West Virginia - Neal Brown

2 conferenec championships. 6 seasons that also included 2 losing seasons. 5-7 and 6-4 in his two seasons in the Big 12. Overall a losing, 7-10, conference record coaching in the Big 12.

Should not be on the list.

Sean Lewis--HC Kent State (young name that will become popular)

Justin Fuente - HC Virginia Tech

He was interested in the job before and I bet he would take the job if offered. He has been at Virginia Tech for 5 seasons now and has an overall winning record in ACC play - 25-17. Won 1 conference title in the AAC and won the division once in the ACC.

I'm leaning towards adding him to the list just not as one of the top names.

I went through all of the active coaches per winning percentage and the top choices that could be had that doesn't involve pulling away a Dan Mullen type includes:

Hugh Freeze (Ole Miss/Liberty), Gus Malzahn (Auburn/UCF), Billy Napier (Lousiana), Jeff Monken (Army) and Jeremy Chadwell (Coastal Carolina)

People will say - but who can Nebraska hire? There's good names out there that run a solid run base offense that have won conference titles that Nebraska can hire.

Any of the names I listed in this specific post I'd be thrilled with hiring.

IMO, not a good fit. Runs a ton of 4 WR sets with one 1 RB. Isn't a run oriented coach. Recruiting is bad. Not a terrible coach by any means, just not Big Ten weather type of schemes. 16 seasons at Oklahoma State with 1 conference title. Never had a losing season at Oklahoma State after his first season.

I bet he would take the Nebraska job if offered, but I just don't see the fit for what he runs.

Gundy came to my mind too. He's a man, he's 54! I think he was hoping for a call when we hired Riley. Hard to argue with his results in a Power 5 conference. I think your pros and cons are accurate though.

I'm going to add Jason Candle to my list. Head coach at Toledo. Never had a losing season after 5 seasons at Toledo. 41 years old. Runs the football. 1 conference championship.

People will say Jeff Monken will never leave Army. That isn't true since he was in the running for the Miss. State and Missouri jobs.

I think Frost is safe till year end. Although I wouldn't be against chin. He seems to be a natural no nonsense coach. The players seem to like and respect him.

I hope Trev watches film of the head coach he will hire to make sure that the new head coach has his teams playing good, basic fundamentals, play hard, doesn't do dumb ****, has a clear identity with the run game and the rest will take care of itself into bowl seasons.

I'm not asking for much.

Tom Herman should get a look. He was turning it around at Texas last season before the boosters showed him the door. He can recruit Texas and runs an offense that is attractive to skill recruits. I hate to say it but, young skilled people are not longing for the days of four yards and a cloud of dust.
Look, I loved the option game and the power I formation but those days are long gone. I believe Herman can recruit talent and has learned from his Texas days. Time will tell.

But think Whitingham could be like Mack Brown and sell out to win before his career is over. Get him resources and gave an understanding of staff expectations and recruit/transfer philosophy necessary to win

I’m elated that we have our guy (back) at Rutgers in Schiano, but if we didn’t get Schiano I was big on Gus Malzahn.

Let’s be honest, Malzahn was the reason Auburn won the NC in 2010. Gene Chizik was the technical HC, but he didn’t do anything since and was never a head coach again as he’s been out of football since 2016 (coordinator at UNC). Unheard of for a NC-winning coach to never get a HC job again and to be out of football before his 55th birthday.

Malzahn would have had his own NC in 2014 but for the late game heroics of Jameis Winston in his Heismann-winning season, but he handled Winston for the first 3 quarters like no one else could that season.

Malzhan had a 66% winning record in the SEC, and a winning record of 59% in the SEC West facing the likes of Alabama and LSU. He was fired from Auburn despite two 10-win seasons in 8 years because he was “only” 3-5 against both Saban and LSU and 2-5 against Georgia. By comparison, Les Miles went 3-7 against Saban and Ed Orgeron thus far is 1-4, both of whom have NC titles.

Yep!

And really if Saban was not cheating at the level he has been cheating at for the last 10 years, Auburn probably wins that division 3-4 more times.

Now put him as the HC of the only show in town instead of being the team people talk about after they are done talking about Bama...plus his recruiting connections plus the fact that he would bring a staff of bad *** coaches and recruiters...

You could make an argument that he would be the best or second best coach in the Big Ten.

Any good high school coach…..and that is NO joke. There aren’t even basic fundamentals being drilled in these kids heads. No clock management. You see this at times but EVERY SINGLE game? You don’t want to rob a big ten coach from anyone. Do you want to hear “ well, we are Minnesota South” now for the next 5 years? Seriously, I know it won’t happen but someone like the Wilber NE coach could do better……not the same…..BETTER, and that is not an exaggeration by any stretch. This s*** show is the same thing every year. No one is learning anything.

Tom Herman's name was mentioned by others in the thread. He is in the NFL with the Bears right now.

He wasn't a failure at Texas in the Big 12, but with all of that local talent in Texas he was only 22-13 in conference play.

He's better than Frost, but we need to be smart about this hire and find a person that teaches sound, fundamental football that doesn't do the same thing as everyone else.

I don't see Tom as a good hire, IMO.

I decided to add Cris Klieman to the list. Watching highlights, even in those losses last season, they played hard and sound football.

I read several articles on Napier last night and I'd do whatever it took to get him. He seems like a guy that will only take a P5 job if he gets full buy in from the administration.

As much as I hate to say this, the old saying defense wins championships is no longer true. I have to say I am surprised at how Frost has turned out for you guys, I thought he was homerun hire and would have Nebraska competing with tOSU for the conference championship annually.

But imo of Monken, a good coach but he doesn't beat good teams with his system. Malzahn won't let his OC call plays and he can't coach QBs worth a lick. Freeze is an offensive guru and QB developer, if you can get passed his ethical and moral issues he is one of the top coaches anywhere. Chadwell comes with some recruiting baggage, might not be a good option right now with rumors of things Frost did. I know Napier personally, I was one of his HS coaches. Very smart, goal driven, but he has turned down 2 SEC jobs to stay with the Cajuns. I know for a fact part of it was he was not going to have full control of his staff and 1 was a major rebuilding job.

He's a better fit in college, IMO. But we will see how his season starts. I don't have him on the list since he is in the NFL and if that is his dream job as a head football coach, then he isn't going to go back to college that easily.
