You are off base. @GOING FOR #9 , who has criticized Cal since day 1 and hates the OAD, wants Cal to recruit less talented players so they would stay longer.

@Double Tay is asking a perfectly sensible question that 9 refuses to answer.

Which OAD's next year would he replace with longer term players and which longer terms players would these be?

His argument has zero basis and he refuses to answer any questions on points he pulled out of his own butt...

i am still waiting for him to tell me which coach is using a recruiting system that has had better success than Cal has at UK

Yes lets recruit more 4 year guys...... So next year lets start

Pg- Hawkins 4th year sr.
Sg- Charles Matthews (most likely a 4 year player)
Sf- Derek Willis 4th year sr.
Pf- Alex Poythress 5th year sr (if we beg him to come back to help us with this goal)
C- Marcus Lee 4th year sr.

there you go................ How many wins you think we'll rack up with that group?

Now I'll take Fox, Monk, Gabriel, Bam , and Bolden and wave good bye to you as we get to the final four in the NCAA's while you are trying to get to the final four in the NIT...

You're a liar. It's that simple. You've lied everytime you post. I advocated for cal before BCG. I advocated for cal this time around and I made it perfectly clear I love cal. You have misrepresented what I said several times now. Please go back and dig up anything I said negative about the man. Hahahaha even now I offer a critique about recruiting I didn't go into a diatribe of anything else about the man. You're a disgusting poster to twist the original intent of my post. Several people get what I'm saying. There are a few likes and as another poster suggested there is nothing wrong with suggesting cal do more to hold on to his players. It's real simple but you can't comprehend simple things. Sick of you twisting what I say.

"there is nothing wrong with suggesting cal do more to hold on to his players"

Explain this line for us (as you continue to move the goalposts).

What should Cal do?

Lie to them so we would have a better team?

He has stated many times he provides info he receives from the NBA and offers his advice if they want it.

So tell us what he should do "hold on to his (your) players"

Coach K has the best model. He brings players in who are 1 and done and he retains most with exception of his championship season last year. he gets similar types of recruits and has a knack for keeping them around. He also has 2 championships in 5 years. You gonna dispute this too ??

It's been well documented that Cal wants the One and Done rule to change. He thinks there should be incentives in place to keep players multiple years [insurance in case of injury and stipends being among them].

But until that day comes, Cal is making the best out of a flawed system. And his teams have been in the hunt more often than not during his tenure here.

Not sure why this is such a hard concept to grasp. If you have an issue with this, you're better off rooting for another team anyway or making like said ticket holders and dropping the whole thing. Cuz I don't see Cal's approach changing any time soon, given the circumstances and current landscape of the sport.

Lie to them? The Harrison's, Doron lamb, dakari, on and on had no business leaving when they did. you are a bystander with no opinion. You watch too much msnbc and just want to argue and fight.

It's all about money to you? There's no value in encouraging guys who are on the fence to develop some academic skills and help them mature before sending them off? What world do we live in where so many players are sent off to be a second rd pick as a freshman or sophomore haha. Encouraging a player to learn some basic life skills in college is not a lie. Your arguments are based on the lie that college athletics is to develop players for the pros. That's the lie.

Duke wasn't even the best team both Championship seasons, just good enough. And lucky enough to have a cakewalk region.

Coach K also whiffs on occasion. See the Mercer and Lehigh games. Where were they in 2011? Exactly.

I think you have the wrong picture of Cal, like he is literally pushing kids out the door when they have little chance to succeed at the next level. He gives them an honest assessment, but the choice is ultimately up to what they and their family want. Would you rather he manipulate them into staying when they clearly don't want to? How do you think that would play out?

