wednesday night party, Thursday at the track/late night bar scene, Oaks party at my house and go to Derby anymore. Been doing Oaks/Derby for a few years and love the current setup we have.
-No desire to leave the state during the best week of the year. Derby is fantastic.

-Headed out there today with some clients, then having my (real) family over tonight for dinner. Little bro is arriving from NYC today with his lady. Haven't seen him since the shitastic thing that happened this winter... looking forward to beers with that dude.
-Oaks tomorrow with two other couples. Covered box. Dress warmly --> profit?
-I'm always struck with a flood of Derby memories as the day draws closer. Some really great ones, some good ones, and one or two bad ones. Regardless, it really is an annual touchstone in life that helps keep things organized in my mind.
One of my favorites came in 7th grade when I signed up with the parish youth group to sell bottles of Coke in the Paddock. Made a $100 or so in tips in a few hours, then my buddy and I (replete with our Aramark badges) said F this and started testing the limits on our approved access via elevators and staircases. We ultimately made it to Millionaire's Row and watched the Derby on the balcony with some old timer from New York who thought it was the greatest thing he'd ever seen.
A bad one came in 2013 when we travelled to Bloomington for my youngest brother's Law School graduation. A happy occasion otherwise, Mom was just about to start testing on what was making her stomach hurt. I think we all knew something was wrong, but had no idea (or didn't want to believe) the extent of it. You can't disassociate the bad things that happen in and around Derby, unfortunately. They're welded together.
Ultimately however, the majority are good ones, and they all blend making a kind of potpourri that leaves me both nostalgic and proud as a Louisvillian and Kentuckian. Weather be damned, enjoy it. And who knows, maybe your horse will come out a winner.

"Working" Derby in grade school/high school was awesome. We did the Coke advertising out on Taylor Blvd. Just 35+ 6th graders holding Coke signs acting like fools laughing at the drunks be carted around in ****** pickup trucks. In high school cleaning up on Sunday was pretty disgusting but the hope of finding a winning ticket on the ground kept you moving forward. That and the tons of women's under garments was hoot. Thursday at our HS was essentially voluntary and Friday we were off.
Worst - MCF can attest, sometime in college hadn't really slept in a couple days, pounded a bunch of whiskey, stumbled around the infield faling over tents and coolers, almost got into a fight, temporarily detained in the infield jail, left on the side of Longfield by a cop in a golf cart. 1 of 16 people kicked out that year. Yippee.
Best - All the other years. Mud wrestled a few years. Walked in with a 12 pack my first year without being stopped. 1st strip club experience that same year at Deja Vu. House parties circa 2003-05 were over the top. Love that place.

The older me enjoys seeing how the Infield is now more of a class type of operation with people dressing up for the occasion but youthful me says these high school and college kids are really missing out on the total and outright debauchery that was so robust back when the infield was really the infield.
These kids won't have to carry any creativity with how to sneak your booze in bc from what I've gathered that's all fool proof now and the security is insane. There can't be any convincing some gal you knew to stuff your Bourbon in zip lock bags in her bra, or injecting Paul's Fruit Market OJ gallons with vodka. They won't know the feeling of getting through the gate with your Jell-O shots in tact at the bottom of a styrofoam cooler from Thornton's. It all just looks so civilized now. Do they slam down frosties as fast they can on the Watterson while the poor DD drives and passes around a one hitter? The third turn was where all of the action was. Making out with random drunken strangers while looking in one direction & seeing some helpless soul puke all over himself. By the time My Old Kentucky Home played the drunken euphoria and excitement was definitely still there but there were dead soldiers all around passed out on whatever they could rest their head on. Total chaos. Fights breaking out here and there. Lassies flashing their tits while up on some dude's shoulders. The youthful buzz from a cigarette was fng intoxicating. How do we get home? Some people we came home with were now missing. Just remember Central Ave and or Taylor Blvd and have plenty of cash post race to hail down a cab or pay a driver for a lift. There was just something special about getting that 2 liter too to come off just right without breaking the seal so you could dump it out and fill it with contraband booze. Took a few attempts but when you got it you really felt like... something. Probably like how the pharaoh felt when they finished the pyramids.

20th Derby and 17th in a row for me. Will be getting wet in 111 on the first turn this year.

-Douglas lake, tn(near Sevierville ). Rent a house w/dock...done it a few times. Im sure there is a way to rent a boat...I always borrow one. Further away(but better) is lake lure, nc. Love Cumberland and Dale Hollow (more)...but having to drive to the boat is a hassle. If you are a skilled pilot you can rent a houseboat...parking a shoe box on a windy day is hard. Although I know some marinas will have guys pull out/park the boat for you.

SIL has been trying to buy a house for a year now with no luck. They found one they loved in St Matts last week and offered full price, plus closing and told owners they could keep all appliances and they didn't get the house because someone offered more than they were asking and paying cash.
That is about the third or fourth time it has unfolded that way.

There is a shortage of houses for sale right now in Lexington, so it's as good of a seller's market as you'll ever see. In certain neighborhoods, a house isn't on the market for more than a day. It's nuts.

Most of the people I sell to have gone from 50/50 contract/spec to almost 100% contract. Which is great and I'm seeing more houses, but things tend to stall because homeowners have no clue what they want but "know exactly what they want".

- Turns out throwing a temper tantrum is the way to get people in my wife's family to make life decisions. Despite a vacation being booked to shop the area in Florida and try to come to a conclusion in August, my wife has let me know she has made up her mind and doesn't want to move there and my MIL is the main reason.
Of course I'm supposed to feel better about setting up the vaca because her parents are now paying me back for that. Actually it does make me feel better so there is that.

All of this plus inventory is SUPER low. The market considers 6 months of inventory a good balance, right now it's like a 2 month inventory.
I've never attended the Kentucky Derby. Damn shame, too. I've been to the Oaks twice, but not the Derby. Need to fix that soon.

Boy howdy wouldn't that be something. Used to be called bachelor parties but since all my friends are married with kids now I'm just left hoping for the inevitable divorce parties in the coming years, which I'm assuming are a thing.
I appreciate all your help, Krazy. He called back and left me a message. He came down to 10k in labor. That is a heck of a drop in cost from his initial offer.
I haven't called him back yet, but it is probably still above our budget for this. I at least have Marge considering it, though.
But I'm pretty sure I'll be able to convince my Dad's retired friend to come out of retirement and do it for 3k or less.
