Cal needs to change his philosophy

I'm sorry many will hate me for this thread but it's true. 5 #1 classes and 1 championship. Who knows for next year but I'm not optimistic. To win title you must have some seasoned STRONG unpperclassmen. We went and got Cal to win championships. Not regular season games, not SEC titles, and certainly not to be known as the NBA farm club. 25 or whatever pros under Cal and again 1 championship! You can't win 38 straight then lose that should never, ever happen! I love Cal as a coach and as our ambassador but I do not like his recruiting and retainment practices. I've been all for them until now. No one cares if you get to elite 8, final four or the NC game, they care if you win it all. That's what people hang their hat on. Cal man you are here for the fans ever much as you are here for the athletes.

If you're not going to win championships with the one and done philosophy I encourage a change for the fans. it is frustrating for our fans to not get to know these kids. To have guys 1 or 2 years and watch them leave is honestly getting old. Its time for a change. It's time to bring in more 3 and 4 year players. It's time to encourage a kid like Tyler to stay and graduate as a hedge against the wall he may be up against in the NBA. Life is not all about money, yet the message Cal is sending to kids like my son is, college is good for a year or two then go out and get yours. K, Ole Roy even Clappy get kids of the caliber of the guys we lose to stay. What happened to the value of the college experience? 10 years ago all of these guys would not have left the way they have from UK. Cal shoves them out the door for the next group and us the fans who pay the cost of the program do not get to see a 3-4 year progression of the player. We see nothing. Murray and skal bam all of 9 mos. and likely gone.

As a lifelong fan I remember getting my cats pause yearbook every year and reading and getting to know the players. this solidified my love for the cats, not championships at the time "early mid 80s" but the experience of opening that yearbook every year and then letting the season play out feeling like I knew who I was rooting for. That is gone. Last night my son was very bummed after the loss he's 12. I thought it was because we lost...he was in part but what bummed him out the most was that it was Tyler Ulis last game and he only got to see him at UK for 2 yrs. a 5'9" player. 5 #1 recruiting classes, 1 championship and we don't get a chance to see team progression. A reboot rather every season. I don't like it

Here is why I think you are off base.

The other 3 years you believe we should have won the title have ZERO to do with the roster.

By the end of the following seasons, 2010-2014-2015, we had just as good, if not a better, team than anyone.

2010 - You didnt like Wall, Cousins, Bledsoe, and Orton teamed with Miller and Patterson?

Put the WVU game blame where it belongs.. On Cal or terrible shooting or both.

I go with both. Cal is a good enough Coach to have his guys stop shooting 3's regardless of the defense. He had two dynamite guards who could penetrate and the 2 strongest block players.

Cal should have intervened and coached better.

2014 - A bunch of freshmen and WCS evolved over the season into a very good team.

Put the UConn game blame where it belongs.. On Cal or WCS injury.

I go with both, WCS for obvious reasons, and again Cali is a better defensive coach than what he showed that game.

2015 - Superstar roster with youth and experience.

Put the Wisconsin game blame where it belongs.. On Cal

I watched Tyler and Booker struggle on defense that game, no issue with the twins in at the end.

Cal slowing it up way early and not calling a TO during the 3 possession stretch of horrible offense did us in.

Love Cal, he is perfect for UK. He is the best recruiter of all time. He is a fantastic coach, but not infallible.

Our lack of titles has zero to do with the rosters.

Terrible shooting nights, injuries, and Cal had way more impact than who was playing.

Keep in mind, because of Cal we were actually in those games to begin with...

If you
OP, i am not going to bash you, just ask you a simple question

which system would you use that would give UK more success than what Cal has had?
first thing is first...our program should come first. Not individual players. I'm not saying don't consider their needs but Cals job is to recruit, develop and win. Don't put individual needs over the program. I get sick of and I know lots of people are sick of hearing about our NBA success. The majority of UK fans are not NBA fans. Next cal needs to encourage more players to stay. he's turned rupp into an NBA farm league venue. There have been lots of busts as well as NBA success and instead of selling UK as a one and done school cal needs to tell the kids they come to UK for an education and the primary signal from cal should be that he is there first to support academic development and to see kids accomplish graduating, not tell them we are not even going to do a graduation plan as he did with Tyler. Like I said its about recruiting and retaining most players. When players come in they shouldn't be thinking in nine months I'm leaving. They should come on to the campus to be at UK as students and if one blows up into a KAT first overall pick then give them a fair appraisal and send them on. A guy like skal and Ulis honestly shouldn't be leaving this season. they are rolling the dice and have no back up other than Europe. These guys like skal 1 and done have no incentive to play hard in college he knows he's going to get picked on his size and athleticism alone.