My last post in this thread. He pushed me on specific system a coach who has a better system without a doubt it's K. I can't stand coach K but his success has been 2 titles in 2010 and 2015. He keeps players around generally and has two championships in 5 years bc of it. Those are just facts

I'm sorry many will hate me for this thread but it's true. 5 #1 classes and 1 championship. Who knows for next year but I'm not optimistic. To win title you must have some seasoned STRONG unpperclassmen. We went and got Cal to win championships. Not regular season games, not SEC titles, and certainly not to be known as the NBA farm club. 25 or whatever pros under Cal and again 1 championship! You can't win 38 straight then lose that should never, ever happen! I love Cal as a coach and as our ambassador but I do not like his recruiting and retainment practices. I've been all for them until now. No one cares if you get to elite 8, final four or the NC game, they care if you win it all. That's what people hang their hat on. Cal man you are here for the fans ever much as you are here for the athletes.

If you're not going to win championships with the one and done philosophy I encourage a change for the fans. it is frustrating for our fans to not get to know these kids. To have guys 1 or 2 years and watch them leave is honestly getting old. Its time for a change. It's time to bring in more 3 and 4 year players. It's time to encourage a kid like Tyler to stay and graduate as a hedge against the wall he may be up against in the NBA. Life is not all about money, yet the message Cal is sending to kids like my son is, college is good for a year or two then go out and get yours. K, Ole Roy even Clappy get kids of the caliber of the guys we lose to stay. What happened to the value of the college experience? 10 years ago all of these guys would not have left the way they have from UK. Cal shoves them out the door for the next group and us the fans who pay the cost of the program do not get to see a 3-4 year progression of the player. We see nothing. Murray and skal bam all of 9 mos. and likely gone.

As a lifelong fan I remember getting my cats pause yearbook every year and reading and getting to know the players. this solidified my love for the cats, not championships at the time "early mid 80s" but the experience of opening that yearbook every year and then letting the season play out feeling like I knew who I was rooting for. That is gone. Last night my son was very bummed after the loss he's 12. I thought it was because we lost...he was in part but what bummed him out the most was that it was Tyler Ulis last game and he only got to see him at UK for 2 yrs. a 5'9" player. 5 #1 recruiting classes, 1 championship and we don't get a chance to see team progression. A reboot rather every season. I don't like it
your expectations are unrealistic and Cal's results are incredibly good there 64 teams that try to win championship every year lol I have been a UK fan for 47 years and have high expectations but this period with Cal has been off the charts successful.

You're right. Could have used him last year.

Wiltjer wouldn't have averaged 10 min a game last year are you crazy? He was smart to transfer his game doesn't fit with cal's strategist. You have to be at least competent on defense to succeed with cal and Wiltjer is not.

The cupboard was bare following a Championship year. Guys took the opportunity and left. Not Cal's fault.

Weak incoming class. Not Cal's fault.

Ryan Harrow's father had a stroke. He had some other personal issues too. Not Cal's fault.

Oh yeah, and Nerlens blew out his knee. Not Cal's fault.

K's system isnt better. He won 1 title with his old system and won 1 with the one and done system. Two different systems.

He used 1 and done 1 season so he has a 100% success rate. K is constantly tweaking what he does. He watches what others do to bring success and he changes it to his style. Every season he changes things up. K is probably the most reflective coach in the NCAA and he is willing to do what it takes for his program to be successful. He wins championships bc he coaches for championships not regular season success.

Because K is a helluva coach does not mean I would rather have him here. As a person I like cal far more than coach k. Cal is the perfect fit for us. He has been tremendously successful. That said it doesn't mean hes perfect and this forum is to discuss UK hoops. We just got put out second round and I addressed why I thought that was and why next season is no certainty.

There is no such thing as a "system" coaches have to be flexible season to season and not get caught up in a fixed mindset.

Plenty of context. I know what happened in 2013. I never blamed cal. The other guy tried to use K losing in first rd and I said to him ok, well we didn't even make it one season. 2013 to me is not something I even consider as it pertains to Cals success.

BtW I emailed this thread to Cal to see what he thinks. I told him I started the thread and who I am. We see what he says

Cal's whole philosophy is getting kids to the NBA.

You might want him to retain more players. I don't think anyone would mind seeing an Anthony Davis stick around another year or a John Wall.

But that's not how he does it.

The reason we get those type of kids is Cal's track record.

If Cal ever started holding people back, we would not be as good in the recruiting game IMO.

