Iowa finally playing the kind of defense that the recent 'elite' have been playing for years and still losing the foul call battles - even at home.

Worst part of these whistles are that the vast majority of them are of the phantom variety, or the arguably worse predictive whistles.

"Play tough & rough D, they're not going to call everything ..... unless your jersey has IOWA on the front of it."

Not saying the Hawks will win @ the Clones, but IF they can somehow keep it close in the 2nd half, making FTs when they're available could really help. Today's FTs sucked.

Was Paul Szelc involved? He’s a historic Hawk hater (Paul Szelc is an ignorant scoundrel and I disapprove of his very existence)

#44 a redshirt at drake last year, is somehow getting minutes in a B10 game a year later. Make it make sense.
I mean.. that game was over for a long time. There was no chance Maryland was coming back despite the refs trying to help Maryland back door cover.

He came in with 6 minutes left in garbage time up 21. Usually garbage time is a bigger lead or a little later.. but Maryland could barely score without fts so it was over when he came in.

At the game with a clear view of the bench.. Hausen one of the most engaged players on the bench.. starting cheers.. encouraging teammates when they sub out.. it was very noticeable.. teased Combs when he missed the wide open corner 3.

Ben said it was a CD-DNP.. but he did look like he was wearing a tighter compression sleeve on his calf. I know he has worn a full leg sleeve, but this looked different.

I don’t get the criticism of matteoni and jirak getting time. Like you said, we were well in control of the game and both those guys need the experience, Jirak especially given his size. I actually like what I see from him, he moves really well and has a nice looking shot. Matteoni looks pretty agile as well, don’t think he ever ends up a big contributor but maybe a solid bench player.

It wouldn’t surprise me if Hausen is a major contributor by the end of the season.

Agree, and I think right now Sage has stepped into that spot. Solid contributions on both ends. A couple of games ago it was Howard who was the surprise.

Will Matteoni be in rotation in BIG season?
Ben likes to go with eight tops.
Folgy,sage,Howard are given,imo.
Jirak when matchups demand.
Hausen, in theory.

Joey?...TBD.
I will say that Joey is more aggressive on offense than some of the bench, outside of sage.
But,not sure that aggression is warranted with his skill-set.
No problem playing these subs last nite..get them some confidence at home vs BIG weakling

I think you nailed it already. Don't see him in the rotation when we get into the B1G....

Not in the rotation but getting some playing time to get his feet wet when the opportunity allows. We have two freshman bigs and all of us who have watched college basketball for any length of time know that young big men generally take some time to develop. I trust Ben to play the situation smartly.

My point is the guy probably should not have been given a scholarship. Had to redshirt at Drake, just isn't worthy of a P5 scholarship. Youre telling me of the thousands of players in the portal, that is the best depth option?

Not sure of the timing of it all, but Ben was a little behind the 8 ball putting a roster together, having time to evaluate players, AND for portal entrants to evaluate his program in a top conference. I think he went with what he was comfortable with in year one.

Folks should relax a bit. It's going to take some time to rev this up. Watch Ben in the pressers. He's laughing, poking the reporters in fun, and relaxed. BUT, he explains what is good, what is not good, where they will improve, and where HE will improve as a coach. He's a proven winner. He'll build this team right.

Yes and I feel certain that he and the staff really liked Matteoni at Drake given that they almost pulled his redshirt. Ben will forge ahead with both the young bigs as our foundation inside while he continues to recruit bigs more ready to play. The inside game even in another season may look totally different than it does now.

Holy s h i t - were ANY of Alvaro's fouls actual fouls? No wonder he was so frustrated 🤬
I don't think if you put all five of them together you could come up with ONE legit foul. Man, was Alvaro screwed today, and Iowa in general. I mean can you imagine a team going into East Lansing and getting all these phantom foul calls? LOL

I've been watching Iowa B-ball for awhile, and Iowa gets hosed at home just like it does on the road. It's pretty incredible. And it's pretty disgusting.

I watched the same things with the Sacramento Kings. For quite awhile, they were hamstrung by the officials, not getting calls on offense and getting called for basically breathing on the opposing team's players. Pisses me off, but nothing anyone can do about it. The body language by the player(s) who get called is heart wrenching sometimes. They just drop their arms straight down and have that look of "What else can I do?".

Let me add another point about the play of our bigs yesterday. Watching them both in addition to Juric a former guard Matteoni looked like a very able and willing passer which Ben wants in his posts. The half court offense thrives on ball movement. You always have to get back to how Ben wants to play which supersedes how we may look at things.

Sure Buzz. Sure.

All those fouls whistled on Iowa and FTAs for MD were the only thing keeping his team anywhere close to being in that game.
I like Buzz. He's a character. And a great recruiter.
Glad we get them twice this and probably will not for several years in future when his roster is loaded up with top five recruiting classes
