The Fever have apparently released Kyra Lambert after only 5 days of her 7-day contract.
I thought it was interesting that the other day White said she didn't know anything about Lambert: apparently the Fever management didn't see fit to include her in the decision to sign Lambert.

One ref, as you can see, called a JUMP BALL.

The other ref called a technical foul on Sophie, which is the call that stood.

The way Hartley was going after the ball, you'd think she was a leprechaun trying to get her gold back.

Sophie's sister:

From the linked story from On3;

After Cunningham left the game with her injury, her sister blasted the WNBA online, seemingly claiming Hartley intentionally hurt Sophie.

“@WNBA maybe you should focus less on fining players for commenting on your poor officiating & more about hiring officials that are able to call a consistent game and protect your athletes. Pathetic. Praying for you,” she wrote.

Sophie Cunningham’s sister wasn’t the only family member who was frustrated with the injury. Cunningham’s mother took aim at Hartley following Sophie’s misfortune: “Hartley is a disgruntled player having trouble everywhere she goes; she’s plain mean and plays out of control.”

The Fever organization will be at a crossroads at the end of this season. It was a year they hoped to solidify themselves as a title contender by signing complimentary, experienced players around their core 3. For a variety of reasons this didn’t pan out at all and has been somewhat of a disaster. From injuries to coach absences to the Bonner mess and mini-KM family controversy, it’s just been a mess.

They have numerous one year contracts that expire. Sophie is one of them and now will be coming back from a serious injury. Same with Ari. It’s unlikely KM returns without a long term Supermax contract (don’t think the Fever will give her one and not sure she wants to be here anyway). Bostons contract will be up
At the end of next year and she’ll want a supermax contract. Who knows what she’s thinking. And Cc will be returning from an injury after missing most of the season.

All this to say I’m not sure what they do. Throw in the incompetent if not corrupt officiating and league leadership and I don’t see a clear direction on how to proceed. And next year CC herself can begin thinking about her career and whether she needs to begin maneuvering similar to what LeBron did in leaving Cleveland and joining a more complete roster with another true 2-way superstar.

The Fever were kinda cocky preseason. New management, a new head coach, a new logo, "a big 3," and veteran players brought in, in hopes of a championship.

So much for that. Time for a new logo; or better yet, skip the logo.

The WNBA is a $#it show. And if you didn't know that before, well, ....

To no one's surprise, Sophie has a torn MCL and is done for the season. At least it's not an ACL. She should be healed well before next season.

The recovery time for a torn medial collateral ligament (MCL) depends on the severity of the tear and the treatment plan.
  • Grade 1 (mild): Recovery typically takes 1-3 weeks.
  • Grade 2 (moderate): Recovery may take 4-6 weeks.
  • Grade 3 (severe): Recovery can take 6-8 weeks or longer, depending on whether surgery is required.
Factors that can influence recovery time include: Age and overall health, Activity level, Whether surgery is performed, and Adherence to physical therapy and rehabilitation exercises.

It's important to follow your doctor's instructions carefully and attend all physical therapy sessions to ensure the best possible recovery.

The Bonner disaster was 100% on the Fever. Everything else has been beyond their control. CC was hurt before the season even started. She is irreplaceable. Howard has been a significant upgrade from Smith at Power Forward. Sophie would have been a great piece off the bench or even the starting Small Forward. The whole league is injured. You’re rushing everything like she has to win a championship asap. How long to assemble a team for Aja Wilson to win one? Minnesota with the best roster and possibly the best player can’t get over the hump. It’s not easy.

Yeah, it will be interesting to see what they do. I'm still wondering if CC might ultimately not be better going the Lebron route, leaving the Fever, and becoming the star piece to a team that needs her for that final elevation to win a title. Teams like Atlanta and Phoenix come to mind, though both of those organizations have done a fabulous job (especially Atlanta) in elevating themselves with roster construction. Not sure either are good enough to beat the Lynx, but I can see CC joining a team like that where she becomes the missing link but also plays with a more complete roster. She should know next year whether the organization has built the core and foundation it needs with her to compete at the highest level. Now about the officiating and league leadership, well, who knows.

