I know a guy from Ukraine that had to flee. He was a Putin supporter but I think he changed his opinion due to the war and his displacement. We have a neighbor who is originally from Russia and still seems to support Putin. She doesn't like to discuss politics so we don't know what drives her thinking.
They have seen enough big shots fall out of windows to know speaking up against Putin will get them whacked.
With regard to crimea, it seems to me that it doesn’t really matter what Putin wants or threatens. If it’s under siege and out of supplies, they can’t defend it.

What choice do they have? They can’t supply the front lines. They can’t supply Crimea. They can’t provide fuel to people in Moscow.
I think russians are on the clock to get out before it is destroyed. Leaving it intact, to me, only invites further aggression from Russia. That doesn’t mean they need to blow the whole thing up. They just need to make sure it can’t be used and repaired until Ukraine is in the free and clear.
I'm getting off topic here and apologize, but remember back in the 80's it was thought that a Soviet/Warsaw Pact conventional invasion of the west might be unstoppable just because of the huge numerical edge the Warsaw Pact would have had in men/tanks/materiel? That tactical nukes might be the only possible response?
I would assume that what would have actually happened is that US/NATO air power and the superiority of US/NATO tanks/artillery/technology would have stopped any invasion almost immediately in its tracks. Also that the Warsaw Pact countries would have been completely worthless as allies for the Soviets or may have actually actively attempted to sabotage a Soviet invasion.
Circa 2022 I would bet the Russian Army would have had a difficult time just with the individual militaries of Nato countries (say Poland), let alone the whole of NATO.
I don't think Putin will concede defeat in order to provide fuel to people in Moscow. He hasn't been deterred by 1.2 million deaths.

Way more than fuel issues to Moscow bro. Their entire military has been about snuffed out and they have no air defense to the industrial complex being taken out one factory at a time. Plus pretty clear smoke Putin is in the brink of being deposed.
If Putin is deposed he might be replaced by somebody who is ready to negotiate a peace agreement. It would probably be based on the Istanbul agreement of 2022 where there would be a cease fire, Russia would keep Crimea, and they would negotiate the eastern regions of Ukraine. I would be stunned if the agreement would be to relinquish all areas currently controlled by Russia.
Russia would keep Crimea? How would they provide logistics? They are toasted there.
The longer this war goes on, the weaker Russia's position becomes. They are not now negotiating from a position of strength and it diminishes more every day. Russia is in no position to make demands.