UK is a college basketball program. It's not a version of the NBADL. Cal has to build some continuity in our program or we won't win another title. Our program has no foundation right now. Half the guys leaving UK would stay at many other schools. We should ask why. Doron lamb for instance should have stayed, Ulis should stay, dakari and many others should have stayed. its frustrating to see a Doron lamb go early and end up in Europe. What a waste. How about encouraging Doron to play his career at UK then go or just recommend he go straight to Europe? I know some don't like this but we have as many busts or more than we have players making it in the NBA. What has happened that a kid as a freshman would leave to be a second round pick? If you say money then I say send him to Europe from day one so he can make his money. Don't bring him here for a year then watch him get drafted in second rd or undrafted. It senseless what's going on.

Agree with part of this, but with the new rules these guys don't have to make a hasty decision anymore and they should have very little gray area as to where they stand before having to a make a decision to come ack or not...with Chad Fords latest report it looks good for three of the guys as he is saying all three are in the top 20 picks...if that is the case I wish them the best

You have no idea how todays basketball works, and it shows.

Most of all, this post reveals that you are selfish and only want what is best for you.

We would all love for kids to stay longer, but most of realize the NBA has changed the rules, not Cal and we understand the kid's position.

It looks like you are not cut out for UK bball anymore, of course, I remember you complaining 10-15 years ago about everything else....

Listen buddy...I'm sure you are a bastion of basketball knowledge, know the business and the ethics behind it. You speak in such a self righteous manner like you know it all. I'm sorry you don't. It's a simple fix. You want to play college basketball or do you want the instant gratification? You want the money? Go play in Europe.

It's not about me it's about our program which will exist withOut you me or cal. You ever coached at a very high level? I mean have you coached teams that have potential pros, D1 players, etc. Any sport? I have and continue to do so and I guarantee you if I put the needs of a player or two over the program I lose respect of the community. Cal is losing respect. There have already been a couple articles calling him out as underachieving. There is a significant of fans segment that agree with me. Hell I've been hearing it all year and I kept saying let it play out first and they have even helped inform my opinion. If you're gonna swing for the fences every season, well best do better than 1 for 5.

Let me be clear. I wanted cal here one of the few. I want him to be here. But after 6 seasons for all he has done it maybe time to evaluate and tweak. Sorry you don't like that but this is the mindset that successful coaches have. Cals mindset on this issue has been somewhat fixed. It's time to consider tweaking it. Can you tell me for sure we will be on the thick of it next year? What about the year after when most of the team leaves? Another "bridge" another reboot?

You have been spewing this I am a big time coach crap for years.

Where did you coach?

What pros did you coach.

Provide the answers or dont throw that out there.

And to your point COACH, most coaches definitely understand the lay of the land nowadays concerning the OAD.

The most successful coaches we know are K and Cal and they seem to disagree with you.

Hard to argue with anything you said.

Things happen. I would argue that UK has been in 2 Final Fours recently that they had no business being in, 2011 & 2014.

As for this year, it just seemed to me that this team never got lucky. A&M, Kansas, numerous injuries, etc. Maybe it's just me but I can't remember one time where I thought UK caught a major break.

Ulis is now moved to a top 20 pick, some even saying maybe the lottery as such he is hitting his ceiling at his height. Arguing that young man should stay is a straight "eff your future and your family" move and I find it hard to believe you would be singing the same tune if it was your son.

Even in the old days with the most physically gifted and skilled players it was understood it was essentially time to let go when the lottery talk began. Ulis is a little man for basketball, his ticket has arrived and it would be unreasonably selfish to even suggest he pass it.

If you feel so strongly why don't you set up a trust for him that will make up lost income and present the offer to him and his family.

I would never tell you who or where I coach. I don't need my former or current players being harassed by a message board troll. I will tell you broadly I have 3 players currently playing for our men's and women's US national team in soccer. I have 3 former players in the MLS and several in college at all levels. When your argument falls flat you like to attack the messenger. Terrible

just admit that you're being whiny and emotional and illogical and stop trying to defend an indefensible point.

