I was in Grand Valley this morning. I didn’t hear anything this morning, hunting turkeys while it is snowing is not much fun.
I heard quit a few gobble off the roost but couldn't pull them to me. I used to never like turkey hunting in the snow then I lived in montana for about 5 years and whacked a few Merriam's in snowy weather. Only thing I know for sure is I can't get **** if I'm sitting at home.

We went to Dutch Treat for breakfast. Anymore I go to Frosty Jacks for lunch.
Dutch Treat is usually pretty good. Or at least since the new owner took over anyway. I used to do hay for a farm up on Mickle Hill in Garland and we’d all stop at Frosty Jacks on the way home to grab ice cream and cool off after throwing bales all afternoon.

Probably henned up.

Do you call to them, then move towards and call again? They're expecting you to meet them, no?

Depends on a lot of things. I was on a piece of property bordering another and I can hunt both but the old farmer who owns the one the birds were on likes to go out opening day behind his farm and that's where they were. He doesn't go out much more than that so I'm good next time. Didn't want to bugger his morning up and early in the year I'm not overly aggressive. I'll usually try to call them off the roost, make a fly down cackle, beat some old wings on the ground and scratch around around a bit like I'm eating something tasty. But, if they go elsewhere initially I usually try to reposition where I think they're gonna head after splitting up from the hens. These PA birds are tricky compared to elsewhere. Nebraska,Montana and Tennessee was so much easier due lesser pressure I'd assume.

Last year I killed one on opening morning and had forgot to buy a 2nd tag so it sorta stunk not having a bird to chase after the first 20 minutes of the season ha

Also, in PA I'm definitely more skittish of moving to birds because of how many people are in the woods and I just don't trust people. I've called a good bit of hunters to me and it's always annoyed me.

Yep. Graduated from a class of 15 kids lol. My science teacher would take us down to the firehall to watch bears get checked in and aged in the fall. We used to stop and eat at the Landmark Hotel from time to time before it shut down. They had great burgers. Buccardo’s had great pizza balls back then too. I haven’t been in there to eat since HS though

I totally understand.

If you had your way and the woods to yourself, how close to the roost would you creep before pink light, and might you close some of the distance after your initial fly down cackle?

Do you locate them the evening before after they have flown up?

I don't get too close to the roost, I try to know where they're gonna fly down to based off prior knowledge, scouting and just good ole geography. When I sit and try to hunt birds I know are roosted I don't move at all until I've shot one or know they've moved on enough I'm not gonna spook them. I just let them do what they were gonna do and reposition for the next good chance, when the break away from the hens.

I try to locate them before but with 3 little kids and life I haven't had as much time lately. Plus, I stay in contact with the landowner and go off patterns I've seen before based off weather. I like just being in the woods as much as anything so I don't mind learning as I go through the season. More reasons to get out more

If I owned more land I'd be planting some chuffa and some winter wheat to help them out year round as well. Give them a reason to hang out.

I went to school with a Buccardo and I remember him making a red bench in shop class for the restaurant, but that was years ago so I doubt it’s still there. Nonetheless, it’s a cool little town. When American Pickers went to the Hotel Tidioute years back it was enormous news. Did you ever take your kids to the fishing tournament? It was always so cool to see the tank they set up with the fish people caught

I went with my Grandfather as a kid. I intend on taking mine someday in the future, they're all still younglings with the oldest 6 now.

A little hint, if you know where they roost watch where they land when coming down. Position near that spot the next morning.
Watch where they are when they go to roost(fly up). Position accordingly. Forget the calls, an old tom will know the sound seems off and he'll spot you.

Oh absolutely. I explained in another that they were roosted behind the landowners farm and he was out as well and is a nice old guy. I didn't Wana encroach, he only ever goes opening day. I'll be back during the week haha

Don't sell yourself short. I'm sure if you apply yourself you'll be able to get a deuce in the night.

Okay...I'll start. Anybody have any experience with induction cooktops?
Just installed a Kitchen Aid with a downdraft (replacing a standard electric.) What a difference. So glad I switched. Once you learn how well your cookware works with the induction it is a breeze.
