Thornton transferring from Duke???

You always hope that stuff works out between every kid and your school, and if the kid seems like a good enough kid, you always want them to stick around, you know?
Trent Jr is a good shooter from what I have seen of him. He shot 40% from three and 80% from the stripe in EYBL last season. I do agree though that he is not a PG, especially not at a high D1 college,
I'll dig around and find out which PGs we've extended offers to in the 2017 class. I do know, however, that Duke is very high on Tre Jones (Tyus Jones' brother) in the 2018 class.
Robinson was placed on scholarship prior to this season because Duke had an extra one to be filled. It's common belief that his scholarship will be pulled the 2016-17 season.
Word is Papa Thornton has not been overly impressed with how Coach K used his son offensively. He hasn't felt like he's allowed Thornton has been as involved as he should be.
Let's remember something about Thornton. Coach K is a manipulative sorry butt anyway. He talked this kid into reclassifying (supposed to have been 2016 class) last spring because Brandon Ingram was not going to go to Duke unless they had a PG. Thornton's reclassifying & committing to Duke is what sealed the deal for Ingram. True story!
Remember Coach K visited Jamal Murray after Nike Hoop Summit but felt Thornton had a better shot at reclassifying & focused there.
I don't think he would, but stranger things have happened. That's why I asked him what he's heard.

Derryck was basically handed the starting PG spot at Duke University. That's pretty damn rarified air, and a great player could make that into a massive first step to the pros.

Point is K didn't run to Thornton because he wanted him so badly. He wanted Brandon Ingram & Thornton was the ticket. If your a connected Duke fan then you know what I posted is true...with the exception of manipulation. You choose to see it as a golden opportunity but I see it as manipulation. And if K really still wanted Thornton he wouldn't be transferring. But he used him...got Brandon, got a year from Thornton & is now finished with him.
If this happens, I'm sure we'll hear cries of outrage about Thornton being recruited over. Opens up PT for Frank Jackson, a better-looking prospect, clears up backcourt logjam if Allen returns, and frees up a scholarship for Bolden.
No. Thornton was long expected at Duke, just a year later... Long before Ingram seemed likely to be pried away from UNC. Then, as Jones blew up, it got more and more likely DT would come early. Your speculation about "If K really wanted DT he wouldn't be transferring" is based on nothing. That isn't how it works. What, if Derryck Thornton (or his dad or whoeve) says "DT is unhappy that he wasn't the primary option at Duke this year, and if he isn't next year he transfers," then K is supposed to... Say okay, you are it?
He's the only true PG on the roster, or coming in. Jackson is a combo. Allen is a 2. Kennard is a wing. A bunch of ball dominant guys at point doesn't work with Tatum and Giles and I'm not sure it allows Allen to be the scorer he is either.
They'll be super talented, and Jackson is a better prospect, but he isn't a real point. He's a better Quinn Cook, not Tyus Jones. Fit might be an issue.

It's not everyone's goal to get to the NBA as soon as possible. Allen's draft position is pretty much going to be the same no matter what year he goes. He's not a transcendent talent that will be the next guy taken based on potential. He is what he is and will not get any better.
Draft position is affected by the others in the draft. A guy like Allen could slip into the second round by sticking around and joining a stronger draft next year.
The transcendent talents are the ones whose position stays nearly the same regardless. But they usually want to cash a check before they blowout a knee.

Sulaimon was a transfer but I understood that one. He was selfish on the court and likely had some off-court issues as well. Thornton was OK, had some good moments but if his dad wants him to be "the man" at Duke, well that will never happen. Don't remember ever seeing the dad in the stands at Duke (maybe he wasn't at the games) which seems to be a sort of privilege thing as well.
Ask McAdoo if that's true. Went from possible lottery pick to undrafted. I would bet good money Allen is not a first rounder if he comes back.
Was rumored to be a sexual assault at a camp or something. There was a story in the Duke Chronicle that addressed the alleged sexual assault but it never really grew legs because the girl didn't report it as such. Sulaimon's biggest issue was selfishness, attitude, body language on the court, wouldn't cheer for teammates when he was taken out of games. He was kicked out of practice multiple times and K had multiple meetings with him and it never seemed to get any better. The straw that broke the camel's back was after Duke's loss at ND, where Sulaimon did not play well or very much got into it with Matt Jones (who was playing over him) & K in the locker room post game.
His draft stock isn't going to go up if he enters the draft next year, it will only go down.
