That moment is still the loudest our stadium has ever been despite having played plenty of big games in the expanded stadium since then.Anthony Johnson’s pick six from our own endzone against Bama is hard to top, but so is Mo hitting the floater to knock off UCONN. Dak with “the run” in Death Valley may top them all.
Then I remember after the game, Hugh Durham came up and began speaking with the Georgia play by play guy like he didn't have a care in the world. It's not really MSU or really a favorite but it happened here, but it was one of the strangest things I ever saw on the court. Back either under Richard Williams or very early during the Stansbury years, one of the smaller Tennessee schools came into the Hump. I think it was Tennessee Tech. One of their players got into an altercation on the court with one of ours. It was pretty heated and the Tech guy was going nuts. The coach from Tech came out of the court to try to calm his guy down and the player punched him in the face, almost decked him. The crowd sort of gasped. He had already been ejected and it took the cops to get him off the floor. Two of them escorted him to the locker room. Nobody from Tech would come near him. My old coach Dad said that he wouldn't have let the guy back on the bus after the game.
Another one from basketball, this time from the Bob Boyd years, Jeff Malone's last year to be exact. I was a student. We were up by one over UGA they were inbounding the ball under their goal with about three seconds left. The refs called a foul under the goal on UGA. Hugh Durham, UGA's coach went absolutely insane. He came storming off the bench and got in the ref's face. Tech #1. He kept at it for at least 3-4 minutes, eventually got Tech #2. Then he spun on his heal and marched all the way down to the other end of the court to get in the other ref's (only two refs back then) face, he received Tech #3 as soon as he opened his mouth. His assistants finally got him off the court. Malone went to the line to shoot 8 free throws. He made seven and we won by eight. 7 points in 3 seconds after UGA had the ball under their on goal.
Shot a couple of baskets with Jerry “World” Rice at the Tin Gym one time.... also use to see Andre Agassi all of the time around 1989 in Starkville.Mine is calling the Hogs in front of their section from the field after beating Arkansas in 98 to clinch the West while the goalposts were coming down.
As far as random experiences on campus, the first time I met Jerry Rice in the Tin Gym was a big deal for me.
Speaking of The Fant suspension, I was in the Jackson airport about to start the first flight in my trip to Eugene, when I got word that I was going to the game but Fant wasn’t. That was a sinking feeling.