"Cal is losing respect."
"My 12 year old was sad."
"I miss looking at Catspause magazine"

Okay, neat, but your feelings don't trump tangible evidence and historical results. You sound petulant and ridiculous.

Those of who us live in reality and have some perspective appreciate this run. But by all means, email Mitch a picture of your mood ring and tell him he should hire Coach K and get back to us.

long post, but you still never answered my question

if you do not think Cal wants to win then you obviously have not paid attention

would you rather Cal use a system like Izzo or Pitino?
please tell me which coach has a system that you prefer that has had better results than Cal has at UK

If explained to you in full detail go back and read it. You're trying to equate UL and MSU with UK and that is like comparing titanic and a tugboat. I explained it in detail go read it. There isn't a team in college basketball that we can compare UK coached by John calipari with. Put the program first. Recruit to retain 2/3 of each recruiting class so there are no gaps. Encourage kids like K does to stay in college and learn to deal with life and the important things before handing them to a hit or miss career. This isn't brain surgey. You do what you have to to win and stay consistent year in and year out.

If explained to you in full detail go back and read it. You're trying to equate UL and MSU with UK and that is like comparing titanic and a tugboat. I explained it in detail go read it

you explained how you think it should be
that was not my question

which coach has a system that has had better results then Cal at UK has had?
if you start recruiting like IZZO and Pitino that is the results you are going to get
and all those great players are going to go to KU, Duke, UNC and a few others and we will be another 20 years winning a title

times have changes my friend, you adapt or become irrelevant

I would never tell you who or where I coach. I don't need my former or current players being harassed by a message board troll. I will tell you broadly I have 3 players currently playing for our men's and women's US national team in soccer. I have 3 former players in the MLS and several in college at all levels. When your argument falls flat you like to attack the messenger. Terrible

Here is the deal.

The only message you are delivering is your own.

You insinuate you are some big time bball coach with D1 and Pro palyers..

Yet you bring up soccer?

And most likely middle school, maybe high school?

Yeah thats comparable.

The OAD is an NBA rule, not Cals rule. Im sorry you dont get it.

Claiming we would be better by recruiting less talented players makes no sense.

Our FF run has been incredible, we would all love another title, but dumb folks like you seem to forget pre 2009....

Go hangout with those thousands of friends of yours that are canceling season tickets.

You cant stand it for someone to call you out, especially someone you cant bully.

You spout off so much and always have. I have been disagreeing with you since your name was GOING FOR #7.....

I'll tell you this... I know lots of people giving up season tickets bc costs are going up and they are not happy about what's happening.

No you don't. Stop lying. Go throw a tantrum somewhere else.

And where do you coach? What players have you coached? If you're not going to answer despite being asked multiple times, I'll assume your lying about that too.

your agenda is without substance

I don't care what you think. I see poes perspective better now I know he's mixed up with you. If you guys could read and comprehend we could discuss. You have twisted and taken everything I said out of context. You can't comprehend or choose to misrepresent so we don't need to discuss things anymore. Please lock this thread mods bc Its no longer a discussion about the original topic or even UK related.

There is nothing to misconstrue.

You do not like the OAD model, you want strong upperclassmen.

Thus you want Cal to recruit lesser players.

You are still mad last year's squad lost ONE game.

You think by recruiting lesser talent we will be better than 4 FFs in 5 years.

You think Cal accepting the NBA rules and using them to his advantage is wrong.

You think the most talented kids should go to a school for the school.

You are a jr pro soccer coach so you know more than everyone else.

The real issue is you have always complained.

We have to go back 20 years to experience this current success.

You are whining and crying because you don't want kids to go pro early unless they win a title.

You refuse to accept that our best teams had players other freshmen, this year the non freshmen were inconsistent players that hurt us, excluding Tyler.

You are kind of immature and selfish. You refuse to see the world as it is.

Every kid we recruit had offers from every other blue blood and more.

This was a terrible opinion thus all of the negativity you have received.

