When you say "that's supposed to be focused on UK Athletics", that is simply false. It is our show...it is supposed to be focused on whatever we want it to be...most of the time it is UK Athletics...but sometimes it is movies, our lives, tv shows, the city, the state and yes, occasionally politics. If that isn't for you, then that is totally fine (although your posts are generally among the 20 or so on here that ALWAYS crush me no matter what...so regardless of the topic, I don't think it would matter what I say). I suspect there are some who agree with you and I have heard from them...BUT I have heard from a WHOLE lot of other folks who disagree.

Here is what diehard fans sometimes don't realize...as many of us as there are...there aren't enough to support the kind of show I want to do. To do what we do, which is beat ALL sports shows, every type of music and every station in the state in the ratings, it CANNOT just be sports. There simply aren't enough diehards to do it. Take this thread...235 posts right now with multiple people (me included) clicking on here multiple times to see the latest. Total number of clicks of the thread? 8,000....or about a quarter of the number of listeners we have listening on any given hour just in the city of Lexington. The reasons our ratings are good is because we get the casual fan who doesn't tune in "just to be focused on UK Athletics." That is by design

I know that decisions causes us to lose some people...I get it. All decisions do. But it causes us, on the whole to get more people than we lose. Most of those people don't post on message boards. I hear over and over that "one of these days this is going to cost you"...I heard that beginning in 2008 and still hear it today. Maybe one day it will cost us...or maybe something else will. Nothing lasts forever. However our formula of not "sticking to sports" is also a big reason we are in a position to be here to begin with

I really don't mean this to be rude, but most people aren't going to tune into hear your thoughts on movies, or television shows, or the KYGA, or if Ryan's wife is mad at him, or whatever blatantly uninteresting things you all try to discuss outside of Kentucky athletics. The reason people care about the Yum center deal is because it's related to sports, not because of it's political significance. I understand why you do it but you seem to have forgotten who your core audience is. "Not sticking to sports" isn't why you're in the place you are now. Honestly, I'm kind of astounded you would think that. Your unique style of entertainment related to Kentucky athletics is what got you here. If you lose that audience, you're finished.

But whatever, you're a progressive (and much more progressive than you let on to your audience). Progressives, out of some misguided sense of duty and intellectual superiority, can't keep their politics out of their professional lives no matter what.

Hate to interject but love Matt's show or hate it, you're clearly wrong here haha. It's the #1 show in the state and they've been doing basically the things you've said won't work for quite some time. Also this post sort of reflects the generalization Matt made.

You aren't being rude...but you are incorrect. Again that might not be why YOU tune in, but the numbers suggest otherwise. The day we did the movie bracket was our most listened day since the week after the NCAA Tournament....last summer our Restaurant bracket was the 2nd most listened to day of the Summer. Our two most streamed overall weeks last summer...the two political conventions.

Numbers don't lie. Our most listened to shows are during March (obviously basketball) and the Friday before a big football game....besides those, it is the goofy, random stuff. It is how you fill up the rest of the year and thats why we do it. I may be Progressive, but I ain't stupid. I go with what works...and it does

Except I didnt say that...I said the folks who constantly criticize me on here non-stop are "old idiots." And I stand by that...those that blast me consistently aren't exactly the ones that I feel need to have their feelings not hurt in response. Since I don't believe you are one of those, I wasn't putting you in the group.

Quite a long set of comments. Appreciate those of you who have said positive things. Had a great crowd today in Bardstown, including a couple of folks who said they post here.

False. Maybe that's what you meant, but it's not what you said.

Fair enough. It honestly astounds me that people would actually spend time of their day to listen to you and Ryan Lemond talk about movies but if that's what works, then go for it. For me personally, the show has lost whatever it was that originally attracted me to it, but I suspect I'm in the minority. Also, I do understand you need filler during dead times like we're in now.

I do know quite a few people that have told me they instantly change the channel when you get into politics but again, maybe that's not widespread.

Ultimately, I'm sure you're a good person. However, your blatant stealing of information in the past and your growing insistence on pushing progressive politics, something I find destructive, has turned me off. I suspect I'm not alone but I'm obviously in the minority and that's fine.

