I understand what you are saying. My counter point was that you are reading too much into the situation. There is a better chance that the players were a cancer to the team and the situation actually got better when they were removed. They were all new transfer players. I was more concerned about lack of depth than the team quitting on the coach. The box score indicates that they were much more in this game than the score shows ( they were covering until mid 4 th quarter) which supports my point. The bet was lost because of a 4 turn over margin.
SVP covered this one on Bad Beats last night. The interception in the end zone was disgusting.

The Colorado loss was on Bad Beats? I'd love to throw on the enormous pile of bad beats I've taken over the years, but this technically didn't seem like one. Yes, the INT in the EZ was a rough way to lose though.

I have PSU at -5.5 (I'm giving an extra 1.5 pts for white out). Gonna grab a -1 now, as I see bookmaker has already moved to -2.5.

Even Kelly in Vegas knows to look at the ugly dogs :D

This is what were up against

So you would consider USC to be the "ugly dog."

USC's defense being atrocious would only point me toward looking at the Over, as there's zero faith PSU can stop anyone right now ... and maybe the only thing allowing their offense to thrive is a horrendous defense, like what USC bring to Happy Valley. Taking PSU is a homer bet at this point. The over is probably the play, though I think it's been increasing, making it less attractive.

I'd probably only take an alt over, and parlay it with other alts. I still think there's a non-zero chance this offense is so broken, it struggles even against the sieve that is USC.

This week's PSU-related betting outcomes aren't nearly as concrete as last week's expected demolition at the hands of Northwestern. That was "easy money."

I would not consider USC to be an ugly dog considering that they won last week and PSU got clobbered in a Friday night game.

Taking PSU is 100% not a homer bet. I never ever make homer bets. My power ratings have these teams near equal (PSU 1 point better). The white-out home game plus USC's poor form on long travel make this a >3 point advantage for PSU.

I have no opinion on the total. If you like it, you should bet it yourself. The total opened up at about 56.5 and has been bet down. It's currently at 54 on bookmaker.

Re "ugly dog" ... OK. I was just going off the conversation. I consider an "ugly dog" to be one that is a huge underdog and suffers that fate because they've been terrible, and they're up against a respected opponent. I didn't see an "ugly dog" in the PSU v. USC matchup, since PSU is getting a ton of respect, straddling between being a very small dog to, now, a favorite, despite looking awful and going against a ranked squad. Happy for the clarification.

Re "homer bet" ... OK. Your analysis is much different than my own. I see being convinced enough at PSU's competitiveness in this game to wager on it as being the product of homerism by a PSU guy. Apparently it's just analysis I don't agree with at all.

Re the total ... I don't pay much mind to early lines ... I would only make wagers closer to game time, when as much information as possible has been gathered ... pretty sure I glanced at it and it was in the 52.5 range, and now it's ticked up to 54.5. I could be wrong on that, because I wasn't considering a wager when I first saw the alleged 52.5 number. 54.5 is pushing my comfort level, given just how absolutely awful PSU has been, offensively, over the last 2 weeks against Big Ten comp ... and not great Big Ten comp. If I was convinced they could even be mediocre, that 54.5 line is a gimme. The killer there is that Wisky focused on stopping the pass, and the running game couldn't really take advantage, and NW focused on stopping the running game and Becht couldn't take advantage. There's no clear path forward. Right now, I could picture a 40-17 type of whooping, and that's too close to the line to make that bet. As I said earlier, I'm most confident in an alt o/u ... a 47.5, perhaps ... and then parlaying it with some other alt o/u's, if I find some I'm comfortable with, to boost the odds to make it a worthwhile investment.

As I said, the PSU play is purely a numbers play and I only made a small bet on it. Not really any analysis, just pure power ratings and adjustment for the white out effect and USC poor travel. And the total was never at 52.5 at any book that I am aware of.

If you only make wagers close to game time, it will be very hard to win at sports betting. Period. It's not even a debate. Getting ahead of line moves is absolutely key to being a winning sports bettor. Many books judge bettors by their closing line value for a good reason. The only reason to wait until game time is typically to bet an underdog or an under when the line is moving against them. I fully support that approach.

I believe we've had a similar exchange before, but seeing value as only existing in line movements is akin to extreme technical analysis in investing, and trying to arbitrage temporal differences in access to information. I don't agree at all that this is the only route, or nearly the only route, to betting success, and still think the equivalent of superior fundamental analysis still can be quiet successful. I don't have nearly the respect you do for odds makers, and that's based off experience with them not providing me a reason to do so.

