It was amazing. We did Rome, Florence, and the Amalfi Coast. We stayed near Maori but spent a day in Positano. I would rank order our experiences as follows:
- Colosseum
- Vatican Museum
- Pompeii
- David and the museum
- Cooking classes in a villa on the outskirts of Florence
- Piazza della Signoria
- Positano
- St. Peter's Basillica
- Capri
- And I know this seems crazy to some putting it last, but the Sistine Chapel. Didn't really do anything for me.
Yeah there is something strange about the light and scale of the Sistine, so I get it. I’d take the st Chappell in Paris any day and twice on Sunday. The coliseum is sort of shocking at how similar it is to modern stadia.
along the coast, did you pick up any colatura d’alici? I was just telling our local purveyor about the product last week to see if he could stock a couple bottles.
the best thing about Italy is how the architecture reflects the political history of the place.
-Rome, imperial in scale and grandeur
-Montalcino area, you see the physical manifestation of a city state
-Venice, square, egalitarian buildings of a commercial republic
-amalfi, constant defense against pirates, and I loved how each and every town had its own unique Marian story
