Can recall games as far back as the very early part of the 1960ās. Lots of teams used a T backfield, then sometime later an āIā formation. They would try to punch a hole in the other teamsā line and run through it, but it was still exciting.
Around 1977 Coach Harris at Lincolnton begin using a veer type of an offense which I believe he picked up from Wake Forest. He used both a split backfield, where the halfbacks were behind the guards, and the āIā; Then, I thought that was taking a big chance, but by todayās standards it would look pretty conservative.
Seems like passing began to increase in the late 60ās or early 70āsā¦The first run-and-shoot type of an offense I saw was used by Cummings High out of Burlington in the 1988 state championship game against Shelby.