Matt, I don't understand how you can deny you said the following:

..."Most of the people (on Rupp Rafters/Wildcat Lair) seemingly hate me...Some of the times they are idiots. Most of the time they are idiots...It entertains me because of how old and angry people are on there."

If "most" of the people on this board hate you and most of the time they are "old idiots" who entertain you, how do these statements limit the target of your rant to less than even 50% of the posters on this board? Maybe that is what you wanted to say, but that is not what you said.

Notwithstanding your unambiguous statements, I am still bewildered as to why you believe it is entirely appropriate for you spew forth age based slurs in describing the posters on this board that you say hate you. Would you make a racial slur if all of these posters were African American, or a sexist slur if all of these posters were women, or a religious slur if all of these posters were Muslim or a disabled slur if all of these posters were disabled? I think probably not but would you?

As you well know as an attorney and as a future public office seeker, these "old people" have been determined to be a suspect class of citizens, in need of the same special legal protections from invidious discrimination as non white citizens, women, people of different religious faiths and citizens who are disabled . Age discrimination has often been generated from people who have the same attitude you appear to have, to wit: "old people" are less competent, less productive, less intelligent and less worthy than "non older people".

There is certainly no denying that you have repeatedly chosen to use the word, "old people" to perjoratively describe the posters on this board you deem to hate you and who are also "idiots" If this is how you feel about old people so be it. It is what it is. I am simply surprised that someone who holds himself out to embrace liberal to progressive political views would harbor this kind of animus towards older citizens who simply have expressed an opinion about you with which you disagree.

Finally, I would proceed with caution with your historic use and characterization of the "old people" who may work for you now or in the future. Referring to older people in such a manner may cause you to get sued and pay damages.

I say this with respect...if the fact that a person who runs a website (or radio show) has personal political opinions different than yours means you cant support them, then I don't know how you cheer for UK, which has coaches and players whose opinions are of a similar ilk. If you go through life believing that you will only interact with or "support" those with whom you agree you will either (a) wall yourself off to at least half of the country or (b) be naive as to just how many people disagree with you that you don't even know

As for the second point that there are a "helluva lot of people just like you"...that may be correct. But our site traffic has been consistent for the past 5 years and when I don't "stick to sports" our radio ratings actually go up. There is increased political polarization and those who (like you) seem unable to hear any view that isn't there own...but I think a response to that has been the increase of people who like civility and diversity of opinion...and don't take themselves and their opinions so seriously. That latter group is probably the basis for our audiences

You miss the point completely. It has nothing to do with someone simply "having a political opinion". It has to do with that opinion being injected into the website, therefore inflicted on the website viewers. Very much like mainstream media. No one minds that people in the media have political opinions or affiliations, people get upset about it being imposed on them.....see CNN or MSNBC.

Now you are correct in that Coach Cal's political beliefs are different than my own, however, he rarely, if ever, imposes those beliefs on the fans. He remains pretty neutral because he understands that fans have differing views. Bruce Springsteen, on the other hand, has no problem with making his political views known and he's not worried about how it impacts his job.

Let's get something straight here, since my post went over your head. It's not someone simply having an opinion different than my own that is bothersome. It's someone injecting that opinion into the website that I have a problem with. Why do that? What's the point? Just stay neutral and stick to sports. I don't have to watch CNN, I don't have to buy the Boss's albums, and I don't have to listen to your show. Have any political opinion you want, just don't force it on me. I don't like it, therefore I don't frequent site or listen to the show.

Linda Cohn recently discussed how the injection of "politics" at ESPN played a role in their recent troubles. It's real. People don't care that you have an opinion, they just don't want it rammed down their throats.

If I want to hear someone's political views I'll actively seek them out. I don't want to hear them when I'm trying to listen to a show that's supposed to be focused on UK athletics. It's obvious you are using your show to set up a future political career. If you want to do that, fine, but you will turn people off eventually.

