Could Lakers have interest in Cal?

Lol!

LeBron’s been chasing Jordan for 19 years but finally lost motivation. Now all he needs is John Calipari to find it again. GTFO.

I think you’re missing the point.

You’re oversimplifying. It’s not about Cal kicking him in the pants or having a stern talking to, lol. It’s a fresh start for them and Calipari going to LA would be big news that could add some life into the team. Bring him in, Davis and Cal together again, a new plan and move some pieces around. Start fresh and yes, Calipari add some of his motivation, mindset, whatever you want to call it into the situation. Sometimes it starts with these kinds of ideas.

The fact is the Lakers have nothing else. Bringing in another coach in the coaches fraternity isn’t going to really change anything. At least this way you create buzz and maybe they work well together. It’s better than what you have going.

You said earlier something about if the coach really doesn’t matter why do they fire them? Well why do they fire them then immediately hire a coach who was just fired for many of same reasons they’re firing theirs? Lol. It’s the NBA man.

I think it would actually be a smart move. At this point for the Lakers bringing Calipari in might ignite a fire back into him because there’s only been one coach who’s won a title at both the NBA and college level. There’s a lot of layers to this that you’re dismissing because you’re oversimplifying the meaning behind why it makes sense, if that makes sense.

This story smells like something Calipari or his agent fed to some internet based sportswriters as a "Oh yeah?" rebuttal to Barnhart's comments about competing and winning championships. We already know Calipari and Barnhart aren't exactly BFF's. Call it a ratcheting up of the cold war between those two.

I know a lot of you guys are hot on Musselman. But, why would you want him over Scott Drew? We've seen that Drew can attract 5 star guys and build a championship team in freakin' Waco, Texas of all places. He has the ability to bring guys in that mesh well as a cohesive unit. And he actually has won a championship, unlike any of the other names being mentioned.
I have to believe he would LOVE to get the UK job!

Either way, something has to give, and soon. Rupp is going to be very empty next year. Fan morale is terrible. The roster is only marginally interesting and we have recruits that haven't even set foot on campus already talking about getting out of Lexington ASAP. The program/brand is starting to suffer.
Scott Drew has been past the sw 16 once in the last decade. 😳

Once? They won a title and we beat them in the EE in 2012 but maybe I’m wrong about that. Nevertheless, the school a coach is at has a lot to do with success. Waco is not known for its basketball prowess. It’s like winning a title at friggin ole miss

He’s one of these trolls infected with Calipari’s poison. Actually - I honestly don’t really think he’s a UK or Cal fan just someone here to stir trouble for some strange reason lol.

As bad as Calipari flat out sucks today you know real UK fans of any kind wouldn’t be okay with all of this but alas Bass and the guy that “works” in the “athletic department” well….

I've been as critical of Cal lately as anybody, but be careful as you might get what you want. Then you'll b realize how misguided you were. If say Cal is gonna retire in 23 or 24 and then maybe we can bring someone in. Who, I don't know.

I’m a little hesitant on Drew, he’s been in Waco for almost twenty years and up until the last two years, he has been average at best. He relies heavily on the transfer portal and not until recently it seems started getting top notch recruits.

What has changed for him to all of a sudden start getting the top tier kids from high school?

Meh, probably another story planted by Cal’s team. Just like 90% of the others were pre “CONtract”.

“Yo Mitchie, Ima need a little bit more money! It’s not easy helping these kids end their generational poverty! They’re not robots you know! They’re someone’s son! If not, I’m going to the Lakers!”

“When you are talking about the Lakers, you are talking about a coaching vacancy, I think it is required you have to mention John Calipari as a possibility,” Deveney detailed on April 2. “Now, I have heard that Calipari would be willing to consider leaving Kentucky, he is a god there for sure and it is a comfortable situation but the college game is getting tougher and tougher and the pro game does have the big money you can kick back and collect and you don’t have to worry about recruiting. Calipari with the Lakers— why not? He would probably have to have some GM say, some personnel say, but if there is a guy who has the reputation to come in and rescue that situation, might be him.”

Lakers doing us a favor. He's a god here alright...

The 2012 tournament was over a decade ago. 😳

So, yea. The only time he has been past the sw16 in the last decade was last year. Are you cool with going past the sw16 once a decade?

Also, in almost 20 years at Baylor, Drew has been to the E8 rd only 3 times. Made it past there only once. He has only made the sw16 5 times. He has never won a big 12 tournament and has only shared the regular season big 12 title 2 times.

Baylor is a P5 school in a solid basketball conference. They are in one of the most talent rich states in the nation and the school has a 2.1 billion dollar endowment. It's a very wealthy state and Baylor has a lot of high dollar boosters and donors. Not to mention, they have recruited quite well post 2008. So, no, it really wouldn't be that difficult to be successful there with a solid coach. Drew just isn't that.

His record is abysmal.

