Johnson to MSU. Something very strange is going on this cycle. We are missing out on everyone to inferior schools. What is going on?

Good thing the 2026 was great because this class appears to be very underwhelming as of now.

The portal is largely replacing HS recruiting. Unless a guy is an absolute stud (which Iowa rarely gets) or has local connections, it is probably better to get guys out of the portal.

True, portal has replaced most of traditional recruting. Recruiting out of high school is still a crap shoot for the most part

That’s why now missing out on guys isn’t as bad as it used to be. Like QB who went to Kentucky. Half these qb switch schools within 2 years especially if not playing by soph year. Last year Iowa didn’t get a rb in our recruiting class and we ended up with FCS leading rusher from South Dakota LJ Philips out of portal.

A school like Iowa will always need to have strong HS recruiting. Relying on the portal to bail out poor recruiting isn’t a recipe for success.

I’ve been happy with the most recent year’s HS classes though, so I’ll reserve judgment on this until it’s done.

MSU is an inferior school?
Their money is as green as OSU or mich or Iowa.

I highly doubt most recruits care about academics or even program legacy these days.
NW might be the single exception in the BIG where the value of the diploma can compete with the value of the nil.
Inferior? No...wealthier? Yes

This has long been a problem. It’s where Wisconsin was beating Iowa at their own game for over a decade. They kept land on their highly sought after RBs and we kept missing or the ones we did land ended up in trouble (Coker, Wegher).
Wisky did have that great run and it all started in 10’. Fake punt trajectory of ours and their programs and flipped where they started to take the edge but one of the few recruits we had decommit and I think what if. When Melvin Gordon decommitted. I wonder with Iowa have our issues with rb injuries and he was a record setting rb. Losing most recruits isn’t a huge deal but having a guy committed then decommit and become a star those sting.

however could be worse. Little fun fact. Rutgers had both saquon Barkley and braelon Allen decommit.

Agree DuddyB. Throughout Kirk's tenure Iowa has been a developmental program, though others falsely claim to be so.

Most young Hawkeye recruits can expect to learn for a couple of years, maybe more, before getting serious playing time. There will always be a few portal additions but Kirk won't start to change his focus to the portal. It's just not who he is and not what his program is about.

I’m sorry but Iowa football recruiting is so stale
Based off what? Losing out on a handful of recruits?

Meh. Even blue bloods go through this. I see de-commits all the time in recruiting cycles along with kids once favored to commit to a particular blue blood do a 180 at the 11th hour.

It’s happening everywhere.

Iowa would be best served continuing the approach they have had with high school recruiting and focus on the transfer portal in the offseason to fill positions of need from players far more proven than high school recruits. While it’s cool to get a commit from a 4 or 5 star prospect, it really doesn’t mean much until they have actually made it onto the field. And if such a player does actually become a standout, how many times out of 10 will you see that kid in the transfer portal seeking a bigger payout?

Iowa is never going to out-recruit Michigan, Texas, Ohio State, Georgia, and every other blue blood in college football. Never have. Never will. But thanks to the portal they are now able to land a few guys every cycle who come in right away and contribute. That never happened before. At the end of the day, football is still played with 11 guys a side regardless of high school rankings or portal statuses—something Nebraska fans have yet to figure out. That is no different than it was 5 years ago. And it will be no different 5 years from now in terms of the logistics of roster construction.

True, and these are verbal commitments. No school can say absolutely that these prospects will be on the 2027 team because nothing gets signed until December- maybe later.
One of many reasons why high school recruiting has become less important than filling positions of need via the portal.

Poaching commits has been going on since at least the 1950s, decades before paying players was allowed in the rules. It's nothing new at all.

I believe a program should be built on high school recruits. Take a few portal kids as needed, maybe add a juco transfer now and then.

I know, I am old. Get off my lawn you delinquents with your mischief.

The offensive linemen we've been grabbing out of the portal have had a 100% BUST rate? Am I missing an OL that has portaled to us and significantly contributed?

H.S. recruiting remains incredibly important.

They got 5 OL commits last year-3 of them 4 *
They have two tackle commits in this class.
The staff seems to be doing well on the OL front

The goal, obviously, is to do well in EVERY recruiting cycle. Especially if you're Iowa.

I guarantee you the staff isn't out on the recruiting trail with the mindset it isn't a big deal if their efforts are for nothing.