You are disagreeing with me and countless professionals in the industry. The closing line is widely considered as the sharpest and most efficient. Don't trust me. Google it. Look it up on your favorite AI app. If you think you can beat the most efficient line vs the earlier lines, be my guest. You better be really good at handicapping and constantly looking for news.

I don't have respect for the oddsmakers solely. I have respect for the betting market, of which they are only one component. I have more respect for sharp bettors than the oddsmakers. They are the ones that shape the lines that you are betting into on Saturday/Sunday. They've already bet the **** out of those lines so you need to be better than them to win long term.

Bingo...not to mention that if someone is that sharp and winning long term, then they themselves would influence the closing line because books would show them respect and move the lines off their bets.

Pretty much no one will win long term without beating the closing line since it's flipping coins.

I don't have to "trust you" ... I'm fully aware that this is true.

Deal. That's been my point from the get go. It's not the news itself that makes the difference, it's just better analysis, overall, and not allowing subsequent information to upset that eventual determination. In other words, I'm not waiting for some informational tidbit that'll put me over the edge, and hoping that no one else will know about it ... I'm simply waiting until the most information is out there as possible, practically speaking, before making a "final" judgment on what to wager on what.

Correct.

The salient point still stands that you're putting most of your eggs into the technical analysis bucket, hoping you can read the tea leaves before other "investors" read the same tea leaves the same general way, and get your temporal arbitrage advantage, and that's your potential payout, rather than relying on quality of fundamental analysis standing on its own.

Specifically, what kind of information are you using later in the week to do your analysis that wasn't already available soon after the previous game, beside injuries? What kind of analysis are you doing?

Well, in the previous post, I indicated that there aren't specific bits of information that I'm waiting for. But you mentioned injuries ... that's an obvious one that has influence ... illnesses, as well (that happened recently), weather (I'll give you a recent example following this) ... scandal ... travel issues ... hell, game plan related info that comes out .. playing time decisions ... you know, anything that could potentially affect the product on the field ... affecting one team, or both.

So, as to weather, there was one that personally affected me, recently. And it was discussed on this board, as well. VT @ BC 2 weeks ago. I was planning to travel with family that weekend, so I was closely monitoring the weather situation for those reasons (would we be able to go at all? would we need to change our flight time or even airport? would we have to change our plans with the dog? would we lose power?) ... but it would obviously have affected the game. Early in the week, there was great uncertainty as to just how bad the Nor'easter would be in various parts of New England. Different tracks were possible ... some made it a rainy, windy situation in interior NE, but manageable .. others made it a pretty big friggin mess ... the timing of the rain and wind was also up in the air.

So, where I would have hypothetically taken VT and given the points (in MA, you can't bet on college games involving MA schools), pretty easily in decent weather, I knew if it was "worst case" or near that, weather-wise, it would be a much lower scoring slog, and there's no way you'd give the points. It looks like at least one boardie took VT early on ... and that was an obvious bad move at the time, due to the uncertainty. And the uncertainty proved to play out to work against that bet. The "funny" part was, as I was travelling out of state, and we were actually able to make our flight on Friday, I was able to make a bet and bet AGAINST VT (taking BC and the points) on Saturday morning, and made some easy money, on a bet that would have flipped the other way (I wouldn't have just avoided the game - I would have actively supported VT minus the points) in better weather.

Ok, I have to say, that is an impressive narrative. Every so often, someone comes along that bucks conventional wisdom and changes the paradigm. I think that someone may be you sir. It has me rethinking my entire betting approach. I believe I speak on behalf of the entire board when I urge you to post some of your picks on Saturdays so we can tail and take advantage of some free money.

I get your obvious sarcasm, but we've been down this road before ... with the NCAA tourney ... where you guys mocked me relentlessly, and I kept posting winners and the most you could muster is "uh, you're just on a hot streak or something."

Then, this year, for college football, a guy in this thread mentioned the UC Davis v. SMU game, and thought -26 was low ... you came in and said it should probably be 24 or 25, and cautioned that he should be careful because it was a "sandwich game" ... I stated the line was good up to at least 40, and gave my reasoning ... and it ended up being a 46 point thumping. And then, again, in the one thread about the PSU v. NW game (actually, it was someone's thoughts on the prior game, but NW was discussed), where I pointed out that we were laughable 2.5 faves, while we should be 17 points dogs, conservatively ... and we got lucky to only lose by 21. I haven't posted any "losers" ... and even though 2 isn't much of a sample ... it's pretty weird that I just came out with 2 lines that REALLY disagreed with the oddsmakers/common bettors and was eerily accurate, no? Just lucky, I guess. Again. And mocked, again.

I run a hedge fund shop ... I manage risk, assess situations and "bet" on outcomes all the time ... I'm used to outsmarting the market ... and folks who are smarter than oddsmakers and your average "sharp." And I knew sports well before I knew investment management and risk assessment.

