The rationale for Sharpe is that sure he could go anywhere and the agent could rack up debt paying for trainers etc. could also live in big nice houses and get expensive luxury cars, clothes and whatever.

Or instead of spending all that money before he gets it, he could go “enjoy” college life, get some reps in and sit front row to a team that may show him the F4, and pay him to do so.

Cal doesn’t care to exhaust these financial options because what’s it matter to him?

UK should be on his *** over it, but it isn’t the first time nor will it be the last.

Again, you blame Sharpe, ok but it makes a lot of sense really if you aren’t biased.

Yeah that makes zero sense. He would have more money and a better lifestyle elsewhere.

This is all guesswork, but I believe Sharpe came here not knowing exactly if he'd be eligible for the draft or not. I think his camp and Cal were both flying by the seat of their pants. Cal got him in here with no intentions of playing him this year and to expose him to the program, to show him the way things are done, to maybe even "brainwash" him with Cal-speak, to prevent him from going somewhere else, and to keep the shine on Cal's recruiting abilities.

Somewhere along the way, Sharpe's camp got wind of his eligibility and that was that. Catch as catch can after that. Bottom line: Cal got played. He was the sucker for once.

I can blame Sharpe. You're a world class athlete and can sit on the bench while your teammates played through injury after injury? Some with as much as you on the line? That didn't eat at your very soul as a competitor?

I would have hated the kid if I was on the team. TS.

I don't think Cal really got played. He knew everything Sharpe's camp knew. He just has to act like no one could've seen this coming in order to maintain his charade of running an actual college basketball program.

Actually, I agree with this. I just changed my mind. He can be blamed

I think we can all agree this was the inevitable endgame of the “one and done” mentality. It was bound to happen eventually.

Like I said, he’s Canadian and has went to two different prep schools, he could have already “graduated”. If you haven’t noticed over the last few years players can reclassify and graduate at the drop of the hat.
October 13th. You will never convince me that anyone in the know ever thought he wouldn't be eligible this year.

100% agree with you...

...however, not to sound like "get off my lawn old man" but kids these days don't seem bothered by that. At least not the way you described and those of us who played sports would have been violently ill watching him cut-up on the bench while we were getting our asses kicked, down several guards on the road.

If you asked the players about it during the season (paging Tucker), I'm guessing their response would have been something along the lines of, "it's up to Shaedon, he's doing what's best for him and I/we support him...".

The question is if they believe that, don't want to piss off the coach by speaking out of line or just giving lip service?

Or you could argue he figured he knew the likely outcome but it was worth a shot at the #1 player in the country.

Not bad logic but awful PR at a time when he can’t afford it.

I wish Dawg Carruth had been on the team to comment on Shaedon.

I was thinking would someone like MKG let a teammate sit around and watch other guys limp off the court and not step up to help out?

Not a f'ing chance

It would probably have to be Grady or Oscar to be comfortable enough to call them out but also not get in Cal's doghouse for the rest of the season. Mintz has a therapy dog so you know he's non-confrontational AF.

Literally just walked by Shaedon leaving class and getting in his Porsche on my lunch walk. Not sure if he should be commended or mocked.

Additionally, he drives exactly how you would expect an 18 year old with a Porsche to drive.

I think that's it. He wanted that #1 recruit publicity and it was worth the risk. Maybe he tried to pressure the kid by dressing him because he didn't do that with Diallo IIRC. Also, it should be noted Sharpe blew up late. This wasn't a kid in the top 10 for 3-4 years. He went from unknown to #1 like Anthony Davis.

Regardless, it's an odd situation and terrible timing for Cal. Why even come here? How can you trust an elite athlete that doesn't have that competitive spirit(Wiggins/Simmons/Gay)?

Wouldn't bother me nearly as much if he wasn't dressed on the bench going through warm-ups.

Leaving class? Put me down as proud that he is continuing with his studies.

The frustrating thing is we’ve been conditioned with Cal as coach to really just look forward to and build towards March, with the regular season being an up and down slog. But this year was one of our better regular seasons. By late January we looked like arguably the best team in the nation, Oscar had NIL figured out (or so we were told), Sharpe was playing next year, and we had all our mojo back. I’m not sure I could’ve been happier in late January/early February. And then the wheels completely came off. The end to the season was such a gut punch that I’m struggling to even care about bball right now. We had never tanked so bad come tourney time and Cal found a completely new way to be terrible, that I’m not sure where the confidence next year is supposed to come from.

Other than potentially Oscar returning, can anyone name a single thing for UK fans to be happy about right now with regard to the basketball program? I'm legitimately baffled.

As Ron said, things in January looked like Calipari had turned the corner and was entering a new act in his career. Now this is the lowest UK basketball has been since Giliespie's last year and arguably lower since everyone knew Gillispie was getting fired.