I think there's a huge disconnect with some of the fanbase. Some people are all about titles and that's it. If you win, you were successful, if not well you failed. So in this light, they don't see what Cal has done as a success. They scream Oh just 1 title and everyone leaving year after year. They see Uconn win two titles with way less talent and wonder why.

There's too much luck that plays into this. Last season odds pegged us at 41%. Now 41% is large but that still means we miss 6 of 10 times.

Cal's model works. The majority agrees. It gives us the best possible chance of winning.

What do you consider 1 and done? Because if you argue Irving , Parker , and this year as not being one and done for Duke then I could easily argue 2011, 2013, and 2014 as not being 1 and done since only 1 or 2 players left early in those years.

P.S. Duke was hoping Thornton and Jeter would also be 1 and done when they were recruiting them

I don't have a problem with 1 and done players but they should be an exception IMO not a selling point. 2/3 of each class should be multi year players in each recruiting class. Towns needed to go no doubt. Davis was ready too no doubt. Cousins, wall were ready. If it stopped there I would say nothing. But when you have mass exodus every year you cannot build a program like that

K has stated that he is recruiting OAD players to win
which OAD players in the last 3 years has K convinced to come back?
without his OAD players last year, that team would have been NIT bound
BTW Cal recruited Jefferson

K's recruiting is much closer to Cal's then any other coach in CBB
his last title was directly related to OAD players
which of those 3 came back to Duke

your argument just gets stranger and with more holes in it everytime you post

Did Cal force those kids to leave?

Or did he just create an environment that allows for kids to improve and if they are good enough he wont hold them back like other coaches do.

So what do you do?
If you Cal do you take 2-3 top players and then start looking at mid tier players knowing they will stay longer than 1 year?

I don't think recruiting lesser talent is a recipe for winning.

Cal has been here 7 years now. I'd argue he's already debunked the idea that you can't build a program like this.

I think your wrong when you say that Coach Cal needs to change his Philosphy on his recruiting. That is what we hear all the time that Coach Cal needs to recruit more 3-4 year players and no as many OAD. I disagree with that statement because Coach Cal recruits the best and if some fans remember before we landed Coach Cal the former Head Coach was getting 3 star players that were 3-4 year players. In his last 5 years we were heading to the NCAA Tourney as a 8 or 9 Seed and usually losing in the 2nd round. I would rather recruit the best and have a chance at making the Final Four and winning the Championship. We have now been to 4 Final Fours out of Coach Cal's 7 years and an Elite 8 loss. We have 1 championship and 1 runner-up in those 4 years at the Final Four. Your not going to have that chance to be able to play in 4 Final Four and win a Championship with 2* and 3* players. With Coach Cal's recruiting classes we have players that stay 3 or 4 years and there has been some players that Coach Cal has told there not ready and they make the decision to go to the NBA. All Coach Cal can do is give the players the information from the NBA and they have to make the decision. We had a couple in each of the last 2-3 years recruiting classes that left after year one and that was there decision to leave after 1 year. I would rather watch like next year a Class that has Fox, Monk, BAM, SKJ, Gabriel, and maybe Bolden than 2 and 3* star players. We also have players returning next year in Briscoe, Lee, Willis, Hawkins, Hump, and Wynyard to go along with the #1 Recruiting Class. So, we do have returning players to go along with the OAD players each year.

So you mean we are talking about Lamb, Johnson and the Harrison twins.... Those are the 2nd round players.

Teague and Goodwin were told by teams they would be taken late in the first round... so thats not really borderline when you have assurances.

You make it sound like its far more than the 4.

We have won 8 in all the years of Kentucky basketball. Its unrealistic to think it's a given.

I am on your side somewhat here, but please consider this...if Cal "wronged" these guys as you are saying, where is the backlash from these kids as they all seem to be loyal to Cal and the program ,so maybe Cal is actually giving his imput and they are making the decisions? I know that I read that he was surprised the twins came back and that Dakari's people were the ones that pushed him to the draft against Cal's advice...but, you are like me in that you are a little envious of the control K seems to have on his players
