I was a Cal guy in 2007, wanted him bad. Even rooted for Kansas - of all things - in the 2008 NCAACG, becuase I thought if there were any hope we'd ever get Cal, we'd have a better shot if he didn't win a title at Memphis. So that's where I come from on Cal.
That being said, it's far past obvious that this is not sustainable. He did here what he came to do, and has been said numerous times, he's no longer doing what he's paid to do - I'm not just talking about losing games, I'm talking about his misplaced priorities.
Something keeps popping in my head from when Cal left Memphis and came to UK. I don't know if it was Parrish, some other Memphis sportswriter, or even a sportswriter quoting a Memphis fan / booster, but the quote was something like:
You'll love him for a few years, but by the end of it, you will hate his guts and want him gone.
The thing that struck me was it wasn't emotional, it was just very matter-of-fact, from someone who knew him well.
Didn't think much of it at the time, but for some reason it keeps popping in my head the past couple of years. Not saying I'm there, but I'm starting to see how it could happen . . .
