That regardless of the weather thing won’t ever happen. The family and I were planning on going up but there’s no way we’re driving three-ish hours to spend 3+ hours in the rain.

I personally won’t head up unless I know that the weather will be solid the entire time. I can’t be the only one in that same mode, I’m gonna guess that that was probably the main reason for at least 20,000 people.
I am on your side.
For a practice, i chose NOT to drive3 hrs to wallow in the rain

My point is, I’d like to see them do something that WOULD draw that many people. Clearly, watching a practice in the rain is not very compelling.

But if they created a new event that they can host in April that would draw people, that would be valuable. Look at the NFL and the draft. A once boring event is drawing 500,000 people during off season. That’s all I’m saying. Figure out some that that would keep the energy up in April. Everyone wins.

I partially blame Franklin because he got rid of the game aspect of Blue White. They used to have a lot of other things going on around the stadium and things for kids to do. I remember bringing my kids up to Blue White, I am thinking early 2000s. Parking was free, Game was free, and they had some mascot type characters walking around the stadium. Also, they used to have players sitting around signing autographs. They seemed to have taken all the fun and enjoyment out of the weekend and turn it into a money grab which is now the PSU way. Along with the local hotels price gouging every weekend they can(recently, the new hotels that just opened up in Bellefonte were already price gouging for some kid wrestling tournament held in the BJC, even the one down in Milroy was $300+/per room. Currently $475+ for graduation weekend, in fecking Milroy/Reedsville!!)

I hope you're right. It just seems like programs are failing to realize it’s a missed opportunity for fan development and engagement. I’d like to see them do something unique that would be enough to draw 65-70k fans again, regardless of weather.
The bad weather squashed any hope of a decent attendance. Can't have an open to public Beaver Stadium practice in the fall because the offense & defense are installed and they need those private team reps without worring about the wrong eyes watching. Perhaps a fan open house at the Beav on team photo day during fall camp with autographs from current & Lettermen, and a pep rally (Blue band, cheerleaders, lionettes, quick speeches by a few coaches and players/lettermen)? I think that would draw interest from students, locals, and fans within a close driving distance. Have food trucks outside the Beav.

From what I could gather from those that attended - the RBs looked especially good, Peoples + Martin. The OL got a good push in the run game as well. Not much to report on QBs besides they were young.

I could definitely see this offense completely committing to the run next season. On paper, the OL looks like it could be a strength. And with depth/talent at RB, let's make this our identity.

Campbell is the coach now and could have made it a game, no?

There is a block party 9a-1p with live music, food trucks, etc. That used to include carnival rides, but not sure if that’s still the case.

They hold a “kids combine” Friday night in Holuba.

Game admission and parking is free.

Yes, hotel prices are outrageous.

I suppose Campbell could have but if it was still a game during Franklin's tenure then the status quo would have been kept as a game I would think. Then again it may have not been Franklin's decision to make it practice. Who knows what went into making the change to just a practice instead of a game situation kind of thing.

Also, Parking hasn't been free for a few years:

Football parking areas near West Shore Home Field at Beaver Stadium (between Bigler Road and Mount Nittany Medical Center) are managed by Penn State Intercollegiate Athletics and require a football permit. Lots will open at 8 a.m. For more information, visit gopsusports.com, call 1-800-NITTANY, or email [email protected].

Additional on-campus parking for the Blue-White Practice will be available through Penn State Transportation Services at the following locations:

East, HUB, and Nittany decks:

  • $20 event rate for two or more hours of parking ($2 for first hour, $1 for second hour)
  • Payable by credit card before exiting at pay-on-foot stations
Eisenhower Deck:

  • $20
  • Payable through HONK (zone PSUYF)
Orange A Katz Lot:

  • $20
  • Payable by credit card at pay-on-foot stations or through HONK (zone PSUOA)
Tailgating is strictly prohibited at campus parking decks and the Orange A Katz Lot.

Pretty sure the carnival has gone away(maybe because of the construction). Not sure about the kids combine. Agree that it has been a combination of things that took the luster out of the weekend.

Yes, there's price gouging at the B&W game. If you haven't gone for Octoberfest, the same thing. At a collection of small cabins they wanted a 3 night stay at $200 a night.

Back to the original idea/post regarding 60+K, when has the BW game had over 60K? I can think of only 2 or 3 that had that many and each time it was because the weather was 70+ and sunny. Went a few years back and it was upper 50's I think and nice out but we didnt approach 60K. Add in the prices for parking, and they arent going to see that number ever again unless the weather is great and this team is coming off a playoff/championship

No Announced Attendance

This was the second straight year that Penn State did not announce the total fan attendance for the Blue-White Game. In 2023, the total attendance was around the 63,000 mark, with prior years eclipsing 60,000.
This year, although it wasn’t announced in Beaver Stadium, the total was more than 60,000 fans according to Penn State’s website. There were plenty of fans outside the stadium, though, as it was the first (or last) opportunity of the year to tailgate a Penn State football game.

Wrong eyes watching? That kind of stuff never happens.

Tengwell said Malachi Goodman has all the tools but his hindrances right now are no PT last season and two different types of coaching/technique between Trauitwein (former OL coach) and new OL coach Clanton. Despite that he says Goodman will be starting LT and should grow into the position.

I failed to mention the Octoberfest gouging was way back in 1991.
When I first moved to SC back in 2005. I would notice the gas stations would raise their prices on the big event weekends, especially football games. One old timer life long SC resident used the words "captive audience needs gas to get back home so they have no choice" - however, there were not as many gas stations around town back then that there are now so the gas station gouging seems to have faded...or I haven't been paying as close attention lately.

I guess if you count everyone outside they probably have more than 2 or 3 but even so, it has to be warm,

Even though this was just a scrimmage with some pregame festivities missing, did they have the cocktagons out?

I stand corrected on the parking, thank you. That’s lame.

Back to format, I can’t imagine someone overruling the HC and think it’s safe to say Campbell prefers a practice to a game.
