I think it would've been Pendleton over Coleman without Chad getting involved like he did and going after DT.
Point being that Chad had all the cards and John had no cards. Chad wanted DT from a year earlier. Money was tied to DT's hire. Same would/will happen at Iowa. Money talks, and some rich donor will get his guy.

In order for JB to have the success DT did right away, it would require the Donors to open their checkbooks to bring in the guys okie st did. I don't see that happening, the first couple years of DT's coaching and you have any idea what has cost in NIL o_O. Any solid coach, can coach blue chippers and have success, especially how far developed the kids are now a days with all the international and such. Can't miss on portal guys either, ones you bring in have to hit. That has been one of Iowa's struggles, portal guys not living up to their hype
You have a narrow view of what actually Chad paid for. NIL isn't one of them. He paid for a new coaching staff, the RTC, and scholastic programs in OK. DT shared his vision to a T, so the marriage was a given.

If so, that means WAY less to me than what I originally took it as. We would then be talking about losses to a team setting the scoring record 2 seasons in a row. It’s not like they were getting blown out by a pretty good team or even a great team. We are talking about possibly the 2 best teams of ALL TIME.

That says way more about how good PSU is than Iowa being in any way bad. Especially when you use “egregiously unacceptable”….

Also, since you are absolutely the stat guy, were any teams more competitive with PSU? I am not just saying the actual team score, but the matches themselves. Maybe a team matched up better at 1 or 2 weights and snuck in an extra win, but how many were even as competitive with PSU at all 10 weights? Did they even do it against the PSU lineup they put out against Iowa or when they sat a couple guys?

In this case context matters a lot….
What he said was factually accurate even if you misunderstood his meaning. The same context that matters to him seems to not matter to you. I am reminded of the recurring SNL bit Lowered Expectations.

Agree it's gonna take a donor and that's what I said from the beginning. Summer of 2029 is a long ways away maybe a new donor will get involved by then

Who said anything about Chad or what he did or didn't pay for?? Facts are it took MILLIONS to put together DT and his Coaching Staff. For them to build up their club team. And for them to assemble a very tough team. Doesn't matter who paid for it? It got done; that's the important thing and kudos to okie st for making it all happen. IF Iowa wants to catch up, they will need to do the same. spend millions and get the club to where it should be, followed by the rest.

Actually you said they're spending millions in NIL when in reality you have no idea what they're spending in NIL or what role that is playing in their success both on the mat and in recruiting. It's a easy knee jerk reaction to just assume kids are choosing PSU/OkSt over Iowa b/c of money but we hear time and again that isn't often the case.

So it's your belief all the kids PSU/Okst and others are beating Iowa for on the recruiting trail is only b/c of money? They're ALL getting more elsewhere? Keep fooling yourself if it helps you sleep at night. We know Bo is taking less at VT. The Raneys talked specifically about bonding with future OkSt teammates at a tourney before committing there. At the end of the day these elite kids are ALL getting paid very well. Believing they're only choosing places other than Iowa b/c they're getting paid more is head in the sand level ridiculous.

The Raney's said?? What are they going to say, yes we verballed to Iowa but OSU swooped in with a bigger offer. What about Vega?? I heard from a reliable source that he got a certain amount (I won't say how much) just to visit OSU (no strings attached)....OSU was calling him non stop after he won Super 32.

The fact of the matter is until Iowa quits being second fiddle to PSU and Okie St. in recruiting, they aren't going to beat them. Good coaching with pick of the litter recruits at every weight is unbeatable unless you join them. Good recruiting isn't going to beat great recruiting with all other things equal. Iowa needs to get title contenders at 10 weights to beat PSU. Pretty easy for us armchair quarterbacks to see, not so easy to do

Yep. It’s a three-legged stool of great recruiting, great coaching, and great funding. Take away any one of those and it’s nearly impossible to beat a program that has all three

Poor VHS is never going to hear the end WRT wrestling at Iowa. Some of you guys need to let that go. He brings exceptional insight and discussions to this board regardless of that one misstep.
He basically knows how to scan social media for info than repost as his or in a vague way acting like an insider but saying nothing. Just like his stories from the room.