And I have no problem with technical analysis, in asset management or gambling ... I employ a number of quants who focus exclusively on that ... it's just not the end all, be all, nor is it the only way to be successful. I'm trying to help, and you mock ... that's your choice. Have a good one.

I was supposed to go to the App St. game this Saturday. While it's not directly in the path according to that graphic, the forecast is for heavy rain and wind. I am not going to the game (the last App game I tried to attend earlier this year was delayed 4 or 5 hours) and I am looking at the under, which hasn't moved yet.

Sorry to hear. Looks like rain staring pretty close to game time in Boone and increasing through the afternoon. Wind doesn't look too bad. 11mph. I'm seeing a line drop from 50.5 to 49.5 in the last 12 hrs. If you're betting it, don't wait.

Hard Rock just can't get any worse. I don't think.

I bet $2.50 to win $80 on my friend Ryan Armour to win the Senior Tour event the other day - b/c I really think he's going to win soon. I sort of forgot about it, and after Ryan shot 63 today and leads the tournament, I figured I'd check where the live odds are.

The whole tournament is gone from their website now for some reason. My bet is still there, but that's it.

Why? If I were them, I'd have AI cock fighting on my site if it was allowed. I'd certainly have Senior golf if someone wanted to bet on it.

Having senior golf is one thing...but not surprising that they aren't offering Live Odds on it. I'd guess they relist it each night after everyone is finished.

I guess I'm saying if they're going to put it out there, treat it like other golf tournaments. I've seen odds locked in golf plenty of times. Never seen a tournament in progress just removed though.

It's not the Hard Rock. I looked at bookmaker, betonline, and bovada and none have live betting on this event. I'm guessing there aren't many (if any) books that have it. I don't think they removed it. They probably posted pre-flop odds and then took it offline once the event started. They just don't have the capacity to put it up as a live betting event. Like Erial said, they could very well post updated odds tonight.

Haha, yes. I thought of that when I saw that betonline has live Polish basketball on right now.
I'm not sure why they are able to post live betting on some events and not others. I'm sure it has to with being able to efficiently monitor the event in real time. They don't want to post bad odds because they can't keep up or someone like Erial will find it and crush them.

I assume they farm it out.

When I was betting 1 and 2 dollars on live ping pong - just to see how unfair it actually was, I was astonished at what happened live.

The way odds changed from point to point and second to second was incredible. I would pick a favorite around -160 and hope he'd lose the first 2 or so points of the first game, then bet him at -120.

I saw it all though. Funny stuff. One time I had a $2 parlay on these two heavy favorites. One guy cruises. Second guy is up 2 games and 10-2 in the 3rd. Guy loses 10 straight points and the next 2 games.

BTW - I like Columbia @ Marist tonight -3.5. The money line shot up today and the spread didn't climb as much. Even at -120 I like it.

Columbia scored 40 on Lafayette. Marist scored 9 on Lafayette.

Yea, when he bragged about how easy NCAA tournament lines are to beat (fact...they aren't) and that he's been banned from all of his NCAA pools because he always wins them.

Another fact...if you think a Big Ten football line is off by 20 points, then you need to reevaluate things because that's never going to happen.

Moderating a gambling forum for a decade, we'd come across this once or twice a year. It was even more fun when it was someone with the fail-proof Roulette or Blackjack (that didn't involve counting cards) system that was convinced that since they'd had a good streak, they had it all figured out.

So much of it comes down to others doing the work and the US facing books just copying the lines from a feed. There isn't much of a market for live betting on PGA Champions Tour events, isn't shot-by-shot data available, and it isn't worth the work for anyone to keep updated live odds on them, so we don't have them. There must be enough people in the world that do play live ping pong, Polish basketball, etc, that it is worth it on those events (and/or the work involved in setting up live odds to calculate ping pong on the fly isn't a barrier to offering them).

Bravo for going FCS. Best of luck.
I had a friend who became a bookie years ago that told me "It's better to be betting the Ivy League early then Hawaii late."

Which I took to mean, when you're flush you can sprinkle Ivy League. When you're chasing, and down you're looking at the Hawaii game.

I bet on 2 FCS games tomorrow. I am taking the points with Cornell and giving the points with Lamar. We'll see how it goes.
One upping Mt Nitt. I'm rooting for you!

I just made a small bet on 1H under in the App game. Looks like the rain forecast got a little worse and a touch more wind. Definitely not a fun game to watch in person.

Grant - my VPN (which I have to have turned off for Hard Rock) is always IP'd in Newark. Can I explore another book, or does the credit card billing trump all else?
