Weird game with many unusual plays. Never saw a punt beyond the line before (which was basically a turnover), and I don't recall seeing a FG on 2nd and 10 when you're down two scores with some time on the clock.

Vandy did have a very explosive passing offense but was glad to see the Iowa offense move the ball and continue to score while eating up clock in the second half.

The punt past the line wasn't a turnover, it was a 5 yard penalty.

Iowa got the ball because Vanderbilt failed to pick up the yardage for a 1st down, and it was 4th down.

Iowa’s defense played poorly in the second half. Thankfully the offense had probably their best game of the season.
Good thing they held them to season lows in points and yards in the first half, huh? They were playing against the most efficient offense in the country that averages 39 ppg while playing in the SEC and had the Heisman runner up playing QB.

They gave up 27 points.
That's 18 points better than the last 3 opponents that Vandy faced.

First win against a team that will finish the season ranked since 2019 against Minnesota. Easily the biggest win since 2021 vs PSU. Kirk’s teams used to pull off big wins like this on what felt like a yearly basis, I was starting to think he lost his touch.

Anyone can check my post history and see I’ve been pretty negative since the USC loss. My prediction before the game was that we would have the lead in the 4th but blow it with some conservative game calling on offense.

Instead we stayed aggressive, and trusted our offense to move the chains and close the game out instead of relying on the defense. Was beautiful to see, really happy to be wrong today.

Despite my overall negativity I actually have been pretty optimistic about the team next season, and getting over that ranked win hump makes me think they might have potential to do something great next year.

Didn't see this one coming.
Thought we would have no answer for Pavia.
Figured Phil's People would do work.
Where was 200+ passing all year?
In my opinion, Iowa’s passing game was competent+ when it absolutely needed to be. Rutgers when we fell behind early. Sharp and methodical against Indiana until Mark got hurt. Nails on the final drive against Oregon. And today when we had to keep our foot on the gas.

It was an abomination the first few games, and I attribute that to Mark having such limited time practicing before the season. I really hope we just ride with Heck next season, and finally have a QB that has been in the system for a while before being thrown into game action.

random rules question. if the punter crosses the los but then retreats back behind los can he launch a legal punt?

Technically speaking, it's the same as an illegal forward pass.

The key term here is the loss of down.

It was 4th down. The illegal punt was a 5 yard penalty and a loss of down, therefore, we get the ball on the spot.

Its so fun to go back and read all these ridiculous posts from the first part of the game. And yet many of the same posters comment on poor coaching and play calling, all the while they're clueless. ALWAYS know what should have been called AFTER the plays been run, and run and hide under their coffee table at the first mistake the team makes. Its almost more fun reviewing the game thread then the actual game. Well ALMOST.....

Smart. Conserve as much time as possible. Score the 3 you need anyway. Two stoppages available to you.
Not smart at all! At least try two pass plays and use up 10-15 seconds and then try the field goal if necessary. If Iowa would do that many would be losing their minds!!

Laugh all you guys want. Some of the same guys who would be bitching if we ran the ball three times and didn't score are the ones screaming when he calls a GREAT pass play and the player doesn't execute and the ball goes off his hands. Its pure nonsense. Conversely on that TD pass to RVZ he makes the play and its huge. If he doesn't get the foot down and we don't get a TD but settle for a field goal you'd be bitching that we didn't run the ball just like when we do run the ball, and don't score you whine about that, and you know thats a fact. Heres a fact. Lester called a great game. End of story. Maybe don't need to dissect the game in absolutes in the 1st quarter. Go back and read the first several pages. Our offense sucks. This is why we always lose. Did the offense suck? No. Did we lose, No. There are ebbs and flows to the momentum, just like the runs in college basketball. The whining is insufferable..
