Who do you think is more capable ??? Greg knows NJ, knows Rutgers, has had success here and elsewhere, and most importantly … has never competed with the rest of the Big 10 on a level playing field. Now that the playing field is finally getting closer to even thru the support of administration, the fanbase wants to jump him immediately?? Yes UMass was a bad loss but the guy has earned the chance to right the ship

He’s tearing down any good will he had. Three things can be true. If we lose a few Schiano fans after he goes, so be it. They aren’t here for the right thing anyway. Bring on a new staff!
Imagine the amount of fans Rutgers would gain if they put a good product on the field. They would greatly outnumber those willing to abandon Rutgers. because a coach is canned.
Serious question. Is this Al under a different handle?
Can't be. He isnt demanding a fieldhouse and isnt asking everyone to donate $20,000....yet.

I may be in the minority on this …. But I feel like there are a lot of people in my camp who are feeling the same thing but not going to speak up on it …. If Schiano goes, I go too.

I’m 35 years old and grew up on Rutgers football with Greg Schiano. My family and I have had season tix and tailgate just about every game since 2004. Live it, eat it, breathe it. Today we brought my 5 month old daughter to her first Rutgers Football game, and it brought back memories to when I was a kid watching Schiano take on the Miami Hurricanes

We won a grand total of 3 games in the 2 years prior to Schiano’s return, and we went winless in the Big 10 2 years in a row…. We were losing recruits to Temple ….. Easy to forget just how bad things were when he took over in 2020…. My Rutgers football fandom was really waning until his return.

Progress is never linear like people want it to be but since he’s been back we’ve been trending up. Greg’s had to deal with pathetic leadership above him (Hobbs), severe lack of resources, and is only just finally getting real leadership from above.

UMass was a bad loss. UMass played lights out but no excuse to lose that game. BC is a game we should have won on paper but our QB play was really bad and have to give credit to their QB who made plays. Super easy for recency bias to say “hey we suck fire the coach” but to me it’s a truly weak take.

We need to get better. QB play has been well below where it needs to be, and our defense showed some flashes today but needs to be way more consistent.

Give Schiano another year in the portal with continuity of staff, real NIL backing, and alignment from above, and let’s see what he can do.

The anti-Schiano mob has been coming for Greg for years and just been waiting for the right opportunity to pounce. It feels like we’re nearing a tipping point…. And I hate to say it but if Greg goes, I go too. I stand with Greg
See ya. If you love Gary so much why don't you marry him.

Well Greg is a National champ coordinator, that’s the point. I don’t think we’re finding another coach who’s had first hand experience recruiting/coaching with Urban Meyer, and scheming up defenses with Bill Belichick…..

To be over .500 in Big 10 you have to beat 5 of these 9…..
USC, Indiana, Maryland, Northwestern, Michigan, Wisconsin, Nebraska, Penn State, Michigan State….

So let’s say we play go a perfect 4-for-4 and beat Maryland, Northwestern, Nebraska, Michigan State….no hiccups.

After going perfect against them, now you still have to pick off one of USC, Indiana, Michigan, Wisconsin, Penn State…. a reasonable goal to have… but given where our program was just a short time ago… also reasonable that it hasn’t happened yet
Jim Knowles won a NC as DC at OSU. He also has a losing record as a HC at Cornell. You want to hire him?

Ok I was following your train of thought until you said Zinn gave greg every chance this year, when we’re only 3 games into the season… Yes UMass was a bad loss. BC we had our backup first time qb in and he just didn’t have it. We’re 0-1 in conference play and that only loss is to USC who was supposed to blow our doors off and we lost by 7, with multiple chances to win the game if our qb played competently. Give the guy a fair shake at competing with NIL, if he still doesn’t cut it move on… but you have to give him a fair shake at it
All he had to do was beat the team you paid half their NIL budget to just to come here and lose. He didn’t. Then he didn’t beat one of the p4 teams we have more NIL than. Stop with the backup QB excuse, kids been in the system for how long? And he started because Lonergan played that bad. Who’s to say AJ was even the backup. Chances blown.

WTF, one decent showing and now some don't want him gone. It is time for Rutgers to move on. He is not the guy to get Rutgers football were it needs to be. Unless you are satisfied with 4-6 win seasons, with most of them wins coming against bums. It's loser attitude wanting him to stay.

He gave a bag to get Lonergan. That was his choice. Did BCU a favor and they still beat him with a D2 transfer. He’s not cut out for this world. He can no longer evaluate talent and he certainly can’t assign resource allocation to it.

A new staff will be able to hopefully be better. Schiano is losing to teams he has he has far more resources than. Just doesn’t have the goods. If you and a few fans are that into him that you leave the program, adios. You were here for all the wrong reasons to start.

You think bringing in Lonergan is the problem??? Come on dude - your smarter than that. Lonergan is no great shakes but he’s more than just “a little” better than AJ. He was not accurate yesterday because he was struggling to grip the football. Did you not hear it announced that he was receiving treatment for the issue the whole game?

Don’t give me some damn conspiracy theory that Greg is playing him because he paid him and doesn’t want it to seem like AJ is just as good. Greg is coaching for his life so if AJ gave us a better chance than Lonergan with a bum hand, he would’ve been out there. Full stop. We needed to bring in a QB. Greg knew it and Duff wasn’t staying if we didn’t. If we brought in a “guarantee” replacement, AJ might’ve left. So it was a fine line.

