He got fired. What I mean is that the BOT wanted him to retire. He didn’t want to retire so he was forced out. They came up with that sweet deal paid by UK for Mitch to walk away. After the public along with the governor got involved, that deal was rescinded by UK. In the end he got paid anyway. Not by UK, but by Joe Craft and his conglomerate of boosters.
Mitch did a lot of good, but he lost a lost of respect in his last few years.

He absolutely got fired. The pr spin was this retirement. No one gets paid for retirement like this. That's why the academic no show position had to be paid for by Athletics.

The irony was just yesterday morning I corrected people that claimed he now wasn't going to get paid. Just a few hours later, it came out.

He was always getting paid. For or reasons they shifted it to "private" funds, which is just champions blue llc. Of course that is now the athletics department.

The whole thing stinks and is full of self dealing from many angles. Its a disaster and everyone involved in letting this happen should be fired.

Who cares?

Not coming from state coffers or NIL/athletic funds.

Dude put in 24 years. Made the athletic department a lot of money.

There’s Deans and other bureaucratic bloat positions who don’t do **** that will retire and make off with that much.

I don’t think someone caring about this makes them wrong or in anyway implies anything negative about them, personally

I didn’t say it did.

We paid a kid 800,000 for 3 games and to throw money around on social media…

The AD who put in work for 24 years can’t get a little retirement package?!

The article even says that position is still going to be filled which means that money is still going to get spent on someone!

It was essentially a consulting position which the Uni and athletic dept both spend for regardless.

“A little retirement package”. 🤣

The dude was paid handsomely for 24 years. Just freaking retire.

We just hired a dude from a major university and from a major conference. If we need MB to hold his hand then we hired the wrong guy.

There’s absolutely no need for this position. What is wrong with some of you?

It’s a retirement package that some can very reasonably argue is more than most receive

There is no need for a lot of positions.

The article even says that it’s still going to be filled.

So all that bellyaching from the Gov and fans has lead to two checks getting cut. One to MB and one to whoever fills the roll.

I’m not arguing it was a good idea or necessary. I’m merely saying the reaction was as if big institutions, public or private, have never done such a thing.

It’s actually very common.

For the Gov to howl is ridiculous considering all the wasteful spending the state house does.

Fans act like they’ve never seen someone retire/get fired and not hang around and get paid in some made up special position.

It’s a retirement package that some can very reasonably argue is more than most receive

Most don’t work in major D1 collegiate athletics and haul in what that hauls in.

Love it or hate it that JMI deal was worth half a billion! Pretty big haul.

There are 45-50ish P4 ADs. Maybe about half of em oversee sustainable mega money making machines. MB was one of those.

I would bet most with any kind of tenure and resume similar to MB will get a nice retirement. Some will probably even hang around the program in some capacity.

It’s the same nonsense the C-suite class and the wannabe’s spout.

“We could never attract a great leadership unless we offer them so much and then pay them even more when they perform poorly”

As Carlin said, it’s a big club and you ain’t in it.

Anyone thinking an employee who works for an PUBLIC UNIVERSITY should be getting this kind of golden parachute is just looking for a pair of boots to lick.

The dollars used to pay Mitch are absolutely coming out of the NIL coffers. The money did not just materialize from no where.

Mitch probably has dirt on Eli. That’s the only way this makes sense.

What a corrupt school. I’m an alum and I’m ashamed. They’ll never receive a single dime from me and I’ll do everything in my power to steer my children to other schools should they choose to continue their education after high school.

Justification: Others have done it and the gov waste money. Okey doke.

As far as getting a “nice retirement”. He’s made millions over the years. Why are we calling a made up no value position a nice retirement?

very fair point, and I would probably agree with you. I find this post of yours much better than “who cares?”

The athletic department at UK is not a public entity. Has not been for years. Acting like coaching contracts and AD contracts should be scaled to a public university is simply based upon very old outdated information.

completely disagree he did a lot of good, Mitch was a trainwreck. He’s corrupt, but he plays the church boy routine which is why he has a segment that thinks he did well. He didnt. He was horrible for main sports, he sucked the life out of competing at high levels, he stood in the way of must have hires like Calipari, the only good hires he made worth anything, the hire was made around him.

Mitch is a crony. He makes himself wealthy, he does a lot around campus that landlords want, and he does not advocate for students or athletics that matter. He wants the illusion that we don’t win big because “we’re clean”. The truth is he didn’t want it because he wants no attention on UK so these corrupt deals can be made and no one looks. This is typical of guys like him.

He’s also a total narcissist as you can see by his inability to let people move on and he holds the seat hostage. It’s about him, not these programs. He throws out words like knuckleheads, so he’s a good man. No he’s not.

Mitch has held back UK athletics since he was hired but he’s as corrupt as Jurich. That’s not a guy who’s done well. And the basketball brass certainly know he didn’t do well. He tried to cover this up by winning in sports no one cares about to pad his stats. See how successful I am? Meanwhile sports that matter suffer so no attention is brought to them and he can be as corrupt as he wants.

The guy is the worst person ever associated with UK.

I am fairly well positive he would still be the AD if that is truly what he wanted.
Mitch made clear he wanted 2 more years to anyone they would listen. When he realized the president was no longer in charge of making that call, he sulked. Go watch the stein presser. That’s when all of that came to be.

Mitch would not leave until 2028 if he had his way. That is a fact.

Everything about the stein hire proved mitch was shut out and done. We finally hired someone before firing the guy we had. Mitch always fired the person THEN started a "nation wide search" for the replacement, inexplicably wasting loads of time.

Then the sulking, my god the sulking. He was so mad he snapped at every question he was asked.

So long.

Per KSR, the deal was signed on MB’s last day of employment, go figure. The weasel got to sneak out the door without having to answer any more questions.

This is not a fact. You just believe it to be a fact because that is what you desperately wanted to occur.

If he was fired. Why wasn’t his contract just bought out? He had like 2 years left. That would have been way less money than he’s getting paid now.

To the people saying he made UK a lot of money. That’s why he got paid handsomely for 20+ years here.

I had a lot of respect for Mitch for a long time, but the way it ended for him has damaged him in my eyes a bit. I also know we don’t know everything behind the scenes to explain decisions like this. Personally, as an alum and parent of current student, I think Capiluto should be sent packing and the BOT needs an overhaul.

With that said… anyone who thinks Barney and Jurich are in the same slimeball rankings… think again. I have lived in Louisville most of my
life outside my years at Uk. Tom Jurich along with James Ramsey were possibly the worst crime syndicate the state has ever seen. Both embezzled millions from that university and were never held accountable other than being let go. Jurich never answered for the “missing” $19 million. Also, when someone crossed him, he sought to destroy their life… getting people fired was his specialty. Tom Jurich WAS not a good man on ANY level.

Yes,
Mitch whined and certainly had his not so good moments, but he never set out to destroy lives the way Jurich did.

Fellas, there simply is no comparison.

Mitch is Mother Teresa compared to Tom!