Mainly only you and a few others. I know lots of people agree but big mouth shoutem down like you intimidates them. They aren't going to post. Honestly I made an observation and gave an opinion. That's it dude. It doesn't have any impact on my life one way or another. I'm sorry it got under your skin. I'm going to maintain that cal needs to change how he recruits for the benefit of the program. that's my one gripe with the man as our coach. I am not whining. If I were whining I would be nitpicking little things here and there. i stand by my opinion of things

So if you think Cal needs to change the way he recruits, now is your chance to go on record. Who would you not take on next year's class and who would you replace them with?

It's easy to look back and give some random opinion that we shouldn't have signed this guy or that guy. But looking ahead at the (probable) class of Bam, SKJ, Fox, Monk,Gabriel, and Boulden-who would you not take?

Look forward to your answer.

While I would agree that we had the best team in the three years you referenced above, I would disagree that we were "*far and away*" the best team. Even when looking at last year's team, I'd put both Wisconsin and Duke in the same class. We were better, but not by a large margin.

At any rate, I would be curious to know your answer to the following question. Since the tournament was expanded to 64 teams, what percentage of the time did the best team actually win the tournent? How you answer that would help me understand where you are coming from a bit better.

Because I look at those same three teams and I see an Elite Eight appearance, a National Title, and a Final Four appearance, which to me is a sign that those teams largely delivered. I don't see that as requiring a change, because it seems to me his system is working excellently. No system will ever be 100% accurate.
I agree that we were a little better than Wisconsin and Duke last year, but at the beginning when we were playing basically two teams we were a LOT better than any team in the nation. We slowly lost our edge when we went away from playing 10 each game.

Well, to be fair, 4 of Cal's seasons had loss totals of 9, 12, 11, and this year 9. That is hardly competing for championships every year. Fans on here used to mock Tubby Smith for similar loss totals. 2010, 2012, and 2015 were some of the best in UK history, but that appears to be not the norm for UK right now.

YOU DONT LISTEN...you just want to bully. Your question is nothing more than a set up to find something and harp on it like a school yard bully. DT and Poe you guys are terrible posters to attack attack. You've been this way for years so it has nothing to do with cal and it has nothing to do with recruiting. It's the fact that you harass people you don't agree with. Been watching it for years.

As for your stupid question I already answered it but a bully would never take time to read it. It's not a who's who deal it's a mind set a philosophy of recruiting and RETAINING. How many top rated recruits did K bring in this year? How many were labeled to go pro after this season? How many actually will go? You don't get it and never will but with a GED you're doing the best you can I guess

still waiting on that list of recruits you wouldn't take next year. Really looking forward to it.

I'm not in on this, and haven't totally kept up, but it's not the posters job to do that. We don't get paid multi millions to go out and attempt to put the BEST team together, that has the BEST change to win a title. Some people, not necessarily sayin you or I, believe Cal isn't really doing this. That he is good enough to tweak his style a bit, as to retain some of his roster.

And before someone says it, Cal is probably the reason we have so much turnover. It only happens that way here. He could change that if he really wanted to. But as I and others have said, he feels its his best recruiting tool. The issue is, is that recruiting tool always the best for winning championships? I understand Cal is great, and thats what he should be measured by. Too many people want to compare him to Tubby, or other SEC coaches. That's not a good measuring stick for a guy of Cals potential.

Look, I'm cool if Cal wants to stay the course and see what he can do. I still think we will look back and see multiple titles and a slew of final fours. I just happen to think Cal could be above coach K. Maybe I think he's better than he really is. I don't know.

This may have already been discussed/mentioned. But it is important enough that I'll state it (again).

The BEST team not only does not always win the championship, but does not even make it to the final game more often than not. I would estimate that the best team wins the championship maybe once every 3-5 years. Over the past 6 years, the favorite has only won it once (UK). Over the past 20 years, only 40% of the 1-seeds have even made it to the Final 4. That is what happens in a one-&-done tournament format. Add in other factors such as injuries, match-ups, playing in a non-neutral arena, having an off night, or simply the other team playing out of their mind for one game.

You are off base. @GOING FOR #9 , who has criticized Cal since day 1 and hates the OAD, wants Cal to recruit less talented players so they would stay longer.

@Double Tay is asking a perfectly sensible question that 9 refuses to answer.

Which OAD's next year would he replace with longer term players and which longer terms players would these be?

His argument has zero basis and he refuses to answer any questions on points he pulled out of his own butt...