Raneys didn't even have Okie st in their final decision??? It was Iowa or Illinois????????? lol... Then all sudden week before committing after already virtually giving their verbal to Iowa, they jump ship to a school they weren't even considering... Right, it wasn't for the money  . Same as Vega..

You’re painting with a pretty broad brush.

I’ll give you my opinion: For a guy to go to a school and be alright not being the man at his weight, he’s likely getting seriously compensated to not hit the portal.
I have zero inside info, but I will GUARANTEE there are non-starters at both psu and osu that are making more than some of our starters 🤷‍♂️

Again, when top kids keep verballing elsewhere and telling you why they're doing so, they can't all be lying. Not to mention it's not like we're some fringe program with no NIL resources.
And what about Vega? Was he coming to Iowa and I missed it?
I just don't like the excuse making that we're getting outbid for everyone we want when there's little to no evidence that is actually the case.

Where did you get they weren't considering Okst, from a homer on this message board? They took visits there and had convos with Taylor early on according to a couple stories and interviews they gave. I think people here just assumed they weren't in the picture b/c they already had Jax and Vega. Here's what you have to ask yourself which I think answers this whole bigger question - All other things being equal, if DT wasn't at Okst would the Raneys be there? Highly unlikely.

They gave their top 3 and Ok st wasn't even in it? Then it was narrowed down to top 2, that was Illinois and Iowa. Raney's wanted a program that had greco.

OJ said he didn't do it.....I believe him.

You're being intentionally disingenuous with the Vega comment. Pretty clear I brought up Vega because it shows a pattern of flipping recruits at OSU.

But that isn’t even CLOSE to what is happening. Iowa is still putting out top 2 or 3 AA’s every season. That is NEVER going to drop then past top 5ish.

I’m old enough to remember when 5thish was NEVER going to happen consistently. And look at us now, with no reasonable end in sight.

I think its funny some on here think Brands is just going to fulfill his contract and go off into the sunset.

1. An AD is never going to let a huge coaching opportunity go by because the timing isn't perfect and off a year or so if they know the change is imminent.
2. Beth and Tom may have a verbal understanding but urgency to not let the future of a program walk could change overnight.
3. If Beth isn't going to offer an extension to Tom's current contract at least a year prior to it ending- perhaps 2 because its hurts recruiting not being able to tell a kid you may not be the coach for his whole time in Iowa City.
4. Ever think Brands pride wont just watch her run out the clock on him when it becomes clear there isnt an extension going to be offered?
5. Re read #1 - JB is that dude. You cant let him take another job just for the current coaches feelings. Which see #4
6. You really think Beth would hire JB and ask Brands what he thinks of her new coach. You gonna ask a coach about his premature replacement? Fran didn't have a say in the new basketball coach but Tom is going to ride off without an extension as some sort of consultant? You gonna sit around and wait for him to recommend Morningstar?

You think some peoples opinions are funny but want them to believe yours 😂. Wasn't DT on the market? Did Beth go after him ? So #1 is false and already happened 🤷

I know you are not that dense. There is a huge difference in how much would have needed to be paid out then versus now in Tom's remaining contract. That much buyout in a niche sport can protect a coach. Its manageable now. Hard to get a donor to write that check unless its king football or basketball.

Also how do you know Beth didn't make a call and realized he was more interested in Stillwater and the freedom and money being offered and that ended real quickly. Ive seen the DT picture of him wearing a OK st shirt as a kid. Iowa may have not even been realistically in play.

Beth never called DT

Even if you know that for a fact- which I dont believe you or anyone on here would. She could have called a source close to the situation to get a feeler.

But say none of that happened. She was still operating on that's a big buyout and maybe not quite convinced its time. Now the buyout is significantly less for Tom, Terry & M* and you have as big a name in the sport saying on video he would field a call about the Iowa job.

This is night and day different in money and urgency. Now if Rutgers isnt in play and they dont offer could Beth gamble and punt another year? Possibly. BUt IMO if you know the end is imminent and you get this opportunity- you rip off the dang band-aid because its just bad AD to go through the motions when a future solution is ripe for the taking.

I bet if Rutgers or someone else offers first, Beth counters with the dominant hand. No one individual is bigger than sustaining the future of a program.

Unless she still think Tom;s the answer and if so where is the extension offer to not hinder him on the recruiting trail?
