I disagree somewhat regarding needing the run to be successful. I think they will either try to stop the run with just the d-line and put everyone else in coverage, so our running game will need to be successful to force the LBs to stay near the line. OR, they will believe their CB and S are more athletic than our WR and put everyone at the line to give KT no time. If he can scramble and still make quick throws they are in a difficult spot. Their D has gotten confused on the field several times in their early games. I can see the speed play offense giving them trouble when that is happening.

I do agree that the game is probably more about whether our D can slow them down or force field goals and not TDs. I'm not very optimistic. Hopefully, we can force their QB to make mistakes from inexperience.
I think we need the run to be successful, but I don't think running the ball well means we win.
Let me rephrase. I didn’t mean to majority run. I just meant if they are shutting down the run, I doubt we can successfully set up the pass.
I think that's probably correct. I just meant that it's not enough. Obviously nothing by itself is really enough, but whereas some games running the ball successfully will be a pretty good predictor of who wins, I don't think that's going to be the case in this game. I expect us to put up some points and be successful on offense. I don't expect us to win because I expect us to put up points on us also.

I have no doubt our offense can put up points. I think it comes down to how many stops we get on D. Could also potentially pull it off if we force them in to field goals on enough drives.

Im actually pretty interested to see if we can continue to be prolific offensively against a top program. Putting up points has very rarely happened in quantity vs Bama through the years.

Fair point, but one thing you have to say about Lebby is even when we were losing with Shapen, most games he was putting up points. The other teams were just putting up more and sometimes a bunch more.

Bama's defense isn't exactly stellar. Mizzou has a better defense than Bama does.

1. No turnovers
2. Fluff goes for another 100+ yards
3. Defense forces 3 three and outs while giving up two or fewer explosive plays

0 offensive turnovers, 2 defensive turnovers, minimal penalties, no key injuries, & the offense scoring 35 or more points.

Force a combination of 9 Alabama offensive possessions that end in punts, TOs, or field goal attempts.

True, Mullen couldn't score at all against them.

Protect KT and he'll make some plays. Our receivers will get open. It's really up to the OL for our offense. DL is serviceable and more reliable, just need some QB pressure. We'll have a really good chance if the offense can put up 30 points or more. 20 won't get it done.

The better question is how many points do we need to be up entering the fourth quarter to eliminate the refs bias and effect on the game?

If our safeties play great and eliminate wide open receivers, which SC did not, and if our tackles can hold up for 4 seconds in pass pro

Reading some of these threads you might think refs are half of our problem. They’re not.

Yes, we’ve gotten quite a few raw calls through the years, but the scores of the vast majority of our losses makes it pretty clear who the better team is almost every time.

Hopefully we show this team is getting close and Kamario and a few other playmakers are the difference.

IMO, we have to be able to run the ball with and without Kamario. K1 needs to have 50 yards rushing, and Fluff needs 100. If we can't establish a legit run game, we won't win the game.

If they are able to put 5-6 in the box and keep our run game at bay, they will beat us by 3 tds.

Co-Pilot says:

Alabama 31, Mississippi State 30

The statistic that gives me the most pause about picking Alabama comfortably is not Mississippi State's offense. It's that Alabama has not yet shown it can consistently stop a good running game, and Mississippi State may have the best rushing offense Alabama has faced so far.

The final scores make Alabama's defense look better than some of the underlying yardage numbers suggest. The question Saturday is whether Alabama continues winning the turnover battle. If turnovers are even, I think this game is much closer than the Alabama -6 spread implies.

The matchup problem for Alabama

If Alabama cannot pressure Taylor with four defenders, it has two unattractive choices:
  1. Rush four and give Taylor time
    • Taylor can wait for intermediate and deep routes to develop.
    • Alabama’s secondary must cover longer.
    • Taylor can scramble when coverage pulls defenders away from the line.
  2. Blitz to create pressure
    • Alabama removes defenders from coverage.
    • MSU can answer with screens, quick passes, quarterback runs and Bothwell out of the backfield.
    • One missed tackle can become an explosive play.
That is precisely the type of defensive conflict MSU’s offense is built to create.