This wasn’t where we went wrong. OL looked better yesterday but what it was vs UMass is inexcusable. No QB is going to have a good game when a team only rushes for 30 net yards. Waiting to hire a DC also inexcusable and why the D is as bad as last year. These are big Greg issues.

Having said this - we’re still better off in the long run winning more games than less this year. Greg would have to get to 5 to have any real chance of getting retained (and still very doubtful at 5) - and going 5-4 the rest of the way is a major long shot. But each game that he shows life allows us to get closer to getting through the season. Removing him right now is not suddenly making this team better. Zinn is in a better position if he wins more in my opinion because when she shops the field then she can at least play it like waiting it out could be possible if she doesn’t find what she wants. Desperate is never a better thing. Just my opinion anyway.

Makes sense! Agree the 2 losses were bad losses. UMass being much worse. BC at least is an ACC team and we were playing with a first time starting QB who just didn’t have it.… that said if we play like we played today the rest of the way I think we’ll turn a lot of opinions around
Brian, thank you for all you did for Rutgers Football! I am a Schiano man too but we cannot lose to teams like UMASS and BC. As much as I love Greg for what he has done for Rutgers football, playing like we did those first two games does a lot of damage to the psyche of the fanbase.
I will admit they looked supremely better today than they have all season and you are right if we have an upset or two in our favor my opinion can change. Today was a good start in that direction.

Guys, come on, this is embarrassing. He's not really Brian Leonard. Do a little math.

He says he is 35 years old, in 2026.
Brian Leonard played at Rutgers from 2003 through 2006.
Did Brian Leonard enroll at Rutgers when he was 12?

I gave you a like just because you had the guts to go against the current "...anti-Schiano mob ..." Think there's a lot of big mouths on these forums, who don't move the needle on hiring and firing, because they're not opening their wallets, and there's lots of reasons to still respect Schiano -- but, he's getting paid lots of money, too much in fact, underperformed, until last night seemed a bit stale, has had trouble pulling in assistants, and still remember him leaving Rutgers in lurch by running to the NFL like he did, taking a bunch of coaches with him. If he could just coach and get his guys to play like last night, and have better luck in the portal, all would be well. Still, probably too late for that ... my concern is the remaining length of his contract and not sold on some of the names thrown around as a replacement, but it's not my decision. Indeed he accomplished that for which he was hired, raising us from the Ash level futility. I'll end by saying, Schiano made a lot more sense in the pre-NIL era.

My heart is with you on this. But, I also think other people have a point. The slow starting seasons. The "close but no cigar" games. You can't help but Wonder if we need to seriously consider an alternative.

Very excellent summary, and if I may pick up where you left off with Ash level of futility:

Has returned Rutgers to nearly the Ash level of futility.

Has NOT accomplished what he promised-bring championships to Rutgers---not even close, finishing highest of 5th in East when divisions were in place and 9th and tied for 14th in years 5 and 6. We have a saying in our office- better to under promise and over deliver than to over promise and under deliver.

Took full advantage of AD office being empty, loading up on auxiliary staff positions, including his three sons, raising the level of spending into the top 4 of B1G schools without anything to show for it.

Too many boneheaded game day decisions resulting in losses that have been detailed elsewhere.

Small quibble about "better luck in the portal"--no, better evaluation of portal targets. Maybe the real problem was poor evaluation and an unwillingness of players to come to Rutgers.

Touting Rutgers as a developmental football program. Terrible look for a program. Sounds enticing to whom?

Our wallet was wide open when he was rehired. Now, the wallet is nailed shut.

The saga of 1.0 and 2.0 is reminiscent of the old Gilda Radner Roseanne Roseannadanna character----It's always something, if it's not one thing, it's another. . . . it's the offense, now it's the defense, we are a developmental program, we are not there "yet", we were not vertically aligned. . . . .

Not sure how one good season in a mediocre conference has led to such a following.

No one expects Schiano to compete with Ohio St, Michigan and whoever else. It’s the other teams he’s losing to along with now BCU and UMass that are his downfall.
That was just the cumulation of many things. A good hire int eh pre-NIL era, I'm just annoyed he has three years left on his contract.

Why not give him the NIL support to see whether he makes sense in the NIL era. Kelly was on track to do that before UMass. Bring in a GM with NFL experience to oversee the portal. This Halfassed nonsense we’re currently doing isn’t working. We need to get serious. Next year, all the portal developmental kids we landed will be ready to go, especially the QB. This year, they’re acclimating.

Why not give Schiano enough NIL to see whether he can make it. Kelly was on track to do this before UMass. He’s been operating with 1 hand tied behind his back. We took too many developmental kids who should be ready next year. A GM with NFL experience would improve our portal outcomes.

I feel Hobbs was strong armed into offering that deal.

But that is just my view from very far away.
Strong armed? Perhaps.
Remember the timing- extension December 12, 2023.
Hobbs resigns August 16, 2024.

He knew he was compromised, and he was not going to put up a fight. Compromised like Senator Geary in the Godfather 2.

In a vacuum I see what you are saying, but that’s just the problem. Rutgers is not LSU, LSU could hire a broom stick to be their coach and they would win. Not true at RU.

On top of his Miami / Rutgers / Bucs resume, Greg was a National Champion winning defensive coordinator. If Greg goes, do you really think we’re getting a National champ coordinator to come to Rutgers??? No way. We were lucky he was willing to take on this job in the first place
You lost me at national championship coordinator. They won the national championship the year after he left.
