This team has to figure out how to play defense...and to win a game on the road in the ACC. Right now we can't do either. We will get better on defense (we can't get much worse), but how long is it going to take. I still think we'll get it together.

I’m still laughing. Sarcastically... we officially don’t play defense. Anyone who grew up playing basketball realizes that. Just embarrassing.
I totally agree. This team and coach have no desire to play defense. Why in the world are we playing man to man and using basically 6 players. What hell happened to all our depth. Absolutely pathetic.
I think the problem is teaching Freshman to play defense at the level needed to be a Championship team isn't impossible but very very hard. You may get that magic in a blue moon but nine times out of ten you'll end up disappointed regardless of the recruiting rankings. Defense can't be taught by anyone in a few months time.
I know the season is far from over and even the 15 team took some lumps, but man it sucks losing two straight road games in the conference. Our mediocre guard play on top of piss poor defense is going to hurt us even more if they tighten something up. I didn't even seen any fire from Grayson tonight. The 15 team had Quinn, and this team needs that leadership from him

Many times the better team-hot player will beat you. Ya accept and move on.... tonight is one of the losses that simply is bad. No excuses. NCST is bad.... as is Dukes defensive game plan and execution.

I think all is ok, but when I see a guy get a rebound at the end of the game between Carter and Bagley I just can't understand it, they just did not want it and had a chance with 4:00 to go.......
I am just perplexed and feel there is just more going on behind the scenes than we know and it will all shake out sooner than later.

The overplay man to man switching defense doesn’t work against the pick and roll. It just produces wide open shots. K has to adjust a zone doesn’t work.
I agree about the behind the scenes thing. Grayson just didn't seem to be into the game mentally or physically. He showed no fire, passion, or heart. I was wondering if he was sick or something.
What in that game made you feel that all is ok? Yea we can score.. But we can’t hold a decent team under 80 points... I think we can improve, but nothing in that game made me feel comfortable with our team.
Duke won’t get ou of the 1st weekend of the NCAA tournament at this rate.
I said the same thing about Grayson in the game thread, he was just not there tonight which is a dagger when your senior does not take charge.....he is usually the one bringing the team together before free throws and he did not do that tonight, just everything seemed wired to say the least
Not for nothing but I think it’s what seven weeks before March. They better start thinking about how to turn things around “ right now” or they are going to be asking what happened come March.
Well, defense is a strategy for sure but it is also about want to......if they decide to play together I would say we will be ok.
This team can score with anyone, that's why I still like our chances, and both loses are on the road, still good at home and neutral courts.
Giving up 90+ to a mediocre at best NCSU team is not what makes a championship season. Are you kidding me? Jeebus! Our defence has GOT to improve, it can't get worse can it?
This! It is on K and the staff. Stop blaming the players youth. Stop blaming lack of athletic ability (this team proves that’s not the issue). Duke is either not working on it or there is some serious issues on how they teach it or there is a serious strategy issue.
Kick your feet up boys. This team will either find itself and put in the long hours outside of practice and game making the necessary changes or they will be more concerned with their draft stock. There is nothing we can do as fans. We need leadership. We need Grayson to take this team by the horns and say not on my watch, not my last year. I will finish up my bourbon and hope that the work is being done. This team can be great or they can be just like many a duke team of recent memory. Their destiny is in their hands. But more is needed, a whole lot more.
And if freshmen are so hard to teach then stop recruiting all one year players. There’s got to be balance. Seems simple.
So can we agree that GOAT is for lifelong achievement, not for current status? Careers arc - usually 35 - 55 is top performance - and we have a coach way past his peak. The problem with lack of accountability - which GOAT status basically demands - is that there's no way to adjust for things a 70+ year old simply can't adjust to.
If Coach K is basically uncoachable, then we're stuck with this until he decides otherwise. Next year - when we have few if any quality bigs - is going to be the exact same thing, with 2-3 lottery picks looking like chumps because they're forced to play 35+ minutes per game and getting switched on to bigs all game long.

The thing with Grayson is that when he’s not playing well, his body language shows it and he seems to even mentally check out. It’s been that way ever since he was a freshman. He’s already been called out by Coach K for doing it in a game earlier this season. I really hoped that him going into the season as the unquestioned leader of the team would cause a change this season, but I just don’t see it happening.
Wondering which player is going to step up and be the Defensive Stopper for this team (Example: Amile Jefferson, Matt Jones, Justise Winslow, Shelden Williams).

The kid barely gets a break. It’s on the entire team not one player.

Baffled, disappointed, frustrated and angry -all the emotions of being a Duke fan of 25+ years with this and the BC games. Coach K cannot be happy with this, yet we show no improvement. The players are meant to be great 5 star players yet get beaten by players whose names no one knows. My joy and allegiance to Duke BB came from the passion and the committment players showed when they wore the jersey. The past few years have destroyed the Duke mystic as we have been proven to be just a OAD factory that can score but cannot defend. 2015 is proving to the the outlier of seasons vs the expectation. We dont play for each other, for the team or for the reputation of the program. I expect we will get rolled in other away games because there have been no lessons learned from the BC loss.

But seems like to me he’s trying to find motivation from the bench but you got to play them for them to be motivated.
By the way, does this mean Goldwire, Alex, White, Robinson and Big V are all bad in practice. Just asking seeing as how most on here saybgame time is earned in practice. Maybe Tucker didn’t want to be an escape goat for this team not being deep.
Before everyone turns into Guru Gary and tries to decipher why we lost, talk about Coach K is delusional, and our bench is weak...this is State. At PNC. This happens with State. They turn into the 96 Bulls and everything they shoot goes in. They play great on both ends. We know this. Hell it was discussed here just two days ago. It’s not like we lost a non-conference game to Shaw by 50 at Cameron. Relax. Stop being so damn negative. Good grief. Some of you act like the season is over.
Wow....that isnt what I would have expected. I admire Coach K for what he has built, but if this is his thoughts then he is not well equipped to deal with this type of team. We have the players on the bench,we've played a ton of games so this does make zero sense and is a foreboding warning for the rest of the season.
I think Grayson got frustrated early on when Duvall didn't pass to him on the left wing, instead he threw a bullet inside that didn't finish with a score. It looked like there was an issue between him and Trevon.
Never once did I blame the loss on him. It was a true team loss. To hold our senior caption to a higher standard when talking about leadership is not unreasonable though. It’s long been said that Grayson is more of a type to lead by example than vocally. Well he needs to lead by example during difficult situations. If you want to use horse analogies, then what I said came straight from the horse’s mouth.
Amen! I'm not buying the preseason bragging about how deep our team will be until we are playing more than 7 players a few games into conference play. Sick of the "we're not deep excuse"...