As for your really bad comparison to cheering for UK athletics... I have no problem that Cal or any other staffer is a democrat. They are entitled to their views. That's what makes America special. However, that doesn't mean I want to hear his input on right to work laws during his weekly radio show. I watch and follow UK to get away from crap like politics.

I was close to co-hosting that show (I believe that). I was an early caller with good substance and still call from time to time, post game usually now.

Matt's work with Ryan (creating a workable persona out of him), as well as Shannon has been remarkable. He's more progressive and liberal than I am, but who cares? He has a good show and the approach is great.

Fwiw...I would have killed it and been hated by one half, and defended by the other.

Hope this thread finds everyone in a chipper mood. I wanted to take a second and write after my comments today about this Board on my radio show. I have always had a terrific love/hate relationship with this message board forum, going back to when it was originally Kentucky Sports Report before the merger (what year was that?). There is zero doubt that without this board and my "Magloire52" days, I would still be a lawyer and having a miserable time with my existence. The message board communities, especially of the old days, were the centerpiece of my UK Fandom and were the original basis for everything UK sports related on the Internet. Those days, ranging from the big online recruitments (Darius Rice anyone?) to the message board feuds were some of my favorite times in the UK online world and I do miss them...which is probably why I still post here from time to time.

Today I said on the radio a few things that I do believe...some positive and some negative. I said this is undoubtedly the biggest UK message board community on the internet. There was a time when there were many such places but that time has passed and honestly this is the last relevant one that exists. I often say that there are really only three sources of relevant UK information...KSR, Cats Illustrated and Twitter. The mainstream media sources can all be found via Twitter and if you read those three places, you know all there is to know. With that said, I do think message boards such as this on average draw an older crowd. While there are some younger people here, an entire generation has grown up having their UK discussions on Twitter and other social media. Some still find their way here, but most of the posters on here (I bet) are 35-40 and over. There are undoubtedly lurkers of all ages, and those that get news from here, but posting on message boards is what most of us do when we are bored at work (as I am now). This is the largest message board community of UK and its not close. But as those of around in the old days can say, message boards as a whole aren't what they once were in terms of traffic. More options now exist, from blogs to social media, that didn't before. The fact that this place has as many people as it does (when message boards of ALL Schools have seen significant drops) is a testament to its success.

My complaint today about "old idiots" on this message board was aimed at a small, but loud segment of folks here...the ones that bash me every single time my name is mentioned. They of course have a right to their opinion but I am constantly amused by the "I DONT LISTEN TO HIM but he is an idiot, blah, blah blah" threads that follow ever time my Beetlejuice is said in the crowd. It is usually followed by how I am liberal (somewhat true, although less than you think), single (true but happily), gay (not true), arrogant (true of most people who believe anyone would care about their opinion about anything), a jerk (hopefully not true, but I do get riled up from time to time) or a dork (undoubtedly true). Those folks bash me all the time but then get royally offended if I say anything about them, usually becoming quite angry in response. I do think those folks are often (or always) "old idiots" who care less about debating a particular point, rather than blasting me personally. Their act amuses me greatly and I have no problem mocking them in return. I only wish that when, as happened today, they begin their outrage, they would at least quote me correctly and in context.

But the VAST majority of the folks on here seem like good people. I read this site almost every day and pick up something from it every time. People like to accuse me or KSR of "stealing information" but that is honestly silly. We all hear the same information and whether people say it or not, we all have sources even if we don't share them. What I do use this forum for is to get a pulse of the fan base....specifically the hardcore, long-time fans who are engaged significantly in the details of the programs and who lean towards the negative side. I think that is a fair description of most (but not all) of the posters here. I use Twitter for the 20-35 year old fan, Snapchat for the 25 and under, Facebook for the 40 and over, my radio show for the broad fan base, the TV show for the Lexington/Lou fan, etc. I have been a part of doing demographic studies of every form of UK media (it was a big investment a couple years back and the resulting numbers have helped fuel how I approach all of my work) and they follow patterns that are fascinating. Each represents a slice of the overall pie. This board is the best to figure out what the hardcore group intimately engaged in every story is thinking. And I use it as such.

