I think on one occasion I did complain about the offense but would never want anyone but Cal at UK. :100points:[thumb2]

I’d like a headcount. My guess is the number that hate Cal isn’t as high as it seems. If there were 1,000 of us standing around talking, and a handful were contrarians that way, doing some loud hating, it would be obvious what it was - a small percentage. In a place like this, where it’s just lines of text on a screen, a few can create the impression that they are a big number....

1/3 are gonna love you
1/3 are gonna hate you
1/3 will go with the wind

An old AD I worked for 20 years ago told me this and it applies with cal. It’s a minority on the message forum bc the fans cal has turned off to UK basketball are now apathetic. They hated OAD from the get go. The 1/3 that love him love whatever he does however he does it. He walks on water. Don’t make the mistake of thinking a message forum is indicative of the actual fan base. I know folks who are still mad about cal bc they think he adds tarnish to the program. Those folks don’t care about a message forum.

Definitely do not dislike him as a person but he’s greatly disappointed me with all the NBA s*** and only having one Championship in ten years.

We should have more.

No there isn't. I bet there are not 3 fans who would quit following UK and be fans of wherever JC went
That’s what Rick Pitino thought would happen when he went to UofL but it didn’t happen. I think Cal is perfect for the UK job but if he left for another school no way in hell I would stop being a UK fan.

I would like for him to change how he runs the program and make championships the number 1 priority here. I want him to maintain some roster continuity from year to year. If he would do all that I would love him to be our coach for another 15 years or so.

Oh I’m sure they would be UK “fans” but they feel that no one can replace Cal. They believe he is the perfect coach for UK and that we will suffer in his absence.

I don’t believe there is a perfect coach for UK or any program for that matter.

They also would be the same fans who would prefer UKs record over Novas record during Cal’s era because Nova flamed out early many years. This is the tell tell sign. Ask them to go back to 2010 and whether they would prefer UKs results or Novas results. These fans prefer swag more than anything.

You’ve said this enough now in enough different threads that I genuinely believe it’s what you think. Rather than a silly pretext used to denigrate the coach. But it appears you won’t follow suit and extend the same grace. Certainly 2 titles are better than 1. That’s like 10th grade math. But surely you can see the appeal in preferring consistent, year after year success?

I’ll put a similar question to you I just put to BoulderCat in another thread. Exaggerated to make the point. 2 teams over the same 10 year period. Team A has 2 titles, but zero tournament wins in the other 8 years. Team B has 1 title, but makes the Final Four the other 9 years. You can’t see how someone might prefer Team B’s record just plainly on the merits, without it being some sort of forced defense of Cal?

You know, every program hangs Final Four banners. Every one.

And by the way, speaking only for myself, my thinking that after Cal leaves our program will likely suffer a few years in the wilderness has more to do with the lack of an obvious successor and, frankly, the law of averages, than it does with a line by line review of Cal’s traits. The main reason, I think, people say he’s perfect for the UK job has little to do with recruiting, or offense or defense or any single aspect of his coaching. It’s about his personality. Tubby showed us, and BCG proved conclusively, that personality matters here, perhaps more than anything. You need a huge, outsized, extroverted personality. The kind that doesn’t mind being stopped in Kroger or while out to eat by some random fan. The will go to Glendale Days and the Rotary Club weekly breakfast. And mostly, that doesn’t care when people doubt you and criticize your coaching when you’ve won more than anyone else. He’s possibly the best recruiter ever. He’s one of the very best teachers of defense in the whole country. His teams are routinely mentally and physically tougher than just about anyone. None of that would matter if he had Clyde’s personality.

So, who’s out there that makes you think, that guy would be great for this job? There is no one obvious. Indiana basketball. UCLA. Nebraska football. Alabama. Michigan. The list is long of programs that thought because they’d always been successful that they always would. Until they didn’t. We’re not Duke - I’d actually wager a decent amount that when K leaves they will be hurting for a long while. But the odds say we’re due. Cal is awesome, but it’s more about math and who’s out there.....

So every UK coach after Rupp has been a failure according to you. That’s a ridiculous standard and I wonder why you even bother being a UK fan.

The championship or bust crowd actually thinks they are in the majority.

Here is the deal with the coaches- they are the biggest part of the program whether you like it or not, especially in this era.

I mean, if you don't want to say that the coaches are the program, someone is...it isn't a mythological beast. It takes an AD hiring the right coach and the coach performing.

Hall successful. Sutton, train wreck. Pitino was awesome at UK. Tubby had his moments, both good and bad. BCG, train wreck. Cal, awesome. Those are the coaches in my lifetime. Unless we start going into seasons knowing we aren't competing (see many of Tubby years), I'd never want Cal gone. Just like I never wanted Pitino gone.

Cal is a winner, our players are 99% class acts, charitable, successful, media attention to programs all of the above.

Cal is damn good at his job and that is what makes the program a success....so I want the best in the role, to me that is Cal by a long shot.

Look at the attention to the program now in comparison to what it was in '05. It is night and day. Cal has completely rejuvenated our program, it wasn't by happenstance.

I agree. Unfortunately some on here feel the need to tar and feather anyone that may question something that CJC does.
I question his style and tactics.
But for some it’s overtly obvious when 90% of their thread starts or posts are “questioning” Cal.
Big difference

It’s convenient to call Sutton’s time a trainwreck because of how it ended, but it started off pretty well and there was a lot of excitement. Trainwreck is probably still a good definition, but it was one of those party trains where everyone was having fun and thought they were going somewhere cool.

Nope, Rupp too. He had a hell of a run but also was a "failure" outside of that. Forty years and just four championships and all of them over a few years.

What makes you think all of these folks dislike Cal?

Because so many on this board consider any criticism as “hate.”

His personality is great for our program. He fits like a glove. I love his role in the community and that he’s a good person. However, there’s no perfect coach out there that doesn’t need to make changes. Every good leader has to adapt to their circumstances and overcome the obstacles.

I think there are very few, if any, that actually dislike Cal. There are some that sometimes second guess his tactics, but with few exceptions no fans want another coach. The problem on this forum is there are a handful of posters that think they’re “hall monitors” with special powers to make everyone walk the line they draw. I laugh at those morons. They’re like the five year olds that take their ball and go home if others don’t play exactly like they want to. The only time they ever post is when they call out other fans. They’re sort of like the pile of dogshit you step in from time to time. Harmless but annoying and stinky. You just have to scrap it off and let it blow away in the wind like all dogshit eventually does.
