Ok, I think I’ve got it now. The play really wasn’t a foul and wasn’t called by the referee. The video dude cannot stop play and bring something he deems a foul to the attention of the referee and the referee can’t make the call post review. My only question is was it a loss of down and is the penalty assessed from the point of the foul or the original line of scrimmage?

It's like people are just now finding out that FIFA is a pretty corrupt organization that bends and breaks their own rules to suit what they want. They want soccer to continue to grow in America, so they don't want one of the USA's best players to be out in probably the biggest men's soccer match in the history of the country, especially since it was a dodgy red card that made him suspended. So they used this very intentionally vague rule to make him eligible. It's the same rule they used to make Cristiano Ronaldo eligible when he should've been suspended the first two games of the tournament. It's also the reason they rigged a way to give Saudi Arabia the 2034 World Cup with hardly any bidding process, because Infantino covets that oil money. FIFA does what it wants, and that just happened to benefit the USA this time.

LOL! They don’t want to have to explain it do they. This really is can of worms for them.
Actually, this is unquestionably the correct ruling on their appeal. They're not a party to it.

At the end of the day, even though FIFA screwed this up in virtually every way possible (no call on field when it probably should have at least been a foul if not a yellow, improper use of slow motion in the VAR review - should only be used to determine position i.e. offside or out of bounds, fishy conversion of the suspension to a 1-year probation), I think justice was probably done in the end. To me, it was serious enough for a red card, but not serious enough for a 1-game suspension.

Letter of the law, sure. But this is only going to increase the uproar. UEFA has condemned the suspended suspension, and the appearance of political interference. What a mess all the way around.

edited to add: There is no mechanism at the World Cup for a red not to result in a suspension. Hence the dubious probation thing. That needs to be changed before the next one. As far as I know no league anywhere has that rule.

I can't get over how mad a certain group of Americans are that an American player has been ruled eligible to play soccer tonight.

If politics have overtaken your life to the point where you are not happy about this, it might be time to take a step back.
I haven't kept up with the commentary on this, but I'm sure people are upset Trump got involved.

I think the whole fiasco reeks of corruption whether there was political pressure or not. Im not upset he was been ruled eligible, I just dont like that it tarnishes any further US victories. I was looking forward to beating Belgium without him.

I doubt the US wins it all, but if it did this could become a legendary incident like Maradona's "hand of God" goal (although that one was probably just a bad call and not corruption)

I’m kinda surprised they’re being such whiny beaches about this.

The suspension would’ve been a nice little advantage for them, but it got reviewed and fixed. Move the 17 on and play the game. They’re acting like something egregious happened to them.
Given Belgium’s laborious whinging over this they really should never consider fielding an SEC football team.

We can debate the USA red card all day. Even top referees disagree on that one. The one on Quanseh is as clear cut as it gets. His foot went over the ball because he came in high. If that's not a red card virtually nothing is.
By the rule - it is. My point is - change the rule.

But there is. Rule 27. FIFA has authority to suspend part or all of a player's suspension. This is at least the 3rd time they've used it for this World Cup. Nobody cried too hard when Renaldo wasn't suspended for the first 2 group stage games.

I was talking about throwing the suspension out entirely when they judge that it's warranted. That's what happens when they do this in nearly every league I know of.

Belgium has laid its cards on the table. If he is on the team sheet they will play the game but contest his eligibility to play. If we win, they will file suite in the International Court for Sports Arbitration. They will seek an expedited ruling before the quarterfinals.

Oh no? Someone might question if FIFA is on the up and up? What will ever happen to their sterling reputation?

I take it back. I’m going to tell you why you’re an idiot here and there, but my quick review says you’ve already posted 40 times in this thread alone.

I’ve got no intention of matching that level of crazy.
Pretty sure you matched it about 10 posts ago. You have the highest "level of crazy" of anyone on this board, and you do it over and over and over and over. You pick a post and then go on and on and on and on about how they should stop posting. Oh, the irony.

A lot of Euros are whining on twitter. Who knew fans of a sport with all that diving and players faking injury would whine so much.

And you show up every two weeks or so, make a stupid post or two, get mad, and disappear for awhile.

If you actually hung around and learned the personalities here it might make some sense who I get into it with. It’s a pretty small subset of the people here.