Long story short, this is the best place to find out what a segment of the fan base is thinking. That is crucial for my job...I enjoy reading this site and think the folks that run it (Rowland, TJ, etc) do a really good job. The anger and hatred of a few (along with my schedule) make me post less than I used to, but it is part of my daily preparation routine. The fact that there exists a small group of "old idiots" who believe I am the epitome of all thats wrong with the world amuses me, but won't stop my visits.
Well Matt you nailed me with your comment. Now I don't hate because well it does me no good. I'm way to upbeat of a person and get way too excited to be negative. However I am old and sir I don't like it one bit. I guess there are things we will never change and getting old is one of them. You do good work Matty boy "yeah I listen" keep it up. Two things made my basketball fandom a lot more fun. First was Calipari named head coach of Ky. and your radio show. Thanks

This entire statement is me key problem with most of the Matt Jones haters. Here's the deal, when you say "stick to sports", he gets it. Sure, there are people that don't like hearing about politics. (Although, it's moreso that people in this state don't like hearing anything they disagree with like democrats). But he hears you and I doubt he cares much that you say that. But then people take off and start saying he's an idiot, a "libtard" (which is incredibly stupid) or any other insults. They say he doesn't know what he's talking about, so on and so forth.

But here's the deal, YOU DONT PAY HIM TO DO A RADIO SHOW! You can't just tell people what to talk about because you don't like it, WHEN ITS FREE!!! That's not how the world works!!!! If you don't like it, DONT LISTEN!

If someone was giving away free strawberry cupcakes, and you don't like strawberry cupcakes, YOU DONT HAVE TO EAT ONE!!!!! It would be the same if you yelled at the free cupcake lady, told her she was an idiot and a cupcaketard because you don't like strawberrry!!!!!! It really is the same. The radio show is free. Stop torturing yourself if you're so upset over what he says and stop listening. And if you think his sources suck, don't listen to that either. If you think his site sucks, don't get on his site! Nobody owes any of you a *^ thing! Nobody forces you to listen!

It's really that simple. There are tv shows all over tv that I don't care for. You think I'm wasting my energy yelling at the producers, writers and actors because I don't like it? No!! I'd be an insane maniac if I did that and expected a result in my favor. It's so stupid.

Then people say something positive about ksr and idiots say the ol "why dontcha kiss his arse a little more". Grow up. You're basically saying "either insult him and hate him or you're stupid too" which had an effect when I was, I don't know, 8 years old?

Hate to tell you, but ksr is more than "a blog". It's a good show. It's a good website and frankly, Matt says things I'm sure he regrets, but who in the hell has taken Louisville to task like he has? Who? Who has called out forde, and any other idiot like he has? Thamel? Who? So yeah, it's more than a niche. He gets more out of what he does than any other publication and it's not close. He asks questions no one else has the nerve to ask because they're so afraid they'll lose a perk or favor for questioning authority. Yet he'll ask people things and say things regardless of what someone may think of him afterwards. That's respectable, regardless of if you agree with what he said or not.

So yeah, maybe if you think he's sooooo wrong for his post, check out the idiotic statements people have made up and down the page. He proved his point by some of your responses but some of you all are too ignorant to even notice.

This is part of it. Matt says he thinks the criticism is funny but it clearly bothers him or he wouldn't respond. Nobody likes to be criticized or disliked. Think Matt does blow off the goofey ones who are clearly over the top with their dislike but the other general feeling out there that he rubs a lot of people the wrong way does bother him like it would anybody and that's part of why he tunes in and reacts.

But Matt could go a long way in improving that by just not being so know it all in his approach. He is very smart and intuitive and is right in his perception of a lot of things, and not so much on some others, but what a lot of smart people like him fail to realize is people don't always care about how much you know and whether you're right all the time as much as they do how you treat people and how you come off. Modesty goes a long way especially in this state. I think deep down Matt is a good guy and real fan and like he said is more conservative on some things that you think, but just has that "I can't stand when someone seems ignorant or wrong about something and have to correct them now" impulse that gets him in trouble. That's okay when people you are dealing with are truly ignorant and obnoxious about it and need set straight. But not everybody is calling or writing to make a legal point and don't use precise language and aren't even trying to debate all the details of an issue. They are just trying to make a general point or share their thoughts. Most people understand that and take them for what they are, just a well intentioned person trying to chime in as imperfect as they may go about it. Matt has an impulse to want to correct everything anybody says and make sure he's set the ignorant straight and that just gets old.

