Look i get it, I'm not much on the whole presbyterian (and related spinoff) "double predestination" thingy either.
But this question of 'why does god let bad things happen to good people (and vice versa for that matter) is an old one which neither the pro-god nor the anti-god side really has much of an answer for. The best I can give you is that he does allow us to live in a condition of freedom, where good things and bad things can happen. Usually the limits on the bad things (like here) are ordinary rather than miraculous. but if it gets us thinking about things, perhaps that's not horrible.
The anti-god (as you put it) group has a fairly sound answer to the question of why God lets bad things happen to good people.
The answer being: There is no God to prevent bad things from happening to good people.
The pro-god (as you put it) should then respond with: It matters less what happens to people in this life because it is the next life that is everlasting.
