On a serious note:

Seems like Mexico won the hour-long weather delay mental battle going into that first half. They just did not look like the same team for the first 30 minutes out there that they had in the play matches.

No NHL had gone to 3x3 skaters but not sure if they still do it

I’d certainly allow subs for each OT and shorten to 10 min each

We have to do anything other than end with PKs
NHL has never done that in the playoffs and I don't think they ever will. Sudden death OT playoff games are one of the most special parts of hockey. I hate PK's too, but maybe there's a middle ground. Decide elimination games by PKs in the round of 32, but then maybe let them play an hour of OT in the round of 16 and the quarters followed by PKs and then 90 minutes in the semis followed by PKs and finally no PKs at all in the final match (with extra subs allowed the longer the games are).

This is an even worse idea...lol.

If you're willing to let them play indefinitely, I think you have to allow unlimited substitution at each interval, including return of players previously subbed out.

I'm fine with that. Playing short handed or PK IMO is just not true to the game. Like deciding a World Series on a HR hitting derby.

As a long-time Germany fan (I'm half German and they were the first World Cup team I rooted for since the US didn't generally qualify back in the day), this and recent WC teams are not vintage German teams. Germany should be able to get by Paraguay, but I'm not entirely surprised by yesterday's result and I wouldn't put this team in the European power category.

I think Paraguay learned a lot from the US game about how they needed to play going forward. They were incredibly organized and disciplined defensively which frustrated Germany to no end. Germany definitely needs that next infusion of young talent with the "it" factor, or at least the killer instinct when it comes to finishing which the best German teams always had in the past. At least my full, undivided attention can now be focused on the U.S.
I'm not sure Paraguay learned that from the US match, its exactly how they played during qualifying. The US just made them uncomfortable and pulled them out of shape.

Continued enforcement of this rule will eliminate some of the pre-corner kick nonsense. But they also need to weed out the WWE garbage pre corner kick in the rest of the box.

We've already seen less Oscar worthy diving due to the mistaken ID rule where VAR can intervene. Huge positive for the game. Continued enforcement on these things will bring the skill back into the game where it means something.
Klopp w the best line on if that was a foul Arsenal would lose 60% of their goal, or something like that

The existing penalty kick shootout arrangement makes sense. Teams are given an extra 30 minutes to win. If neither team can win after two hours, then too bad. Use a shootout to determine a winner quickly and move on.

Fair point - nhl only did in regular season and scoring a hockey goal is easier than in soccer - just look at scoring averages

if people like PKs the great. I don’t as so much luck is involved based on GK jumping right or left.

I’d rather see another solution and open to ideas

He can whine all he wants but FIFA made it a point of emphasis for the referees & VAR. It was explained to all the teams as well pre-tournament. So just sour grapes on his part.

Let’s face it, FIFA, which it’s easy to hate on them, has done a good job with eliminating much of the time wasting that hurt the game and trying to eliminate stuff like this and it’s made the games much better to watch IMO.

Yeah, I agree, they have done a good job. I only saw the printed text so didn't get so much get that he was whining as much as pointing out Premier League watchers have been seeing bodying the goalie allowed for a couple years now. My Spurs goalie, Vicario, struggled mightly with it a couple years ago trying to get used to the physicality on corners.

Kane made something out of nothing. Soft cross behind him, circled around and just got enough on his header to score the tying goal.

Incredible Belgium
Comeback to tie and awful Senegal choking!

I’d rather USA fade Senegal if we beat Bosnia as we typically struggle with good Euro teams even if Belgium hasn’t looked great

Unbelievable comebacks by England against Congo and Belgium against Senegal, today, just crazy. That's why the WC is so amazing and entertaining. Next up, the USMNT against B-H. We're the favorites, but Congo and Senegal showed what good, disciplined teams can do against favorites (and Senegal, especially, should've won). Hope we come out with high energy and can get an early goal.

Saw an interesting video with a different PK idea.

Have PKs immediately after full time.
Winner of PK gets a 0.5 goal advantage going into standard 30min extra time.

Example:
Belgium and Congo full time is tied 2-2
Belgium wins PKs
Extra time starts: Belgium winning 2.5 to 2.

Forces Congo to play aggressive.
If Belgium wants to park the bus - they need to do it for 30min against an attacking offense.
Game cant end in a tie because one team will always be up by 0.5 goal after any score.

Makes PKs a factor in the outcome but still gives the teams themselves the final opportunity.

This is better than what they do now for sure

USA by far the better team but we need more than 1 SOG

would like to see them use the left side more and get Pulisic more involved as it seems most is going down the right

Agreed, as he has been dangerous the few times he had the ball, but BH is spending more defense on preventing Pulisic from getting the ball, so it might be tough unless he comes inside more.

I'm sure many purists will hate it, but I kind of like it.

This. And need our Goalie to stop kicking out of bounds on the long kicks.

Yellow not red - he wasn't even looking at the player with his back to him as they collided. Bad call, IMO. Going to be a tough game now.
