Someone who is immersed in this (anth), please help me understand something:

-Everyone praises NYC for having the virus under control.

-The entire nation locked down from mid-March until June. Then in July, we started seeing spikes in FL, TX, etc. - when they mostly took the same measures as NYC.

-Seems to me, NYC benefited from the lockdown that covered the entire country, because, coincidentally, that happened at the right time for NYC. We should have done more targeted lockdowns -i.e., NYC in March through May; then focusing on other areas in June and July.

Just tired of hearing that US citizens F'd this up by refusing to comply. Also tired of hearing that "NYC did it the right way" when most of the country did the same thing that NYC did.

Seems to me that everyone bent over backward to comply for 2-3 months. If gov't had directed a more targeted, rolling approach to the lockdowns - i.e., lock down FL and TX at their peak (in June / July) not prematurely in March-April just because NYC was at peak, we wouldn't be hearing how NYC did it the right way and the rest of the country are defiant rubes, and we are solely to blame because this thing isn't beaten yet.

Please help me understand, because I'm admittedly a Stupid. Also, some of my assumptions may not be entirely accurate, I don't know.
Make your own conclusions why that's the narrative. I have mine.

NYC/NJ/Conn/Mass didn't do a great job AT ALL. To be clear their death rates are higher than anywhere in the world. But it's unfair to really criticize them because it's the worst case scenario for a virus. Tons of people, major hub, dense AF, mass transit, elevators and by the time they realized it was going down we weren't ready. Their issues also occurred in prime season where these later case increases, not really spikes, have happened in the off season for viruses. The biggest criticism is Cuomo signing off on sending nursing home patients back into the homes. That's really bad.

What NYC did right was hit 20+% of population getting infected. That seems to be burnout for the densest areas. It's not herd immunity but good enough to stamp out any increases with draconian lockdowns accompanying high seroprevalence and ridiculous amounts of testing/tracing. If they weren't being so ridiculous with this stupid, "NYC did it right", I'd feel sorry for them. Same people writing those articles are also writing, "Sweden really f*cked up" articles.

Florida and Texas did a good job. Death rates are really low.Appears a lot of the spread in those states started with migration workers and spread from there. They also benefited from a delayed increase and learning from NE mistakes. Death rate is really low, ltc rates for their demos are really low, hospitalization has been really manageable. All while having fairly relaxed lockdown measures.

Thanks, some of that is what I thought. And agree on the media, "narrative", politics, etc.

One of those situations where I needed a sanity check, e.g. wtf am I missing here. Sounds about right.

I see that some sportswriters are pushing "some SEC towns are at 100% capacity in the ICU" in order to get the SEC to cancel.

What is that - 5 to 10 beds in many of those towns?

Same thing in CA. The Latinx (not a typo that’s the CA way of addressing that community) is disproportionately affected by Covid. A lot of it is agricultural/migrant workers. Dirty topic that no one wants to talk about. So they just apply the numbers to everyone to make it “sound better”.

Have the LatinX stuff in TX also. The border numbers are what is causing TX numbers to increase.

You’re also not allowed to say “white” without adding “privilege” after it. Go take a ride around town with Nancy Pelosi and she’ll catch you up.

So Nick “Glass Joe” Senzel now has the ‘Rona.

If he’s not getting hurt every 5th game he plays then of course he gets it.

- Disappointed to see the Grizzlies lost today in the play in game, but having Dame in the first round vs LA[laughing]

Portland is a horrible matchup for LA with Nurkic healthy. Should be fun.

Guess I’ll start watching for the playoffs now and hope for some competitive play in an exhibition gym.

- Miami Marlins, Covid ridden and lowest payroll in baseball, lead the NL East. Hell yes I like a shortened season.

- The Come Back Inn was perfect for dinner. Caponata for an app, and Bolognese for dinner.

Followed by a few glasses of Weller Full Proof.

- Fantasy Football research[eyeroll] for what? Sure I’ll play, but I won’t spend a second beforehand worried about stats and projections.

I’m glad to hear that, Gatton. You won’t be disappointed. And if the tippler is out of rehab and his wife tries to make Thanksgiving dry, I’ll just tell her we’re reducing the numbers due to Covid this year. Put one in the “positive” column for Covid right there, btw.

When I moved to Alabama back in late 2007- the very first person to reach out to me was Woodfordandwater. He introduced me to a lot of folks- got me involved with some different groups, and was generally just a selfless, good friend for the next dozen+ years. I know many folks will only remember him by his online character, but if you ever got to hang out with him- you were better for it. I know that I saw him countless times with his children and I can only hope that one day I will be as good a father as he was. There won't be another one like him.

Keep his kids and wife in your prayers. I can't imagine what they are going to be going through. Hug your people a bit closer and dont be afraid to tell your friends what they mean to you. I know I wish I wouldve told him just that.

Chad, I'm so sorry. Well said.

I was texting with CC earlier tonight, and we discussed the origin of NJT (seems like just yesterday). CC started it, and had a ridiculous photoshop by Willy with his face transposed over JT's. I think a bunch of us here tried to do a blog post, but like the GYERO sports bar, it never took off. WW ended up taking the whole thing over from CC and became a legend. Dude was a genius, and he made being a Kentucky fan a lot more fun.

You know, we've spent the better part of 15 years with each other here. We've read hundreds of thousands of each other's posts. This is family. And he was one of us. This really sucks.

Prayers for his family. Life is so fragile.

I’m going to have more to say about our man Woodford but for tonight and as far as what us idiots do to keep ourselves sane and entertained from day to day I always felt he was the best. Smart, funny, cutting. I considered him a genius for his NJT work.

Clark knew him well in person and summated what he was where it mattered, though. The kind of guy I think we all like to believe we are.

He was being threatened by that asshat Mecca Card long before he ran with NJT.

He changed his rivals user name from Makersandwater when Makers came out with UL bottles.

He had the UL kickers Father go all in to out him.

He was a thorn in the side of all UL fan bloggers.

Great husband and father. He will be missed.

Crushed. His most recent fb post is heartbreaking in retrospect. In most cases we know each other better than family and "real" life friends. Poured a tall wf double oak earlier. Father of 3 girls, amazing UK fan, one of the real good guys.

Cheers, Woodford. RIP.

P.s. I don't know how public the family wants it so keep off Twitter for now.