The irony is you would think Matt would know this too! I think he actually does and just cant help himself and believes he wishes he were a little more patient or understanding of his audience, but its his impulse and something he has to fight. I think he want's to be more liked overall and that will have to be corrected to accomplish that.

Just my two cents worth.

Very insightful. Contrary to what some think, because I have been defending him, Matt frequently gets on my nerves. I especially hate the way he cuts people off and interrupts all the time. I know he thinks he has to keep the show going and who am I to criticize the way he does things, since he's pretty successful, but I think he could be just as successful if he didn't do those things. And I suspect that rather than it being because he wants to keep things moving, it's probably what you said more than anything.

I've never seen so many freaking cry babies. If you don't like the show, then don't listen. "We don't hear Cal talk about his political views..." Well yeah, thats because he's an employee of the University of Kentucky and he has to be careful about what he says. MJ says what he wants for the most part because it's his show. Do I like and agree with all of his political views? No. But just like the rest of you, nobody is making me listen to the show. And Kampus Korner (dont know how to tag?), get over yourself man. You're offended by the "old idiots" comment because you choose to be offended. People take shots at me and my business on a weekly basis. Guess who doesn't get offended? Because I don't give a crap about people opinions of me.

Passive way of saying "see, my comments didn't impact the following I have from Catsillustrated members".

You're not fooling anyone. You said something stupid, you realized it could impact your ratings. You thought about it, decided to come on here to explain yourself. You're pride wouldn't let you come out and apologize to anyone you might have offended, but your post made you feel like you did. Your ultimate goal was to explain yourself without apologizing and have people like JedWar say, "it's ok buddy". You accomplished that, but many of us see right through it.

I can assure you that this site is where I get all of my information. Your site is terrific, but it doesn't go over our heads that it's entirely out of political agenda when Ms. Tyler Thompson posts the video from Jimmy Kimmel discussing his child's heart problem. It plays right into ObamaCare and the agenda of the left. You don't think people know when someone is passively trying to push their agenda? Or how about when she posted on the morning after the election a video of the national anthem being performed "for anyone who needs cheering up". You think that goes right over our heads?

I used to listen to your show everyday. Loved it. But I don't anymore. And it's not because I think you push a liberal agenda via the show. I actually haven't heard you do it on the radio. It's because Tyler Thompson, and your website does. Being 100% honest. I loved your show. But I won't support it anymore because I don't want to support those opinions. Bruce Springsteen is my all time favorite musician. Haven't bought an album by him in years. Same thing. You might think, "big deal one person doesn't go to the site because they disagree with our views." Well I have news for you, there are a helluva lot of people just like me. It will catch up one day. Good day.

Just to touch on the part of your post about musician's political views, I really don't get that. The overwhelming majority of musicians, actors, and entertainers in general are liberal. I would have to cut probably 90% of my music collection if I did that. I get it if the person is overly in your face about politics. It can put you off them altogether, but I don't think too many of them do that.

Has to be careful? What? University employees promote their political views 24/7. Where have you been?

I hope you don't think Cal wouldn't get blasted for stating his political views. He's obviously held to a different standard than other university employees because he in the public spotlight.

Hate to interject but love Matt's show or hate it, you're clearly wrong here haha. It's the #1 show in the state and they've been doing basically the things you've said won't work for quite some time. Also this post sort of reflects the generalization Matt made.

The number one show in the state? Haha. Yeah? Lods of competition in this state? This is like saying you're the fastest guy in your subdivision.

You arrogant tool. It's not that you have a different opinion. It's that you constantly inject it into everything and use a platform where people don't want to hear you political rants. They only care about basketball. . STHU.