Agree I may be rushing it. Good point. It can take star players time to win a title. But someone like Wilson had to have faith in the organization to stay around. Aces were the best team in the league going into her last year of rookie contract. She saw results.

I just think it will be fascinating to see how the Fever approach the offseason and how they view their roster.

CC won’t be signing a one year contract after yea 4. So she will want an idea on the competency of the organization.

I guess I'm more of an optimist. All of the preseason moves looked like winners based on past performance of players. The Bonner situation was bizarre, but it could be blamed on the fever front office and coaching if promises were made. Otherwise, she is just an immature 37-year old who pouted and forced a trade effing the fever over big time. Caitlin is still the main draw in the W, and I think KM and AB would want to play with her more. I think Cunningham and Hull like being on the fever too. There have to be a few missing pieces that can be acquired in free agency, and then maybe they draft Stuelke to be a rim runner. I also think that perhaps the rest of the league may come around on Caitlin in year 3, given how ratings and interest tanked this season with her out, and they may want to hitch their wagon to the gravy train.

Hopefully she doesn't need surgery & she's back on the court in under 2 months.

I forget how many years the Fever have the rights to CC. IF she wanted out, she'd have to ask for a trade, which would be ugly news, because the Fever obviously would not wanna trade her.

And would she wanna leave Indy/Connor?

Who knows what CC is thinking; this year had been disappointing, to put it mildly (3 season ending injuries, the Bonner fiasco, CC missing over half the season, etc).

It will be interesting to see what the new CBA looks like. Unless I am reading/interpreting things wrong, the Fever, as of now, could hold on to CC for at least 8 total seasons (whether CC likes it or not).

Right now:
a team holds rights to a drafted rookie for a total of 4 years. This is structured as a 3-year contract with a team option for a 4th year.

After 4 years, the player becomes a Restricted Free Agent (RFA), but as you will read, the Fever can hold on to CC for at least a couple more years by matching any other team's offer (keeps CC in Indy for at least a total of 6 seasons). But CC could then be cored for up to 2 times (keeps CC in Indiana for at least a total of 8 seasons).

An RFA is a player with 4 years of service whose contract has expired and who receives a qualifying offer from their previous team.

To provide further context, for a player who is out of contract and has four years of service in the WNBA (coming off their fourth-year team option in a Rookie Scale contract, or otherwise), the team can send a Restricted Qualifying Offer to the player between January 11th to January 20th. If the team decides not to offer a Qualifying Offer (QO), the player will be a Free Agent on February 1st.

If the club declined to offer a Qualifying Offer, the player would become an unrestricted free agent, free to sign with any team starting on February 1st.

Starting on January 21st, RFAs can negotiate an offer sheet with a team other than their last team. However, that player’s prior team has a “Right of First Refusal” (the team can match the offer sheet.) If the team matches the offer sheet, the player signs a contract with the original team on the terms agreed upon with the new club.

(Offer sheets must be for a multi-year contract.)

Core Players:

“Coring a Player” is almost the WNBA’s version of a franchise tag. An organization can, at maximum, core one veteran free agent.

Teams can prevent a player from becoming an unrestricted free agent by designating them as a "core" player. This gives the team exclusive negotiating rights and guarantees a one-year, supermax contract

A WNBA player can be designated as a "core" player a maximum of two times in their career.

A Core Qualifying Offer is a fully guaranteed one-year deal worth the supermax that both UFA and RFA’s are eligible for. A Core Designation contract is a one-year deal on the maximum base salary.

If a player receives a Core Designation, the team that designates them as such is the only team with which a player can sign or negotiate a contract during the free agency period. But the team and player can still negotiate a move elsewhere if both parties desire.

Unrestricted Free Agents (UFA)

A UFA is a player who can negotiate with any team during the free agency period without hindrance. They can negotiate contracts starting on January 21st and, on February 1st, enter into a negotiated agreement.

That’s interesting. If I’m comprehending that, the current structure is extremely restrictive and punitive for the players. Especially if you value control of your career and where you play (and with whom you play). I wonder if that will be bargained in future negotiations.

Otherwise it could get ugly. CC won’t need the money of WNBA contract so she can wield her power accordingly.,
