I usually agree with Rudd on most food, but the okra take is bad. Fried, pickled, or especially in gumbo, okra is good.

Proper jambalaya requires the viscosity okra brings to the dish. I’ll fight for the honor of proper jambalaya to the death.

-having grown okra...there is a tiny window when its edible. If not picked at the right time its stringy and gross. If its fried youre tasting the batter, if its pickled youre tasting the vinegar/spice...in a soup/burgoo its filler.

I've grown to despise any food that is bastardized by the inclusion of something "sweet." Pickles should not be sweet. Barbecue sauce should not contain molasses or honey. Chili should not contain cinnamon or brown sugar. Pizza should not contain pineapple. Hams should not be "honey-baked."

I've done all of these things. A bit of salt in the batter helps round out the sweetness in pancakes.
My grandparents sprinkled salt in their grapefruit, so I do sometimes too. It takes the edge off the bitterness.
A bit of sugar in a steak rub will give you an amazing sear on the finished product too.