You think Calipari is constantly lecturing us about his political and social issues commentary?

Let's be honest here. If he was a republican, most of the people complaining wouldn't say a word. We all know there's some truth in that. Secondly, I listen to his show as a registered republican and have never felt like he has lectured me or anyone else. He gives his opinion but I have close friends far worse than him. And you know what else, you know who shoves political crap down your throat? Rush Limbaugh. Do I listen, OR complain? NO! Because why would I!?!?!

I know it shouldn't surprise me, but I am nonetheless amused at the number of people who claim to not listen to Matt's show, but also want to give him input on how to make the programming better.

The people who can't tolerate his political opinions are just bizarre. I disagree with probably 97% of his political opinions, and his restaurant and movie tastes. So, you know what I do? Nothing. Because Matt's opinion has no impact on me. I do think it would be an epic mistake for him to run for office (because then his opinion does have an impact on Kentuckians), but if he just some radio show entertainer, then he can talk about whatever he wants to. As long as he does it in an entertaining fashion he will keep his listeners.

Cal is clearly a Democrat. He's not an alt-left nut like Jones though. We all know Cal is a Dem. We don't care. But if he started preaching to us and talking down to us and virtue signaling constantly like most professors and social commentators do then yeah, he'd get blasted.

So again, it's not about having different opinions. It's about the need to promote your ideology all the time and in the wrong venue to do it. You think any of us would want to go to a bar or a game and be lectured about Christianity or who you voted for or how awesome trans bathrooms and socialism is?

My point is that they're in two totally different positions. It's stupid to compare the two situations like a few have. Cal is a public figure and has to be careful with what he says. Remember when he said after the draft during his first year here it was the greatest night in Kentucky basketball history? And do you remember how many people got pissed off at that? People get even more tore up about politics. A lot of the fan base would be calling for his head if he expressed his opinions on politics. "Focus on coaching and recruiting!! Blah blah blah..." And you know why? Because thats what he was hired to do.

As for your analogy you used...if somebody starts lecturing you on that stuff, get up and move. Same goes for listening to the radio and hearing something you dont like. Turn the channel.

Some of ya'll are entirely too thin skinned. I listen to KSR when I get the chance, and have even listened to the podcast. I have been on UK boards since I found Rainman's (dudes name is Steve but cant remember his last name) board so many years ago. And there has always been diagreements and arguments, its just life. But not once have I ever been offended by a comment on a board or on the radio because they really matter very little. Matt does a good job providing an entertaining UK themed show that isnt always about sports. But I dont know Matt, or most of the people who frequent these boards, so their opinions of me are insignificant to my existence. Lifes too short to get worked up over things like that. In the words of Rodney King, "cant we all just get along?" Go Cats!

Haha. Yeah, cause a guy running his mouth on a podcast requires the type of skill and talent of a major D1 coach.

Delusional.
It may not take the same type of talent but it takes talent. Trying to give advice to Matt about how to run one of the most successful college sports-based radio shows/podcasts is just like giving Cal advice on recruiting or giving Jeff Gordon tips on driving.

Matt, I honestly have never heard your show nor visited your website. I also agree that even though I Was just having fun in the other thread whenI said I took your lunch money that was a smart *** and inappropriate comment and I apologize for it. I do still feel that your OP and subsequent messages were condescending, arrogant and insulting to a portion of this board. There are many positive and knowledgeable fans plus a few irrational fans and fly by trollers. We actively post here, engage in discussion, sometimes heated and passionate, but at the end of the day most of us realize we are diehard fans of U.K. And bleed blue.

You publically judge us but do not hesitate to use information from this site. You apparently don't consider yourself a member but feel you know us enough to us childish term like "old idiots" to describe "most" of us.

If you think you are any better a person than those "old idiots" then take a goo d look in the mirror because the past couple of days you have not come across any less idiotic accept for the fact you are slightly bettered versed. Your show is your private kingdom....stay there.

I go with what works...and it does
How are you calculating your numbers? You can make the numbers look anyway you want them to look depending on how you want them to look. The democrats and main stream media have been a good example of that lately.
