I enjoyed that article, Thanks for posting it.

Great story. I sometimes forget that Schiano is still only 50 years old.

His expertise on coaching defense has never been a question. Hopefully he's learned enough over the last few years about delegating authority that will serve him well when he gets his next head coaching job.

They did an interview with him about a year and a half ago - it really did sound like he had learned a lot from his experience at RU and TB. I'll have to see if I can dig that up after the Spring Game.

PERCEPTION....
No matter what you perceive as reality in regard to what GS accomplished here.
The PERCEPTION is he was great, made us relevant and did something everyone thought was impossible...resurrect RU football to top 20 status.
Even if it was only one year, he did it, that's what the football world remembers

His one BIG flawed spelled out in article. Way too hands on in everything. When he becomes HC he needs to hire a staff, Trust them, let them do their jobs and grow and he will be a GREAT HC not just a good one. It sounds like he knows what he now has to do but will still be very hard for him to let that part of the coaching game go.

I like Greg, but he was too controlling once the program grew. Even in his youth camp that my two boys attended while they were in elementary school, he played a big part in the camp which I was surprised about.

Very good article. I am sad that we weren't able to get him back last year.
When he left I said this is going to hurt us for years because he was "Rutgers football ." He was the juice and attitude we had and needed as we were building something. The haters can deny it all they want but it's the truth . Without him we have had no identity and everything started going downhill from recruiting to a clean program to the way the media views us.

I like hearing Meyer talk about the value of having another HC on his staff. Good parallel hopefully to having Kill on staff now for Ash.
I also liked how Meyer was very complimentary toward Schiano.. and Schiano of the strength conditioning coach. It is clear the coaches support each other.. and that probably goes down to the players as well.. its that FAMILY thing again. How much better is that compared to the head coach who is afraid his assistant might get too much credit.. insist on a raise or leave....

Yes. I don't begrudge for schiano leaving. He was offered an NFL job. I do begrudge the hiring of flood the dud and said it at the time. Pernetti and dud, with an assist from Julie , all but killed everything schiano built.

Yes.
I was sadder when we hired flood and kept him for four years
Good point on both. But maybe Rutgers would've been able to get a better coach if Schiano left early enough. That was a later departure than usual and RU didn't really have a choice.

Disagree, there were choices. Flood should have been an interim coach for 2012 and then hired a real coach. Kind of like fickell at Ohio state.
At the very least he should have been fired in 2013 as the train wreck was obvious.

If Schiano would be left at a normal time that a football coach usually leaves, Rutgers would've had a hell of a lot more coaches to choose from. Rutgers was actually a good spot for a job at that time. When Schiano left at the last minute in late January of that year, all of the good coaches to hire from were gone, Schiano took all of the better assistants and Rutgers had no choice but to keep Flood.

So let's assume you're correct. It doesn't mean you keep the guy for four seasons!

That happened because in a panic move we hired Flood to keep a class together.

Were you sad when he left at the very last minute and took every legit assistant coach on the staff with him?
New HCs even if they were one of the assistants of the previous HC usually will want their own people and let go some of their co-workers to make room for them.
When those assistants left, they understood whoever Rutgers hired to replace Schiano might not want to keep them and if forced to would replace with their own choices ASAP.
Greg took who he felt comfortable with and they left because , besides a NFL gig with someone they trusted, they couldn't depend on keeping their job at Rutgers.

That last minute leaving was partially because Tampa's owner gave him little time to make a decision once he offered Schiano a job.

What we don't mention often is that 2012 season. If schiano stayed he gets us to that elusive BCS game and conference title. We are probably a top 15 team that season.
That team almost did it anyway despite flood.

Of course. At the very least he should've been fired after that Pinstripe loss vs ND. No chance for a suprising season... which it happened.

Should have been fired or reassigned after that Virginia tech debacle in 2012. Or November 2013. No doubt.

No! No! No! No! No! He couldn't get good/decent coordinators, and, I'll give Franklin credit for doing something GS would never do (could be his biggest stumbling block) - go out and land solid coordinators, and let them do their thing.