Well, I didn't check their records each year but, from memory I know UK beat them in the Elite Eight in 2012 and Baylor won the championship last year so, that's at least 2 trips to the EE.
Lol, the 2012 tournament was over a decade ago genuis. Try counting! 🤣

He went to the E8 in 2010, 2012 and 2020. Only once did he make it past that. No Big 12 tournament championships. Only 2 regular season championships and they were shared. His only even made the sw16 5 times in 19 years.

Oh the humor, BE careful what you wish for. I remember everyone was so high on Billy Clyde. Yall were geniuses then as you thought. This job is a different animal. Trade Cal for Vogul. Laugh my *** off. Donovan is not coming here. Brad Stevens is not coming here. Kenny Payne definitely not coming here. The list goes on.

This is my personal opinion only, but if I were making the hiring decision for UK’s next MBB coach, here’s my short list, and what percentage I think it would happen…

1. Donovan, 50%
2. Stevens, 70%
3. Musselman, 85%
4. Pearl, 95%
5. Drew, 50%
6. Holtman, 75%

Kenny Payne would fall between Pearl and Drew, but that option is off the table. I honestly believe Cal’s replacement will be from that list. It better be.

I would add Jay Wright and Mark Few. I would have them both in my top 5. Also, Kelvin Sampson would he another name I think should be considered.

The last 2 on your list would be major mistakes.

If he could right our ship and rebuild our program, it would be worth it in my opinion. UNC passed on him.

He may not be too happy with them, much like Tommy Amaker and Duke. He may love UK.

All of our successful coaches came from another school other than Joe B.
Yeah if he did that it would be worth it. Amaker wasn’t mad at DUKE, he was set to be their next coach until K made the ultimate decision, so I would say moving forward he will be against them but he wanted to come back and I imagine stackhouse would do the same.

however anyone who can make Kentucky a basketball program and not a four month d-league, foreign tryout session and win I would be happy with.

I don't think Cal is going to jump to NBA knowing that two bad years there and he will get kicked to the curb. Why go there when he has guaranteed money here? Plus if he got his **** together he could be College Balls new Coach now that K is gone. But thats only if he changes his ways and wins some damn tourney games.

Holtman is an interesting person to think about. I think about the guys who came before like wright and how he wasn’t popular then won a couple of titles and what? 4 final fours? The thing about a guy like Holtman is we don’t really know if he would end up being a home run down the road. He’d never leave we know that.

I agree with you there’s nothing that tells me he should be considered, but I’m not listening to him and his vision for UK either.

To me the best hire is a guy that is going to play a modern offense and recruit at a high level. To be honest, that doesn’t fit Mussleman or Holtman.

Lloyd in Arizona would have to be higher than both of those. He fits the type of guy that could be primed for the future with his type of player and type of system. We’d love the types of guy he’s bringing in.
Didn't Arkansas just sign 3 McD's AA?

Excellent post.

People saying Donovan and Stevens wouldn't come here are discounting the program immensely.

I would put Pearl ahead of Musselman and leave Holtman off...but that is just nitpicking.

he hasn’t proved anything on the college level, get back to me when he actually gets his team in the tournament
OK. Will do, chief. How about Billy Clyde, he has a proven tournament record. Even beat Louisville in NCAA.

Is that the kind of " proven" coach you Cal boys are looking for or just your usual " who ever you mention whose name is not John Calipari, we will shoot it right down."

Some of you are the classic bring me a rock type guys that it doesn't matter what rock is brought to you, it will be the wrong rock, even if that rock is a diamond in the rough.

The reality is you want to keep the rock you have, Cal, and that's OK. Many of us realize that your rock star is really just a lump of coal that is mostly burned out.

Let me go bring you another rock. Be right back.

I don’t think the Lakers will offer Calipari. He might be on their list but I seriously doubt his name is very high on it. Cal went 3-17 in his last NBA season and was fired early in the season. His replacement went 13-17 the rest of the shortened season. I would think the Lakers being the “gold standard “ of professional basketball would stay away from him.

This discussion reminds me of this 2014 article regarding Cal coaching Lebron: https://www.usatoday.com/story/spor...missed-chance-to-coach-lebron-james/12575261/
This quote is from the article: “What's happened is our careers are criss-crossing without crossing," Calipari said. "I'm not in a position where I would leave Kentucky right now. I'm not sure whether this is his last contract, or his next-to-last contract. But I would tell you if I had a chance to, I would absolutely."

I’m the guy that not only thinks it would be difficult to find a can’t miss type coach but also believes that fans will not give them the proper time to turn things around, just my opinion.
I still wanna know why you didn’t respond to what I asked you not very long ago? You know exactly what I’m talking about

I've said many times, if a coach wants to leave, go. Goodbye. If he wanted to go previously then we should have let him. Some say Barnhart had no choice but to give Cal that lifer contract when he used UCLA interest to get a ridiculous contract. If Cal leaves today, we can find a coach. Do I trust Barnhart to do that, no I do not.
